Download or read book The Day of the Cattleman written by Ernest Staples Osgood and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1929-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Day of the Cattleman was first published in 1929. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The legend of the Wild West, as celebrated in thousands upon thousands of western stories and movies, radio and television programs, has a firm grip on the imaginations of both young and old, not only in America but in many other lands. But, popular though such versions are, they do not tell how the west was really won. Professor Osgood's account sets the record straight for those who want authentic history rather than melodramatic fiction. "The range cattleman," Professor Osgood writes, "has more solid achievements to his credit than the creation of a legend. He was the first to utilize the semi-arid plains. Using the most available natural resources, the native grasses, as a basis, he built up a great and lucrative enterprise, attracted eastern and foreign capital to aid him in the development of a new economic area, stimulated railroad building in order that the product of the ranges might get to an eastern market, and laid the economic foundation of more than one western commonwealth." Professor Osgood traces the rise and fall of the range cattle industry, particularly in Montana and Wyoming, from 1845 to the turn of the century. He gives a detailed account of the activities of the stock growers' associations and of the cattlemen's relations with the railroads and with the Federal government. The book has won critical acclaim both in this country and abroad. The Saturday Review has described it as an "honest, scientific, and thorough examination" of a "semi-epic phase of Western life, now almost completely dead." In England, the Times Literary Supplement called it "the only substantial record of this particular chapter in the history of the West."

Her father, a once wealthy but now almost bankrupt Texas oilman, has rented the old suite again to celebrate his daughter's engagement in the same place and manner that he had celebrated his own engagement thirty years earlier. Only this time, the engagement is the father's idea, not the bride's. Through the calculated wedding of his daughter to Matt Snooker, the son of his best friend and founder of the industry's leading pipe and rigging company, Mr. Drithers hopes to save his own ailing oil company and avoid disaster. However, he gets more disaster than he can handle when Bobby, Julie's true love, sets out to rescue his one-and-only. Drithers' problems seem small compared to Julie's wrath when she learns of the deception played upon her. Download or read book Cow Boys and Cattle Men written by Jacqueline M. Moore and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowboys are an American legend, but despite ubiquity in history and popular culture, misperceptions abound. Technically, a cowboy worked with cattle, as a ranch hand, while his boss, the cattleman, owned the ranch. Jacqueline M. Moore casts aside romantic and one-dimensional images of cowboys by analyzing the class, gender, and labor histories of ranching in Texas during the second half of the nineteenth century. As working-class men, cowboys showed their masculinity through their skills at work as well as public displays in town. But what cowboys thought was manly behavior did not always match those ideas of the business-minded cattlemen, who largely absorbed middle-class masculine ideals of restraint. Real men, by these standards, had self-mastery over their impulses and didn’t fight, drink, gamble or consort with "unsavory" women. Moore explores how, in contrast to the mythic image, from the late 1870s on, as the Texas frontier became more settled and the open range disappeared, the real cowboys faced increasing demands from the people around them to rein in the very traits that Americans considered the most masculine. Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies, Southern Methodist University.

As Patton tastes small samples of the forbidden fruit, she becomes even more reckless in her enthusiasm to get the three brothers into her bed. Patton's wild schemes go too far and the brothers have to make a decision that will seal all their fates. *** 5 Angels: "From beginning to end this book scorches. Ms. Penn does a brilliant job of weaving the lust and love these four have for each other into a tale that does more than titillate. Her ability to engage the emotions of each character and bring them out in the open keeps this from being just a book about kinky sex. Sure there's plenty of that, but it's the deep emotions and love flowing through that turn this into a story worth reading. It's a fine line for an author to walk when portraying any BDSM lifestyle but Ms. Penn does it well and at no stage did any of it come across in a negative way. She explored the trust involved in such a relationship with skill and I thoroughly enjoyed Patton's submission to her three masters. I also enjoyed the way Patton's very independent, stubborn nature wasn't compromised in any way by her submission in the bedroom. Her body was more than happy to hand over her pleasure but her mind and spirit were never broken. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment of Ms. Penn's Cattleman's Club series." -- Rachel C., Fallen Angel Reviews. *** 5 Bookmarks: "I absolutely LOVED Patton's Way: Cattleman's Club, Book 1! I would rank this as one of my favorite stories of the year. Remember the name Jenny Penn as I predict this author as a true rising star among authors. This story hooked me right from the beginning and never let go, I couldn't put the book down. The plot twists and turns and the friction and heat between the brothers and Patton explode like an inferno. Patton's Way: Cattleman's Club, Book 1 is outstanding and I can't wait for the next story in this series, Hailey's Game. This story will turn you on like no other." -- Daria Wright, Wild on Books *** 5 Blue Ribbons: "Oh wow! I simply wasn't able to put this book down once I started reading. Patton's Way roused all sorts of emotions in me - everything from tears to laughter and even a little envy...ok, a lot of envy. I'm now anxiously awaiting upcoming books in this series - especially Hailey's Game which will have Patton's friend, Hailey, who is the subject of Cole and Kyle's desire. Cole and Hailey's antagonism for each other is just too intense not to result in a seriously passionate relationship and I'm really anxious to find out how Kyle fits into the mix." -- Chrissy Dionne, Romance Junkies
