Book The Agatha Principle and Other Mystery Stories

Download or read book The Agatha Principle and Other Mystery Stories written by Elizabeth Elwood and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The least likely person is the killer, and no one is really who they seem.” So Jordan Hope tells his cast as they prepare to rehearse Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. However, Jordan does not realize that, nearby, in the snowy streets of Gastown, a real murder has taken place. By the time the show is over, another will die and The Agatha Principle will strike again. In her fourth book featuring the Beary family, Elizabeth Elwood delivers another thoroughly satisfying collection. “The Agatha Principle” is followed by seven cleverly crafted shorter stories with a variety of settings. In “The Man in the Cage”, a child falls into deadly peril at the 2010 Winter Olympics; a dramatic historical mystery dating back to the War of 1812 is featured in “Tragedy at The Oaks”, and the book closes on a delightfully light-hearted note as the Bearys visit Vancouver’s Bright Nights and solve “The Mystery of the Christmas Train”. With intriguing puzzles to challenge the reader and an engaging story of a charming heroine whose relationship with a Vancouver detective is as captivating as the cases they solve together, The Agatha Principle and Other Mystery Stories is a must for lovers of classic mystery fiction.

Book Running Mother and Other Stories

Download or read book Running Mother and Other Stories written by Songfen Guo and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-24 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guo Songfen's short stories are masterful psychological portraits that play with the echoes of history and the nature of identity. One of the few modernists to truly capture the fallout from such events as the February 28th Incident and the White Terror, Guo Songfen illuminates the quiet core of his characters through a spare and immediate style that is at once a symptom and an allegory of the trauma in which they live. In "Running Mother," a man is torn between his fear of abandonment and his guilt over leaving his family, and therefore his symbolic home, behind. "Moon Seal" follows a woman caught between traditional and modern worlds. In "Wailing Moon," a wife learns a shocking secret after her husband's death, realizing he was never the man she thought him to be. Set in the United States and Taiwan, "Snow Blind" is a multigenerational triptych that portrays the consequences of spiritual malaise, and in "Brightly Shines the Stars Tonight," a general wrestles with issues of memory and self-perception in the final moments before his execution. Guo Songfen's stories play with the hazards of miscommunication, the malevolence of human will, the arbitrary nature of fate, and the burden of historical circumstance. As the general discovers, life is a game of chess, the outcome of which is never certain though it might be logically designed. Showcasing the best of Taiwan's modernist style, these stories are not only an indictment of the human condition but also a powerful comment on the experience of postretrocession Taiwan.

Book A Person Made of Porcelain and Other Stories

Download or read book A Person Made of Porcelain and Other Stories written by Heimito von Doderer and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his eminence, his iconic status, and his masterful command of enormous fictional realms in several huge novels, Heimito von Doderer (1896-1966) still enjoys legendary status close to forty years after his death. The daunting scope of his novels -- his magnum opus is over 1300 pages long! -- has tended to obscure his achievement as a writer of shorter fiction, even in the German-speaking world. Doderer came to esteem his brief stories and tales quite highly, and he took special pride in condensing whole plots and conflicts into one-sentence fictions. By turns playful and poignant, grotesque and idyllic, the short fiction merits a wider audience.
