Origin, Early History, And Present Position In A Consolidated Railway System. By j. ELFRETH WATKINS, C. E. Curator of the Section of Transportation and Engineering U. S. National Museum, Washington. The wheel is a dial by which can be reckoned the degree of progress of every civilization When a people learn how to make and use it, the crooked ways are made straight--the rough places smooth. Footpaths are replaced by level highways, bridges are built over streams once forded, intercommunication is accelerated, commerce is stimulated, and a rapid national development follows. Such is the sequence of events frequently recorded in the history of the remote past, a history again forcibly repeated in this century of progress, when the construction of the iron highway closely followed the invention and perfection of the steam-driven wheel, the introduction of which in America united North and South and East and West in one grand empire. From the beginning mankind has been equally dependent upon the road-maker and the wheelwright for safe and rapid movement over land. So we, who are assembled here to-day to view the handsome stone erected by a generous parent to commemorate an important event in the infancy of an adopted child, are glad to pay homage to the memories of Watt, Trevithick, the two vStephensons, and the other mechanical engineers whose genius made it possible, here, to put the iron horse to work on the Camden and Amboy Railway, in the first movement by steam in the State of New Jersey, three-score years ago to-day. Nor shall we fail to recall with gratitude the remembrance of the labor of the great civil engineer who designed the original rails -- the type now in use in many lands, but first laid upon...

Book The Northern Railroads In The Civil War 1861 1865

Download or read book The Northern Railroads In The Civil War 1861 1865 written by Thomas Weber and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Time has been very good to Thomas Weber’s Northern Railroads in the Civil War, 1861-1865. First published by Columbia University Press in 1952, it has been out of print since the 1970s, but never out of demand. It has emerged as the premier account of the impact of the railroads on the American Civil War and vice versa. Not only did the railroads materially help the north to victory through movement of troops and materiel, but the war materially changed the way railroads were built, run, financed, and organized in the crucial years following the war.”-Print ed. “...eminently worthy of study by those interested in either railroads or the Civil War.” - Robert Selph Henry, New York Times Book Review “Thomas Weber’s study of northern railroads during the Civil War remains the obvious treatment of an important topic. His analysis rests on solid research and leaves no doubt that the North’s excellent use of railroads contributed significantly to Union victory.”—Gary W. Gallagher “Thomas Weber’s... analysis rests on solid research and leaves no doubt that the North’s excellent use of railroads contributed significantly to Union victory.”—Gary W. Gallagher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington is perhaps the single most significant stretch of railroad in the country, connecting dozens of cities like Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. The line carries thousands of passengers daily on a mix of long-distance, regional, and commuter trains. Before it emerged as a vital stretch of railway, some of the earliest railroads in America created a foundation for the future corridor. They constructed a patchwork of lines that laid the groundwork for the Northeast Corridor of today, which later formed integral portions of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. The impact of this line is still felt in the many communities that developed along the tracks. While the Northeast Corridor continues to evolve, it remains as relevant as it was when the original developers conceived the rail link nearly two centuries ago.

Book excerpt: The Smithsonian Institution has been America's museum since 1846. What do its vast collections -- from the ruby slippers to a piece of Plymouth Rock, first ladies' gowns to patchwork quilts, a Model T Ford to a customized Ford LTD low rider -- tell Americans about themselves? In this lavishly illustrated guide to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Steven Lubar and Kathleen M. Kendrick tell the stories behind more than 250 of the museum's treasures, many of them never before photographed for publication. These stories not only reveal what America as a nation has decided to save and why but also speak to changing visions of national identity. As the authors demonstrate, views of history change over time, methods of historical investigation evolve and improve, and America's understanding of the past matures. Shifts in focus and attitude lie at the hearth of Legacies, which is organized around four concepts of what a national museum of history can be: a treasure house, a shrine to the famous, a palace of progress, and a mirror of the nation. Thus, the museum collects cherished or precious objects, houses celebrity memorabilia, documents technological advances, and reflects visitors' own lives. Taking examples from science and technology, politics, decorative arts, military history, ethnic heritage, popular culture and everyday life, the authors provide historical context for the work of the Smithsonian and shed new light on what is important, and who is included, in American history. Throughout its history, Lubar and Kendrick conclude, the museum has played a vital role in both shaping and reflecting America's sense of itself as a nation.
