Book The Catholic Layman Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Catholic Layman Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Arthur Edward Gayer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Layman, Vol. 1 The originators were not satisfied with the prevailing tone and spirit of religious controversy in Ireland, and aimed at improving it and, while doing so, desired to facilitate the researches of the student or religious inquirer, by rendering more easy of access the learned writers usually referred to in such controversies, and by furnishing those who have not a ready access to extensive libraries with extracts and authorities, on the accuracy and honesty of which they might safely rely. The conviction that some such work was needed was based upon the known facts, that good theological libraries are not everywhere accessible to general readers, and that the parochial clergy, even when themselves possessing the necessary col lection of books, are generally so much occupied by their laborious pastoral duties, that they have not the leisure needful to enable them to give their personal assistance in guiding religious inquirers to the sources from which an accurate knowledge on such subjects can alone be derived. It was thought also that it would be more easy to render such subjects generally interesting by treating of them in a monthly periodical, than by publishing at once the same amount of matter, in a more elaborate and systematic form, in a volume which would, from its very bulk, have been more likely to deter than attract the general reader. It also occurred to the originators of the work that the novelty of the experiment of opening the pages of such a periodical freely to the best writers on both sides of the questions in dispute, without any restriction, except that the combatants should preserve a kindly tone and Christian temper, would tend not only to secure a fair and accurate discussion of the great ques tions at issue, but to excite attention and public interest, without rousing bad passions or sacrificing Christian charity. In these expectations they were not disappointed. The work attained such extensive popularity that, (had the object partaken in any degree of the nature of a pecuniary speculation, ) it might have been profitably continued at the very time of its voluntary termination; inasmuch as for, the year preceding it had attained the almost unparalleled circulation of copies monthly. As the writers, however, had accomplished, to the best of their powers, the task they had imposed upon themselves, the success and popularity of the periodical afforded no inducement to them to continue it; and they deemed it more consistent with the character of the work to close its pages while its popularity and success were at the highest, than to wait until either failing health on the part of the Editor, or satiety on the part of the public, might compel its termination with a more questionable success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Fortnightly Review, 1905, Vol. 12 I am satisfied that those who oppose this journal and the causes it strives to serve, will dislike and fear it none the less if it appear but twice a month; while its friends and supporters will prob ably relish its visits all the more keenly for their increased rarity. A word about the change of title. This journal was begun in the great metropolis on Lake Michigan, in 1893, as the chicago review. When after issuing the first number in a large edition, I made application at the Post Office for the second-class privilege, it turned out that another paper had already been entered under that name. The new venture having been advertised extensively, I did not like to drop the distinguishing title of review, and the re fore simply cut out the chicago. Thus my little journal acquired the broad name which has so often during the past eleven yea rs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Pulpit Commentary on Catholic Teaching Vol 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pulpit Commentary on Catholic Teaching, Vol. 1: A Complete Exposition of Catholic Doctrine, Discipline and Cult in Original Discourses; The Creed The Encyclical of His Holiness, Pius X, in which he so strongly insists upon Catechising as one of the chief duties of the priesthood, has induced the publication of this Series. Our aim has been to prepare for the priest and for the catechist a storehouse of well-digested thought from which may be drawn inspiration as well as spiritual food. Here are to be found assembled, carefully and forcefully developed and aptly illustrated and applied, the arguments, sanctioned by the Church and tested by experience, which form necessarily the essential part of the definition and defense of Christian doctrine. While a carefully prepared plan has been followed throughout, we feel that the attractiveness of the Series, no less than its value, are greatly enhanced by the fact that herein one comes in touch with the efforts of many widely known writers and preachers of our day, thus assuring to the work a great variety of form, literary style, and oratorical methods. It is expected that these volumes will be found of value not only for ready reference on points of Christian doctrine, but also as matter for spiritual reading in religious houses, and in presenting points for daily meditation, which is well recognized as a practical, if remote, method of preparation for the sacerdotal duty of catechising. The Series will comprise four volumes, dealing in turn with the Creed, the Commandments, the Means of Grace, and, the Liturgy of the Ecclesiastical Year, and it is hoped that the arrangement of matter, as well as the completeness of treatment, will go far to meet the needs of the hour in this field. Book The Catholic Fortnightly Review Vol 18

