Book excerpt: "Since the first edition of Oregon Painters was published in 1999, it has served as an invaluable reference to the early history of Northwest art, with well-worn and closely guarded copies found in libraries and art collections throughout Oregon and nationally. The original volume was an encyclopedia and index of Oregon painters, with historical data about the evolution of painting styles, educational institutions, and exhibition venues in the Northwest. Oregon Painters: Landscape to Modernism, 1859-1959 expands the focus on the history of painting in Oregon by adding essays on Impressionism and Modernism while using more and better visual examples to illustrate the strength of the state's early painters. In addition, the original indexed content has been edited and condensed. Essays address Indigenous art, the Lewis and Clark Exposition, the Impressionist and Modernist movements, New Deal Art, and the Federal Art Projects in Oregon. The biographical section is now fully illustrated with color images of the majority of the 630 painters' works. A list with an additional 4000 names is also included. Little has been written about the early history of Northwest art and this volume serves as a valuable resource for discovering artists who remain largely unknown but whose works continue to gain in reputation and value. With faithful full-color reproductions from institutional and private collections, it will be treasured by art students, scholars, teachers, gallery owners, museumgoers, collectors, and art lovers everywhere"--

Book North American Women Artists of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book North American Women Artists of the Twentieth Century written by Jules Heller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 1941 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1997. North American Women Artists of the Twentieth Century: A Biographical Dictionary was created to fill a gap of there being a comprehensive reference work like this available, even though the bibliography in English on various aspects of the history of women artists has grown exponentially during the past ten years. As researchers, the editors have been frustrated many times by being unable to locate basic information about many of the artists included in this volume—especially those working outside the United States. This leads directly to another reason for producing this particular kind of reference book—to try and create a better understanding between and among the artists and art audiences in these countries.

Book excerpt: Carl Hall, born in 1921 in Detroit, was an accomplished Magic Realist painter on the brink of a major career in American art when World War II intervened. As a young Army recruit, he was assigned to Camp Adair near Corvallis, Oregon, in 1942. For Hall, Oregon was "Eden Again", and after military service in the Pacific he and his wife settled permanently in the state, which became the focus of Hall's consummate artistry for the next 50 years. Hall became one of western Oregon's most expressive visual interpreters, focusing for most of his lifetime on the terrain of the Willamette Valley, the mountains that enclose it, and the Pacific coast beyond. In exploring Hall's place in Pacific Northwest and American art, this book is a study of regional art and art history, of the interplay betwen regional and national art production in the periods before and after World War II, and of Hall's metaphorical use of natural forms as the basis for personal expression.
