Book The Australian Flora in Applied Art

Download or read book The Australian Flora in Applied Art written by Richard Thomas Baker and published by . This book was released on 1915 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes 62 colour illustrations and details the use of the Waratah motif in Australian arcitecture and decorative arts. Baker argues that the Waratah motif had figured in almost all of the local branches of the liberal arts and sciences since the Colony's foundation (ie 1788) to his times. In the spirit of Lucien Henry he offered this study as 'a contribution towards the foundation of a National School of Australian Applied Art & Design' so that design students would study the local flora as a source of inspiration. He discusses the various types of NSW, Victorian and Tasmanian waratahs and shows their application in the local architecture, bookbindings, ceramics, enamel tiles, electrical fittings, glassware, horolog, ironwork, lace, modelling, silverware, wallpapers, dados, friezes, windows and woodcarvings. He concludes with articles and legends about the waratah.

Download or read book Australian Flora in Art written by Margaret Betteridge and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney maintains a fascinating collection of early twentieth century applied art objects decorated with Australian wild flowers. The collection reflects the passionate preoccupation of its originator, former Museum curator and botanist, R.T. Baker, with the use of native floras as motifs for design in art, craft and industry. "Australian Flora Applied to Art" began as an exhibition in 1906 in the Technological Museum (the Museum changed its name to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1961) largely as a result of Baker's interest in the subject. A selection from the Museum's collection is presented in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blooms and Brushstrokes takes you on a unique journey through the history of Australian art, one flower at a time, examining the blooms depicted in still lifes, floral portraits, decorative interiors and botanical illustrations by a long line of Australian artists. Mother-and-daughter team Penelope and Tansy Curtin start this fascinating journey in the late eighteenth century, when the traditions adhering to the Western art canon were transplanted into the newly colonised Australia. They follow it through the rapidly developing artistic styles of the early twentieth century, to the new media of the contemporary period. These works of art also shine a light on the role and importance of plants and flowers in everyday life. They illustrate changing floral fashions, as well as highlighting flowers in their various forms - cut flowers, pot plants and gardens. And along the way you'll encounter many of Australia's most significant artists, including John Glover, Arthur Streeton, Margaret Preston, Grace Cossington Smith, John Brack and Margaret Olley, as well as some of Australia's most beautiful, and sometimes intriguing, native flora, such as the waratah and Sturt's desert pea, not to mention perennial garden favourites like roses, sweet peas and daisies. Spectacular, intimate, engaging and meticulously researched - and full of interesting and quirky facts about the flowers and the artists themselves, Blooms and Brushstrokes is a book for art, flower and history lovers alike.