Download or read book The Catholic Fortnightly Review Vol 18 written by Arthur Preuss and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Fortnightly Review, Vol. 18: 1911 Dr. Amy E. Tanner has recently, in conjunction with Dr. G. Stanley Hall, President of Clark University, made a careful investigation of the "mediumship" of the celebrated Mrs. Piper, whose "spirit messages" have been so widely heralded as proofs that the dead can and do communicate with the living. The results of this investigation are now before us in a volume titled Studies in Spiritism by Amy E. Tanner. Introduction by G. Stanley Hall (New York: D. Appleton Co. $2.50). A good part of the volume besides the Introduction is written by President Hall, and it includes his personal notes of the seances which he and Dr. Tanner held with Mrs. Piper. These seances were unusual both in the manner in which they were conducted, and the light they throw on the problems involved. For some time a number of those interested in psychical investigation have felt that in order to probe to the bottom of mediumistic communications, it is necessary to inquire closely into the exact condition of the medium while entranced. Pierre Janet long ago pointed out resemblances between certain phases of mediumship and the actions of hysterical patients when hypnotized. More recently Profs. Lombroso and Morselli, after separate clinical examinations, definitely pronounced the Italian medium, Eusapia Palladino, a true hysterical. It seemed a legitimate inference that possibly all mediums, when falling into the trance state, pass into a condition of hysterical dissociation involving the extreme suggestibility, hyperaesthesia of the senses, and other stigmata characteristic of hysteria. If this were so, the fact could readily be ascertained by the application of a few diagnostic tests, and a new vantage point would be gained for the study of the phenomena manifested during the trance. This is precisely what President Hall and Dr. Tanner have done in the case of Mrs. Piper. With her consent, they made her the subject of a number of experiments, utilizing the ingenious resources of modern psychopathology to explore her trance condition. As a result they have been able to make some interesting and helpful discoveries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sign, Vol. 1: A National Catholic Monthly Magazine, 1921-1922 Your approval was grateful to him; he was so simply human, and it won your heart to feel that he accepted your humble friendship. He preached in St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, on the occasion of the first centenary of the great Archdiocese. He had outlined his discourse on our evening's walk. If is a pleasure for the Passionist Fathers to pay a deserved tribute to the memory of Cardinal Gibbons, in the first issue of the sign. We are fortunate in having these personal recollections from Father Felix Ward, C. P. Whose singular privilege it was to have enjoyed the friendship and confidence of his Eminence during many years - The Editors. I was intensely interested and knew that his success would greatly depend upon his feeling well. A slight indisposition from which he suffered now and then would mar his effort. Well, he was never 1n better form than on that morning. The elite of the Church were there from many other lands as well as from our own. His Eminence never did better. We were all very happy and proud of Baltimore. In the evening I had occasion to see him at his own request with Fr. George, C. P., who was just leaving for the General Chapter in Rome. I told his Eminence of the joy we felt at his success that day. He was pleased with the little tribute. He would not dissemble it; he was too fine for that; yet who would say that it detracted in the least from the high motive he had in all he did? He simply remark ed that when Cardinal, then Archbishop, Farley, came to request him to preach that sermon, he begged to be excused. He was busy and had some timidity_ in meeting the demand. After the de parture of the Archbishop, his heart smote him and he wired his acceptance. His success he ascribed to a little act of kindness for a friend. Book The Blessed Virgin Mary in England Vol 1

Download or read book The Blessed Virgin Mary in England Vol 1 written by Brother Anthony Josemaria Fti and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "O Blessed Confidence, O Safe Refuge, Mother of God and Our Mother!" St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109), Doctor of the Church"What is not generally known and only infrequently studied is the role of Our Lady over the centuries as a catechist: teacher of the faith, in a very real sense, primary teacher because she is Mother of God and Mother of the Church and faithful If any one factor might be singled out for the very high level of faith and religious practice in medieval 'merry England' (merry, because Mary's dowry, because consecrated to Mary as her possession and property) it is this Marian catechesis. Only when England deliberately rejected Mary did it cease to be the happy place it once was. Unfortunately, English colonization of other peoples took place only after the repudiation of Mary by England. That is why this catechetical work is especially valuable for the faithful and those who are seeking faith in America and other English speaking cultures. It will bring to their attention precisely what is central to catechetics and so often missing, the presence of Mary, Mother and Teacher. It will make perfectly clear why we need not fewer Marian sanctuaries, but many, many more in all parts of the country where this quiet, but so real and profound influence of the Marian principle of the Church will be felt at every level. It is my prayer and hope that those who read and study this work will find the same inspiration and stimulus that I found in having the privilege to read the manuscript before publication. We are much indebted to Brother Anthony Josemaria Pasquale, a Franciscan Tertiary of the Immaculate and gifted scholar, for the effort he has expended to find qualified contributors and to offer so well edited a book to the general public." -From the Foreword by Father Peter M. Fehlner, FI, theologian, sponsor of the International Symposium on Marian Coredemption
