Download or read book Quicklet on Michael Lewis Coach Lessons on the Game of Life written by Anita Y. Tsuchiya and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK The book expands on an article, Coach Fitz's Management Theory, Lewis wrote for The New York Times in 2004. A mere 90 pages, the book lacks definitive chapters. Instead, it is simply organized into sections that alternate between flashbacks from Lewis high school years of 1975-8, and his investigation of a conflict at his alma mater in 2004. Lewis constructs his story around themes of duality: past and present, boy and man, coach and parents, fans and critics, memory and investigation, invention and truth. The end result combines a deeply personal memoir about an influential figure from Lewis' boyhood with an exploration into the modern coach-athlete relationship. MEET THE AUTHOR Anita Y. Tsuchiya has been writing for pay for about 15 years. She is fluent in a variety of styles--journalistic, academic, scientific, technical; and across a variety of media--print, web, social. Anita likes to think outside the box, while still keeping track of how far shes pushed the envelope. In addition to writing and editing, she enjoys designing layouts and graphics. Long ago, she was a sponsored athlete and speed freak. Nowadays, she prefers the pursuit of inner peace through yoga and tai qi. She grew up in the Bay Area of California back when Silicon Valley was prune orchards and garlic fields, graduating from San Leandro High and then U.C. Davis. After a decade of living in the Pacific Northwest, shes now happily settled in Salt Lake City, Utah although she does miss the seafood. She shares her home with Molly and Linus, a pair of dogs devoted to teaching her about enjoying life to the fullest. The point, Coach Fitz tells them, is they are spending all their energies on foolish and frivolous activities instead of preparing for those challenges in life that cannot be resolved with anything other than hard work. He reminds them that hard work, not their parents payment of the school tuition, is how ballplayers make the team. With this generational psychology at play, its no wonder Baby Boomer coaches feel frustrated trying to communicate with todays young athletes. And the frustration is mutual. Old-school mannerisms, such as eye contact and a firm handshake, are meant to convey professionalism and confidence. This book examines and details the proof of this fascination seen throughout American society—in our literature, film, and music; our clothing and food; and the iconography of the nation. This momentous four-volume work examines and details the cultural aspects of sport and how sport pervasively reflects—and affects—myriad aspects of American society from the early 1900s to the present day. Written in a straightforward, readable manner, the entries cover both historical and contemporary aspects of sport and American culture. Unlike purely historical encyclopedias on sports, the contributions within these volumes cover related subject matter such as poetry, novels, music, films, plays, television shows, art and artists, mythologies, artifacts, and people. While this encyclopedia set is ideal for general readers who need information on the diverse aspects of sport in American culture for research purposes or are merely reading for enjoyment, the detailed nature of the entries will also prove useful as an initial source for scholars of sport and American culture. Each entry provides a number of both print and online resources for further investigation of the topic.
Download or read book Sport and Film written by Seán Crosson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sports film has become one of commercial cinema's most recognizable genres. From classic boxing films such as Raging Bull (1980) to soccer-themed box-office successes like Bend it Like Beckham (2002), the sports film stands at the interface of two of our most important cultural forms. This book examines the social, historical and ideological significance of representations of sport in film internationally, an essential guide for all students and enthusiasts of sport, film, media and culture. Sport and Film traces the history of the sports film, from the beginnings of cinema in the 1890s, its consolidation as a distinct fiction genre in the mid 1920s in Hollywood films such as Harold Lloyd’s The Freshman (1925), to its contemporary manifestation in Oscar-winning films such as Million Dollar Baby (2004) and The Fighter (2010). Drawing on an extensive range of films as source material, the book explores key issues in the study of sport, film and wider society, including race, social class, gender and the legacy of 9/11. It also offers an invaluable guide to 'reading' a film, to help students fully engage with their source material. Comprehensive, authoritative and accessible, this book is an important addition to the literature in both film and media studies, sport studies and cultural studies more generally.

Download or read book The Innovation Butterfly written by Edward G. Anderson Jr. and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product and service innovations are the result of mutually interacting creative and coordination tasks within a system that has to balance technical decisions, marketplace taste, personnel management, and stakeholder commitment. The constituent elements of such systems are often scattered across multiple firms and across the globe and constitute a complex system consisting of many interacting parts. In the spirit of the "butterfly effect", metaphorically describing the sensitivity to initials conditions of chaotic systems, this book builds an argument that "innovation butterflies" can, in the short term, take up significant amounts of effort and sap efficiencies within individual innovation projects. Such "innovation butterflies" can be prompted by external forces such as government legislation or unexpected spikes in the price of basic goods (such as oil), unexpected shifts in market tastes, or from a company manager’s decisions or those of its competitors. Even the smallest change, the smallest disruption, to this system can steer a firm down an unpredictable and irreversibly different path in terms of technology and market evolution. In the long term, they can shift the balance of the entire innovation portfolio into unplanned directions. More importantly, we describe how innovation leaders can influence the emergent behavior of the system for good or ill. The first half of the book draws parallels from physics, economics, and sociology as well as evidence from multiple industries to describe the structural and behavioral causes of emergent phenomena in innovation settings as well as their often negative impacts. In the second half of the book, we turn to distributed management of innovation under emergence. We show that innovation butterflies, if improperly managed, most often lead to negative outcomes. On the other hand, it is also argued that while the complexity of the innovation system and the desire to experiment and try new and emergent alternatives precludes precise planning, innovation leaders can actually tame innovation butterflies through the design and implementation of appropriate processes, strategies, tools and leadership choices.

Download or read book Fairy Tales in Contemporary American Culture written by Kate Christine Moore Koppy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, American culture is experiencing a profound shift toward pluralism and secularization. In Fairy Tales in Contemporary American Culture: How We Hate to Love Them, Kate Koppy argues that the increasing popularity and presence of fairy tales within American culture is both indicative of and contributing to this shift. By analyzing contemporary fairy tale texts as both new versions in a particular tale type and as wholly new fairy-tale pastiches, Koppy shows that fairy tales have become a key part of American secular scripture, a corpus of shared stories that work to maintain a sense of community among diverse audiences in the United States, as much as biblical scripture and associated texts used to.
