Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Dermatology, Vol. 23: October, 1911 There has been much difference of opinion not only as to the morphological and cultural characters of the acne bacillus, but also concerning the exact part which it plays in the symptomatology of acne in contra-distinction to that of the staphylococcus. While these points are still in doubt, the employment of vaccines in the treatment of this disease must be, to a large extent, empirical, and it will be necessary in the first place to give a brief account of the work of various Observers who have investigated the subject both from an aetiological and a therapeutic standpoint. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Dermatology, Vol. 23: June, 1911 DI-I. Perne'j', in 1908, published* an excellent clinical study of this rare form of Lupus erythematosus. He collected ten cases, carefully collating and analysing the symptoms. The case which I am now about to relate forms the eleventh of the series. Elizabeth M aged 21 years, came under my care at the Royal Infirmary on June 23rd, 1910. When I first saw her, the face was swollen and suffused with a full deep red colour, symmetrically distributed over the cheeks, nose, eyelids, and ears. The outline of the reddened area was clear and Sharp, and here the network of tortuous dilated capillaries was visible on close inspection. There was no crusting about the orifices of the follicles. The fingers were marked with symmetrical erythematous chilblain-like blotches. The Special feature of the case was the intense hyperaemia, which was not confined to insular areas, but suffused over the face and ears. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Dermatology, Vol. 23: September, 1911 The fact that some of these naevi may undergo certain degenera tive changes, and, as in the case here dealt with, take on a sarco matous development, is in my opinion in favour of their origin from embryonic connective-tissue cells. A further argument in support of this theory is the tendency (if this be indeed the case) for linear naevi to follow the course of the embryonic sutures rather than the lines of cleavage, the course of the blood-vessels or the distribution of cutaneous nerves.
