Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his inimitable wit and sparkle, George Bernard Shaw brings us the character of Owen Jack, a salty non-conformist composer said to have been suggested by Beethoven. The relations between Jack and the other wayward bohemians of the story with the more conventional socialites around them offers shrewd insight into the nature of the artistic temperament, with its needs for a kind of commitment that overrides the everyday claims of the heart. A novel which anticipated Shaw's first plays by more than ten years, LOVE AMONG THE ARTISTS shows him already mocking the respectable morality of the Victorian society around him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2014 paperback edition. Written in 1895, George Bernard Shaw's "Sanity of Art" essay is a response to Max Nordau's 1892 book, "Degeneration," which criticized fin de siecle modernist trends by suggesting its practitioners were irrational, amoral, and possibly even insane with neurasthenia. Eschewing conventional morality, Shaw advocates for the right of individuals to decide for themselves the saneness of the maniacal geniuses cultivating the new aesthetic. Book Shaw on Shakespeare

Download or read book Shaw on Shakespeare written by Bernard Shaw and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2002 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Applause Books). "With the single exception of Homer, there is no eminent writer, not even Sir Walter Scott, whom I can despise so entirely as I despise Shakespeare when I measure my mind against his." - From SHAW ON SHAKESPEARE Celebrated playwright, critic and essayist George Bernard Shaw was more like the Elizabethan master that he would ever admit. Both men were intristic dramatists who shared a rich and abiding respect for the stage. Shakespeare was the produce of a tempestuous and enlightening era under the reign of his patron, Queen Elizabeth I; while G.B.S. reflected the racy and risque spirt of the late 19th century as the champion of modern drama by playwrights like Ibsen, and, later, himself. Culled from Shaw's reviews, prefaces, letters to actors and critics, and other writings, SHAW ON SHAKESPEARE offers a fascinating and unforgettable portrait of the 16th century playwright by his most outspoken critic. This is a witty and provocative classic that combines Shaw's prodigious critical acumen with a superlative prose style second to none (except, perhaps, Shakespeare!).

Book Bernard Shaw on the London Art Scene 1885 1950

Download or read book Bernard Shaw on the London Art Scene 1885 1950 written by Stanley Weintraub and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike G.B.S's music and drama criticism and he was the best critic of his time in both categories his art criticism, aside from two or three pieces, is mostly unsigned, never reprinted, and largely unknown. Of the 181 pieces on art collected in this volume, three appear here (from the original manuscripts) for the first time, and 170 have never before been reprinted after their first, often anonymous, publication. Even some of these appear for the first time in accurate form, as newspaper publication sometimes resulted in erratic texts that Shaw, in his scrapbooks of clippings (when he remembered to, he saved copies of his work), hand-corrected.Words, Shaw would point out, were not always adequate to convey the impact of the senses - not even when allied to the composer's art. "The words spoil the music. Michael Angelo wrote reams of sonnets; but what are they besides the speechless prophets and sibyls in the Sistine Chapel? Is there any written or writable description," he argued, "that makes you see the Venus of Milo or the Hermes of Praxiteles? Do the gardeners' catalogues with which Milton padded Paradise Lost do for you what Turner and Monet did with a few dabs of paint?"

Book Pygmalion Other Plays

Download or read book Pygmalion Other Plays written by George Bernard Shaw and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bernard Shaw is one of the most famous and celebrated Irish playwrights and this new collection brings together the very best of his witty and entertaining comedies in one volume; Pygmalion, Major Barbara and Androcles and the Lion. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library; a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover. This edition has a preface by Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench. Pygmalion was first performed in 1914 and was an instant hit which then inspired the hit musical and award winning film, My Fair Lady. It tells the story of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins, who tries to elevate a feisty flower girl out of her working-class roots and into high society. In Major Barbara, idealistic Barbara is a major in the Salvation Army, at odds with her millionaire father as they war over the best route to salvation. Androcles and the Lion is a clever retelling of the Bible story about a gentle Christian who pulls a thorn from a lion’s paw. All three plays are not only wonderfully amusing, they also showcase Shaw's intense concerns about poverty, class and inequality.
