This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Temporary Guide to the New York Aquarium After the war of 1812 the southwest battery was called Castle Clinton. In 1822 the United States ceded Castle Clinton to the City of New York; and in 1824 the city leased it to private persons who turned it into a place of amuse ment. Hereafter it was known as Castle Garden, and under that name it became famous. It would seat persons, and could find room in it. It was at one time and another variously arranged and adorned according to the use to which it was put, and this included a great variety of purposes. A summer garden, an opera house, a theatre, a concert hall, an arena for equestrian performances and a place for the reception of distinguished visitors, are some of the phases of its use. Jenny Lind sung in Castle Garden upon her arrival in this country in 18 50, and again before her departure in 1852. Lafayette was received here on his visit to this country in 1824. President Jackson was received here in 1832; President Tyler in 1843, and Louis Kossuth in 1851. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A vertebrate that breathe primarily by means of gills and swim by means of fins is the author’s lead-in to the first chapter called “What are Fish?” Alderton builds the reader’s confidence by providing solid information about what fish are anatomically speaking, how they evolved, how they breathe, how they move, where they live, and how they behave. The new fancier’s aquarium begins in chapter two with instructions on setting up the tank, including selecting the right size, figuring out how many fish, setting the tank, equipment, substrate, heating, lighting, filtrations, plants, water chemistry, assembly, and more. Choosing the freshwater fishes that appeal to the reader is the subject of “Introducing the Categories of Fish,” which schools readers in seven categories: Cyprinids (e.g., goldfish, minnows, and barbs), Characins (e.g., tetras), Cichlids (e.g., oscars, angelfish, and discus), Anabantoids (gouramis, bettas/Siamese fighting fish, and paradise fish), Toothcarps (guppies, swordtails, platies, black mollies, and killifish), Catfish, and others (loaches and Chinese algae eaters). The purchasing, maintenance, and feeding of fish are described in considerable details, and the author gives a basic overview of breeding and keeping fish healthy as well. Resources, glossary, and index conclude the book.

Book Goldfish Varieties and Tropical Aquarium Fishes

Download or read book Goldfish Varieties and Tropical Aquarium Fishes written by William T. Innes and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goldfish Varieties and Tropical Aquarium Fishes: A Complete Guide to Aquaria and Related Subjects There is perhaps no other means of bringing so complete a bit of Nature into our very homes as that afforded by the aquarium. Here we have opportunity for the student, the artist, the scientist and for those who simply love pets. Modern research, by the discovery of a few simple principles, has enabled us to absolutely reproduce the conditions of aquatic Nature, so that now we may have, at first hand, an intimate knowledge of much of that mysterious life of the water-world. Through the glass of the aquarium we have a window where that which we see is only limited by our own capacity for observation. Although interest in aquaria has undergone a great awakening in the past few years, the public in general is still ignorant of the correct principles of aquarium management, and of the wonderful accomplishments of the breeders of fancy fishes. In addition to the extraordinary goldfish forms there are now available for our purposes over 300 other kinds of aquarium fishes. These, with other aquatic animals and a wide range of plants give us a great wealth of material from which to choose. It is the aim of the author and the publishers to present in simple yet comprehensive form a practical digest of all available information on the subject. This, it is hoped, will be of real value to the intelligent aquarist and at the same time give the general public a clearer idea of possibilities under proper management, so that an aquarium will no longer be merely something which must be perpetually re-stocked with fishes, but an endless source of pleasant and profitable observation. The illustrations used are, in nearly all cases, either drawn or photographed from life, thus establishing records which should be of value for present or future reference. In the preparation of this volume the author has received valued assistance from leading specialists, breeders and general experts including the distinguished head of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, Dr. Hugh M.Smith. Special acknowledgment for generous co-operation is tendered Dr. E. Bade, Mr. Franklin Barrett, Dr. Herman Burgin, Mr, Wm. H. De Nyse, Mr. Richard Dorn, Mr. Henry W. Fowler, Mr. Joseph Froelich, Mr. Frank J. Myers, Mr. Wm. L. Paullin, Mr. W. A. Poyser, Mr. Fred. Schaefer, Dr. C. H. Townsend and Mr. Charles E. Visel. Mr. W. L. Brind should receive credit for his assistance in the preparation of the list of Exotic Fishes, his knowledge and specialized technique as a translator proving of particular value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aquarium, Vol. 3: April, 1895 This system, in addition, enables to supply to the specimens the different densities of seasoned sea-water, and also allows control of the temperature of same. The utter weakness of the old system was quite apparent during our visit for the Bay being full of ice, the temper ature of the water in the tanks was down almost to freezing. To keep tropical fishes or plants in such water is out of the question. But this might easily be corrected, as there is a cellar under the old guard-room where stor age tanks might be placed. Not quite so easy, however, would it be to recon struct some of the tanks in order to give greater depth to them, or to other wise change their shape to enable effect ive decorations to show the peculiar characteristics of the different speci mens.
