Book Liberation Science Putting Science to Work for Social and Environmental Justice

Download or read book Liberation Science Putting Science to Work for Social and Environmental Justice written by Steven H. Emerman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11-25 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberation Science is the practice of using the knowledge and methods of science to solve the social and environmental problems faced by the poor. Liberation Science can address these problems because it has been freed from the flawed scientific paradigms that are linked to the flawed social paradigms of nationalism and capitalism. Three themes of Liberation Science are: 1) The definition of an ecosystem becomes both more expansive and more holistic to include humans, cultural practices, and the built environment, together with the possibility that an ecosystem could mimic the behavior of a single organism. 2) The logic and methods of science are made available to ordinary people, empowering them to understand the ecologies of their own communities. 3) Science becomes open to complementary philosophical approaches that draw upon cultural and spiritual traditions of particular regions or communities.

This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a breathtakingly beautiful archipelago of twenty-two islands in Lake Superior, just off the tip of northern Wisconsin. For years, the national park has been a favorite destination for tourists and locals alike, but the remarkable story behind its creation is little known. In Environmental Politics and the Creation of a Dream, Harold Jordahl, one of the primary advocates for designating the islands as a national park, discloses the full story behind the effort to preserve their natural beauty for posterity. He describes in detail the political and bureaucratic complexities of the national lakeshore campaign, augmented by his own personal recollections and those of such prominent figures as Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and President John F. Kennedy. Writing in collaboration with Annie Booth, Jordahl recounts how activists, legislators, media, local residents, and other players shaped the islands’ future establishment as a national park.

Book Reduction of Environmental Distraction to Facilitate Cognitive Performance

Download or read book Reduction of Environmental Distraction to Facilitate Cognitive Performance written by Annelies Vredeveldt and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When faced with a difficult task, people often look at the sky or close their eyes. This behavior is functional: the reduction of distractions in the environment can improve performance on cognitive tasks, including memory retrieval. Reduction of visual distractions can be operationalized through eye-closure, gaze aversion, or by comparing exposure to simple and complex visual displays, respectively. Reduction of auditory distractions is typically examined by comparing performance under quiet and noisy conditions. Theoretical reasoning regarding this phenomenon draws on various psychological principles, including embodied cognition, cognitive load, and modality-specific interference. Practical applications of the research topic are diverse. For example, the findings could be used to improve performance in forensic settings (e.g., eyewitness testimony), educational settings (e.g., exam performance), occupational settings (e.g., employee productivity), or medical settings (e.g., medical history reporting). This Research Topic welcomes articles from all areas of psychology relating to the reduction of distractions to improve task performance. Articles can address (but are not limited to) new empirical findings, comprehensive reviews, theoretical frameworks, opinion pieces, or discussions of practical applications.

Download or read book Environmental Publics written by Sally Eden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do ordinary people think about the environment as they go about their daily lives? Does thinking about the environment make them do things differently? This book is the first to explore the idea of ‘environmental publics’, that is, the ways in which ordinary people engage with environmental issues across different practical contexts of work, play and home. Emphasising the practices of ‘environmental engagement’, Environmental Publics examines how people consume the environment, learn about it, campaign for its protection and enjoy it through their leisure time. But the book avoids relying on idealisations of ‘consumers’ or ‘citizens’, or theoretical constructs about behavioural norms that have traditionally dominated research in this field. Instead, this book differentiates environmental publics not by who they are but by what they are doing – their daily practices. It also analyses specifically the geographies of those practices – how what people do affects the environment but in different ways across time and space and at different scales – aspects of practices that are neglected in the literature. With an interdisciplinary perspective, this book will be of interest to students and scholars in geography, sociology, science and technology studies, political science and anthropology. It is written in an accessible and readable style, so as to be useful for preliminary and more advanced courses in environmental management, perception and policy, as well as in studies of modern society, consumption and environmentalism.
