Book Services for people with neurological conditions

Download or read book Services for people with neurological conditions written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-03-16 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately two million people in the United Kingdom have a neurological condition, including Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease or multiple sclerosis. But individual care is often poorly coordinated and the quality of services received depends on where you live. Some areas simply don't have enough expertise, both in hospitals and the community. In 2005, the Department for Health launched a new Framework to provide services for people with a neurological condition. There have been some improvements, such as a reduction in waiting times. But unlike the strategies for Cancer and Stroke, the model used to implement the Framework hasn't worked. For this clinical area, the Department left the implementation to local health commissioners but gave them no leadership at all and set no clear targets. It set no baselines and failed to monitor progress and so could not hold them to account where things went wrong. The present Government needs to understand what went wrong here for the future. Health spending on neurological conditions increased by nearly 40 per cent in three years. Over much the same period, emergency admissions have risen by 32 per cent and readmissions to hospital within 28 days have increased from 11.2 per cent to 14 per cent. The Department is moving towards a decentralised health and social care landscape. In doing so, it must set clear objectives for joint health and social care outcomes and services for people with neurological conditions

Book The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

Download or read book The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology written by Michael Jeffrey Aminoff and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2012 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive history of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) shows how the Board, by defining core competencies in psychiatry and neurology, established national guidelines and standards for certification during an era of unparalleled technical and therapeutic advances. Understanding how the various specialties and subspecialties evolved, and how the credentialing process was conceived, developed, and adapted to reflect changes in clinical practice, is invaluable to both the candidate approaching the certification exams and the diplomate seeking to maintain certification. In addition, the book's emphasis on the future as well as the past provides a framework for thinking about the contemporary issues that confront the individual clinician and the community as a whole. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology: Looking Back and Moving Ahead provides persuasive testimony that those earning certification have achieved an exceptional standard of professionalism, expertise, commitment to lifelong learning, and adherence to ethical standards, as well as assurance that the ABPN will continue to provide this service to the profession -- and the public -- at the highest level.

Book Services for people with neurological conditions

Download or read book Services for people with neurological conditions written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2005, when the Department of Health introduced its National Service Framework for Long-term Conditions, people with neurological conditions have had better access to health services; but key indicators of quality - such as the rate of emergency hospital readmissions - have worsened. The Department does not know what the Framework and additional spending of nearly 40 per cent over four years have achieved. The Framework was designed to improve care for people with neurological conditions but progress in implementing it has been poor. Access to health services for people with long-term neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease, has improved and waiting times for inpatient and outpatient neurology have decreased since 2007. The number of elective neurological operations performed has also increased. However, the rate of emergency admissions to hospital has increased significantly and there is large variation in emergency admission rates between Primary Care Trusts. Access to services for patients also varies significantly depending on where they live. Many patients, following their diagnosis, are not given information on their condition, about local services or on available support. Ongoing care is fragmented and poorly coordinated and there is a pattern of patients being referred to hospital for treatment, then discharged and then referred to hospital again. The NAO also found that there is poor coordination between health and social services. The number of adults with a physical disability receiving social services has fallen since 2005-06, because fewer people are now eligible for these services

Book The New Psychology of Money

Download or read book The New Psychology of Money written by Adrian Furnham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Psychology of Money is an accessible and engrossing analysis of our psychological relationship to money in all its forms. Comprehensive and insightful, Adrian Furnham explores the role that money plays in a range of contexts, from the family to the high street, and asks whether the relationship is always a healthy one. Discussing how money influences what we think, what we say, and how we behave in a range of situations, the book places the dynamics of high finance and credit card culture in context with traditional attitudes towards wealth across a range of cultures, as well as how the concept of money has developed historically. The book is split into four sections: Understanding Money. What are our attitudes to money, and how does nationality, history and religion mediate those attitudes? Money in the Home How do we grow up with money, and what role does it play within the family? What role does gender play, and can we lose control in dealing with money? Money at Work. Are we really motivated by money at work? And what methods do retailers use to persuade us to part with our money? Money in Everyday Life. How do we balance the need to create more money for ourselves through investments with the desire to make charitable contributions, or give money to friends and family? How has the e-revolution changed our relationship to money? Radically updated from its original publication in 1998, The New Psychology of Money is a timely and fascinating book on the psychological impact of an aspect of daily life we generally take for granted. It will be of interest to all students of psychology, economics and business and management, but also anyone who takes an interest in the world around them.

Book Neural Dynamics of Neurological Disease

Download or read book Neural Dynamics of Neurological Disease written by Christopher A. Shaw and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emerging understanding of age-related neurological disorders suggests that notions of a single causal gene/toxin being responsible is likely incorrect. Neurological disorders probably arise due to a unique intersection of multiple genetic and toxic factors, combined with additional contributions of age, stage of development, immune system actions, and more. This perspective leads to the view that rather than reflecting only one pathway to end-state disease, each is a spectrum disorder, and every individual case is therefore unique. Neural Dynamics of Neurological Disease argues for a fundamental rethinking of what we think we know about neurological disorders, how they arise and progress, and, crucially, what might be done to "cure" them. It first introduces the concept of neural dynamics of neurological disease, then examines various diseases and gives examples of the interplay of elements such as neural systems, cell types, and biochemical pathways that can contribute to disease. The concluding chapters point the way to how the emerging notion of neurological disease as a dynamic process may lead to more successful treatment options. Providing a cross-disciplinary approach to understanding the origin and progression of neurological disease, Neural Dynamics of Neurological Disease is a timely and valuable resource for neuroscientists, researchers, and clinicians.
