Lahiri delineates the probable areas which could have supplied the raw materials to these cultures, and, on this basis, the essential direction of routes in and across distinct zones. The earliest proto-historic lines of movement--primarily confined to the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent--that developed in the period antecedent to the Harappan civilization are examined. So is the articulation of commerce and movement under the overarching socio-political authority of the Harappan urban phenomenon. The study also analyzes the opening out of the main and secondary arteries in inner India, i.e. across the Aravalli-Cambay divide, by examining the pattern of resource-use and resource-access of the less spectacular neolithic-chalcolithic cultural pockets, spread over large parts of the subcontinent from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu. In the context of the early historical period, an analysis of the literary image of the grand routes of Uttarapatha and Dakshinapatha, and their material correlates in the form of archaeological data scattered along these routes, are also presented.

The Geopolitical Orbits of Ancient India argues that the web of inter-regional interaction was not limited to a particular set of regions but had a pan-Indian ramification. None of the regions could therefore thrive in political isolation. Book excerpt: This book deals with the early development of Śaivism in ancient Dakṣiṇa Kosala, the region that roughly corresponds to the modern state of Chhattisgarh, plus the districts of Sambalpur, Balangir and Kalahandi of Odhisha (formerly Orissa). At the end of the sixth and the beginning of the seventh century, this region was under the control of the Pāṇḍava king Śivagupta alias ‘Bālārjuna' hailing from Śrīpura (the modern village of Sirpur), who was a great patron of religion. Epigraphical evidence, supported by archaeological remains, has shown that by the time of Śivagupta's reign, which lasted for at least fifty-seven years, Dakṣiṇa Kosala was already a rich centre of early Śaivism. In the context of this setting the following research questions were formulated: what circumstances fostered the rise and development of Śaivism in this area, and did the Skandapurāṇa, an important and contemporaneous religious scripture, play any role in that development? An answer to these questions would not only shed light on the religious processes at work in Dakṣiṇa Kosala, but would also touch upon the interplay of political, social, economic and geographical factors.
