Book Education Facility Security Handbook

Download or read book Education Facility Security Handbook written by Don Philpott and published by Government Institutes. This book was released on 2007-10-29 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, more than 300 violent deaths have occurred in or near school campuses. The killers, their motivations and backgrounds, and levels of damage inflicted vary, but our response and our goal remains singular: to protect our schools and keep those within them safe. This handbook seeks to help administrators, school boards, contractors, teachers_anyone connected with the design, construction, or administration of schools_achieve this goal by providing easy-to-follow guidelines for building safer school environments. Drawing from various government resources, including the Centers for Disease Control, Department of Education, Department of Defense, and Department of Health and Human Services, this one-of-a-kind handbook takes a two-part approach to protecting schools from threats. The first part addresses how to design and build a safe school. It provides a basic security overview and discusses how to identify critical assets and conduct risk-threat assessments. The second part of the book shifts from infrastructure to inhabitants. Here, you'll learn how to produce a detailed crisis management plan to help your facility prevent incidents from happening and to deal with them swiftly and effectively should one occur. You'll also learn various 'people' policies and practices you can implement to reduce drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, vandalism, and other violence and crime.

Book Challenges and Choices for Crime Fighting Technology Federal Support of State and Local Law Enforcement

Download or read book Challenges and Choices for Crime Fighting Technology Federal Support of State and Local Law Enforcement written by William Schwabe and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the American federal system, most law is cast as state statutes and local ordinances; accordingly, most law enforcement is the responsibility of state and local agencies. Federal law and federal law enforcement come into play only where there is rationale for it, consistent with the Constitution. Within this framework, a clear role has been identified for federal support of state and local agencies. This report provides findings of a study of technology in use or needed by law enforcement agencies at the state and local level, for the purpose of informing federal policymakers as they consider technology-related support for these agencies. In addition, it seeks to characterize the obstacles that exist to technology adoption by law enforcement agencies and to characterize the perceived effects of federal assistance programs intended to facilitate the process. The study findings are based on a nationwide Law Enforcement Technology Survey and a similar Forensics Technology Survey (FTS) conducted in late spring and early summer2000, interviews conducted throughout the year, focus groups conducted in autumn 2000, and review of an extensive, largely nonacademic literature. Book EFFECTIVE RESPONSE TO SCHOOL VIOLENCE

Download or read book EFFECTIVE RESPONSE TO SCHOOL VIOLENCE written by Tony L. Jones and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and comprehensive guide is designed to meet the security response needs of both educators and law enforcement personnel by detailing how an effective response plan can be developed to deal with the issue of school violence. By implementing the guidelines detailed in this book, those in responsible positions can help prevent the incalculable costs of death, facility destruction, disruption of operations, negative public perception, and the resulting embarrassment that these acts cause. The information presented will help reduce the amount of collateral damage to the threat area and adjacent areas. It is designed to expand the effectiveness and performance of special response police forces, fire department personnel, medical aid personnel and ancillary support personnel, as well as provide a comprehensive guide to school administrators and other educators who are concerned with school safety issues. The main idea behind this book is the principle of 'saving lives when all other proactive means have failed.' It focuses on the elements of rapid containment, area control, and the re-securing of the affected area. The author emphasizes that time is an essential factor: the longer the perpetrators remain active, the higher the likelihood that additional people will be killed. In addition, the book is designed to generate a detailed analysis of possible contingency plans for respective emergency responders. An analysis is also included that is site specific and which will help to streamline the planning efforts of all emergency responders, thus heightening personnel survivability and mission success. It is a must-read for those who are responsible for school safety and security.

Download or read book Court Security written by Tony L. Jones and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2003 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a sharp rise in acts of violence in the courts. These acts range from minor disturbances and physical assaults to murder and mass destruction. The potential exists for violence to occur in any court system regardless of location. Unfortunately, many courts at all levels of the judicial system have been slow or even reluctant to implement adequate security measures. This book is designed to prove the folly in such denial. It provides hard statistics and observations that highlight this unique visceral security environment. The text is specifically designed to help those charged with developing and implementing security measures to reevaluate current methods for safeguarding the judicial process. Presented in four sections, the first discusses perpetrators planning an attack and reviews types of perpetrators, target selection, tactics, operations styles, the mechanics of violent attacks, and thwarting attacks. Section two discusses in much detail a multitude of integrated security systems now available for court facilities. The third section presents effective response mechanics for courthouse violence, and the final section reviews tactical considerations for training, containment, and responding to explosive devices. The text serves as a substantial resource in providing the most current state-of-the-art information on security operations and technologies in a very clear but in-depth format. The ultimate goal of this book is to emphasize that court security in today's world must be constantly reexamined, revamped, and upgraded to protect human and physical assets. This unique and comprehensive text will be invaluable to courthouse adminstrators, security professionals, law enforcement personnel, judges, lawyers, and college-level students of security.
