Download or read book Engravings on Wood Classic Reprint written by Society of American Wood Engravers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engravings on Wood Artists, too, manifested only a limited interest in drawing on the block. The obliteration of their work by the process of engraving it was alone an insurmountable barrier to progress in black and white drawing. The introduction of photography upon wood made it practicable to transfer to the block a drawing in black and white, a water color, or an oil painting. The result was that the reproduction of works of a very much higher class was begun, and a much greater degree of intimacy was established between the work of the engraver and the work of the artist. Nothing could be more natural than that in these circumstances the engravers should rapidly invade new fields and carry their artistic sympathies and instincts to the point of themselves becoming artists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of Wood Engraving: With Practical Instruction in the Art for Persons Wishing to Learn Without an Instructor In its preparation great pains have been taken both by explanation and illustration to make the subject clear and comprehensive, and to give directions for the practice Of the art so that a be ginner may be enabled to learn the first principles. It is not reasonable to suppose that a book of this kind, however full and complete, will take the place of a good teacher, but if for any reason a person desires to make a beginning without a master, he will be enabled to do so by heeding its directions. Book Wood Engraving

  • ISBN : 9781567922790
  • Pages : 122 pages

Download or read book Wood Engraving written by Barry Moser and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2006 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " From the artist whom Nicholas Basbanes calls "the most important book illustrator working in America today" comes a primer on the art of wood engraving, a pursuit which one can "learn" in less than an hour but which one can master only through years of persistence, dedication, and indefatigable energy. Learning to engrave a block, says Barry Moser, is like learning to play the piano: it is all practice, practice, practice, all teaching the muscles how to perform the basics. At first your every gesture will be halting, labored, and self-conscious; then at last will come the moment when, like Ashkenazy at the keyboard, you can forget about "process," about "technique," and focus all your mental energy on making art. "There are no shortcuts," warns Moser. "Mastery comes only with time, work, and repetition. A great number of bad wood engravings must be made before one can expect to make a good one. Once your muscles know how to do their work, once they know how to carve thin white lines into boxwood, your mind will be free to invent." There is a lifetime of knowledge in this book: how to prepare a printing block; how to think in the medium's properties of line, shape, and ink; how to transfer a drawing onto a block. There is advice, too, on tools: not only on gravers (burins, scorpers, stipplers, and spitzstickers) but also on lights (you'll need a good strong one) and engraving bags (the leather pillows that cradle the blocks as you carve). Here is how to ink, how to choose paper, and how to print. Here is how to fail, how to move on, and how to acquire the habit of work that leads to real achievement. Wood Engraving is an art lesson and a life lesson. And because it's a book by Barry Moser, it is also a gallery of prints and beautiful to behold."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Book Plates: Engraved on Wood The character of the Wood Block is distinctly appropriate to the treatment of what may be termed the masculine school of heraldic drawing, and which is exceedingly refreshing when one is tired of the finicky and laboured work of the conventional coach-painter school of heraldic draughtsmanship. The nature of the designs need not be confined to heraldry, and, as will be seen from many examples in the following pages, considerable success can be obtained in the treatment of monograms and other personal emblems, and where expense is an item and simplicity a necessity, the adoption of the Wood Block can be strongly recommended. To those whose tastes lead them to admire the more finiz'.ed and delicate treatment of the Copper Plate, the Wood Block with its heavy lines and bold effect does not appeal, and of course there is a great deal to say for the more refined treatment which was dealt with more fully in the companion volume. Book Drawings of Albrecht D rer Classic Reprint

Download or read book Drawings of Albrecht D rer Classic Reprint written by Hans Wolfgang Singer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-13 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drawings of Albrecht Dürer The waywardness of genius, which never progresses on regular lines, must be called to account for this, and probably there is another explanation. We can clearly trace the gradual decay of Diirer's superb artistic powers particularly in his engravings on copper, in his water-colours and wash-drawings, and in his oilpaintings. These techniques are surface methods, and they provide for the possibility of vulgarly realistic, flat, and uninspired work. Perhaps it is only men possessing particularly robust feeling for style who refuse to allow themselves to be seduced into trifling prettiness. But take some technique of an altogether conventional character, such as wood- -engraving or pen- -drawing, and the danger is reduced. Neatness or verisimilitude cannot be achieved by means of these rugged techniques; they do not lay themselves open to trickery, and a man like Durer is not likely to abuse them. Whenever he gives himself up to reflection he may perhaps lose sight of the true principles of art, but when he handles the working tools, of which he may almost be called the discoverer, and certainly the perfector, he cannot misapply them. The St. Paul and the Hangerséerg are pen-and-ink drawings; the Temptation of St. Antnony is executed in the same wonderful medium as the Green Passion. Durer with pen in hand remains the great master. This work, whether early or late, shows no signs of a foolish desire to imitate nature as closely as may be, no hankering after elegance instead of strength. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Concerning the Invention of Printing: In Which the Systems of Meerman, Heinecken, Santander, and Koning Are Reviewed; Including Also Notices of the Early Use of Wood-Engraving in Europe, the Block-Books, Etc After the lapse of a quarter of a century, the plates and last five leaves of the present work of the late Mr. W. Y. Ottley having fortunately been discovered, "An Inquiry concerning the Invention of Printing" is now introduced in its complete form to the public, as a worthy companion to the "Inquiry into the Origin and Early History of Engraving," published by the same author, London, 1816, in two volumes 4to. As is shown by the title itself, this new work does not embrace so wide a range as the Origin and Early History of Engraving. Our author does not profess, in this last performance, to exhaust the question of the Origin and Early History of Printing, but only to confine his investigation to the controversy, as it stands, between the rival claims of Haerlem and Mentz, of John Gutenberg and Laurens Coster. Book The Preparation of Drawings and Other Illustrations for Photo Reproduction Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Preparation of Drawings and Other Illustrations for Photo Reproduction Classic Reprint written by Chas W. Reinhardt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preparation of Drawings and Other Illustrations for Photo-Reproduction When an author or publisher wishes to make sure of a facsimile reduction of as perfect a line drawing as is needed for his-purpose, he will have it reproduced by photo-lithography or by photo engraving on zinc. Photo-lithography is generally employed for making large-sized illustrations for folding sheets and insets, which cannot very well be handled economically by the ordinary printing press. The originals require the same finish as those used for the zinc process. The photographs, reduced to the desired size, are transferred to a polished lithographic stone, which, after being re etched, is ready to print from in the lithographic press. Original photographs may also be repro duced in this way, giving the same general result as by the more familiar half-tone process, de scribed further on. A line engraving on' zinc is produced by first printing a reversed negative, made from a large original, upon a polished and sensitized zinc plate. When inked by means of a printing roller, the ink adheres to the black lines of the plate, corresponding to those on the original drawing. Powdered resin is then sprinkled over the plate. It adheres to the ink lines, and on being heated it melts and forms a protective coating against the etching solution. This solution is next poured over the plate and is allowed to remain until it eats out enough of the metal between the lines to leave the latter in clear relief. More metal is then removed or routed from between the lines by means of a finishing tool. Finally, the zinc plate is mounted upon a wood block and isready for use in the printing press.
