Inexorably, the march of time, events and affluence modified such radical views as those uttered by George Barry Mallon, the redoubtable city editor of The Sun who wound up in the banking business. Mallon had illustrious company in such rugged individualists as Rupert Hughes, Ellis Parker Butler, Tom Masson and James Montgomery Flagg - the latter two serving as dtc prexies no. 1 and 2. But he was its original Spark plug, gave the club its name, was president at the time he died, in 1928, and has his memory preserved by the club's benevolent Mallon Fund.
