Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vitally important reference traces the progress of antiarrhythmic drug trials and treatment methods-from the vantage point of the clinicians who designed and conducted the studies to objective views of the strengths and weaknesses of the results, identifying unresolved questions or newly created issues. Reviews significant studies in chronological order-providing a clear, informative account of how current thinking about arrhythmia treatment has evolved. Written by over 35 leading experts in the field, Clinical Trials on the Treatment of Arrhythmias emphasizes the need for science-based therapeutics and rigorously controlled clinical trials of drugs and implantable devices compares electrocardiographic monitoring with electrophysiological techniques for arrhythmia management analyzes the landmark Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial (CAST) evaluates the effectiveness of amiodarone describes sodium and potassium channel blockers and the development of drugs that slow conduction velocity and prolong repolarization and refractoriness investigates the effects of the d-isomer of sotalol on mortality critiques studies on the established efficacy of implantable devices versus amiodarone to benefit post-bypass surgery patients and more! Containing over 600 literature citations, Clinical Trials on the Treatment of Arrhythmias is an invaluable resource for cardiologists and cardiovascular specialists, pharmacologists, pharmaceutical researchers, and graduate and medical school students in these disciplines.

Download or read book Progress in Catheter Ablation written by Liong Bing Liem and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catheter ablation is widely accepted as an effective and safe form of therapy for cardiac arrhythmia. In many instances this curative procedure is considered as the first line of therapy if not the ultimate treatment of choice. With the use of radiofrequency (RF) modality; which has revolutionized the technology from a barotraumatic, potentially injurious procedure using high voltage, direct-current (DC) shock to a safe and relatively painless one; catheter ablation procedure now carries a very low risk and is extremely effective for certain types of arrhythmia. Its efficacy rate in curing supraventricular tachycardia involving an accessory pathway or dual atrioventricular nodal pathways has been near perfect and its application for certain types of atrial and ventricular arrhythmia have also been very satisfactory. However, conventional RF ablation has several well known limitations, most notably is its ability to only produce relatively small, point lesions; rendering it effective only for an arrhythmia with a small and/or a superficial target. It was soon recognized that the technology would not likely to have significant utility in arrhythmia with a more widespread target such as atrial fibrillation or those which involve scarred and deep myocardial tissue such as ventricular tachycardia. Indeed, the application of conventional RF technology in these complex but common arrhythmia has yielded unsatisfactory results.

Download or read book Heart Failure and Arrhythmias written by Johannes Brachmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart failure is a clinical entity characterized by a certain combination of symptoms and signs. Although there is neither a definition covering all aspects of it nor any generally accepted criteria for evaluating its severity, it is the endstage of many different heart diseases, in most cases associated with a poor prognosis. Approximately 50% of the patients with advanced heart failure die from pump failure, whereas the other half succumb suddenly and unexpectedly due to ventricular tachyar rhythmias. Although impaired left ventricular function is the main risk factor, sudden death may already occur in less severe cases of heart failure. In certain cardiac diseases, such as dilative cardiomyopathy, the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias may be related directly to the underlying heart disease, as the frequency and severity (Lown classifica tion) of ventricular ectopics are not related to left ventricular impair ment. Treatment of ventricular tachyarrhythmias is still an unsolved prob lem, especially in patients with heart failure, who need it the most. The vast majority of antiarrhythmic agents are more or less negatively ino tropic and may therefore substantially aggravate ventricular impair ment. Nonpharmacological approaches - such as the implantation of a defibrillator - still require major surgery with the associated increased risk to the patient in heart failure. No agreement has yet been reached on the criteria for evaluating how effective treatment has been, either for heart failure or for ventricular tachyarrhythmias.

Book Deadly Medicine

Download or read book Deadly Medicine written by Thomas J. Moore and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Deadly Medicine tells the dramatic story of a great tragedy involving a class of drugs still on the market. It reveals why the same medical system that brings us lifesaving treatments can create a catastrophe almost beyond imagining." "The story begins with a new heart drug created in the research laboratories of the 3M Company. In animals, this drug appears unusually effective in suppressing irregular heartbeats. Hoping for a blockbuster, 3M launches clinical tests in humans and plans how to seize the market from competing companies. But as medical researchers test Tambocor, as the drug is called, the first signs of potential trouble appear. At Stanford University, a doctor warns that this type of powerful drug may be dangerous. Other experiments fail to demonstrate the expected benefits of such drugs. But with the support of their clinical doctors and with millions of dollars invested in Tambocor, 3M moves ahead and seeks approval from the FDA. Other companies also follow suit with similar drugs." "Questions about the safety of Tambocor have already reached the medical review staff at the FDA in Washington, D.C., where a behind-the-scenes drama takes place. 3M presses for approval of Tambocor, while the FDA staff tries to interpret the meaning of reports that some patients who have taken the drug suddenly drop dead. Without a green light from the FDA, Tambocor may be doomed." "The final chapters in the story unfold as 3M gets to the marketplace and, using all the skills of a modern pharmaceutical manufacturer, persuades doctors to use Tambocor. At the same time, an important clinical trial begins. The National Institutes of Health launch an experiment with more than a thousand patients to measure the benefits of Tambocor and two similar drugs. The shocking results of that study and the response of the doctors and companies who promoted these drugs bring the tragedy to a powerful conclusion." "Deadly Medicine is a human story about the brilliant and driven doctors who worked on Tambocor and similar heart drugs - at pharmaceutical companies, within the FDA, and at university medical research centers. It provides a vivid and disturbing account of the system by which drugs are discovered, tested, and marketed to doctors. Through the tragic story of how tens of thousands of patients died prematurely from one class of heart drugs, Deadly Medicine also exposes major flaws in this system."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
