Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black Book of Paisley: And Other Manuscripts of the Scotichronicon; With a Note Upon John De Burdeus or John De Burgundia, Otherwise Sir John Mandeville, and the Pestilence The filed: Book of Baislcy has often been mistaken for an original compilation, but while this is not so, I have ventured to suggest that there is some evidence of the existence of an original Paisley Chronicle, and if this be the case, it will explain how such a mistake arose. I was long puzzled to ascertain anything regarding John de Burdeus, the author of the Tract de Pestilentia, which is copied on a y leaf of the ms. And as no account of him exists in any Book of Reference, so far as I know, I collected in Note B what I had found. This had been printed when I read Mr. Edward B. Nicholson's interesting letter in the Academy of 12th April, 1884, identifying him with Sir John Mandeville. I have added a few paragraphs to my Note, embodying the new information, and connecting it with my own but now that Mr. Nicholson has given the clue, it is to be hoped that either he or some other labourer will follow it up and unravel more fully the history of this mysterious personage. Book excerpt: At the request of David Stewart of Rosyth, a Fife laird, Walter Bower wrote this epic history of the Scots. He took over materials ascribed to an earlier historian, John of Fordun, and continued the history down to his own day. Among the famous stories he covers is the myth that the Scots took their name originally from Scota, Pharaoh's daughter. Scotichronicon has become one of the most important medieval accounts of early Scottish history. It provides a strong expression of national identity and offers a window into the world view of medieval commentators.

Book The North Atlantic Frontier of Medieval Europe

Download or read book The North Atlantic Frontier of Medieval Europe written by James Muldoon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussion of medieval European expansion tends to focus on expansion eastward and the crusades. The selection of studies reprinted here, however, focuses on the other end of Eurasia, where dwelled the warlike Celts, and beyond whom lay the north seas and the awesome Atlantic Ocean, formidable obstacles to expansion westward. This volume looks first at the legacy of the Viking expansion which had briefly created a network stretching across the sea from Britain and Ireland to North America, and had demonstrated that the Atlantic could be crossed and land reached. The next sections deal with the English expansion in the western and northern British Isles. In the 12th century the Normans began the process of subjugating the Celts, thus inaugurating for the English an experience which was to prove crucial when colonizing the Americas in the 17th century. Medieval Ireland in particular served as a laboratory for the development of imperial institutions, attitudes, and ideologies that shaped the creation of the British Empire and served as a staging area for further expansion westward.
