Book The Anatomy of the Intestinal Canal and Peritoneum in Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Anatomy of the Intestinal Canal and Peritoneum in Man Classic Reprint written by Frederick Treves and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Intestinal Canal and Peritoneum in Man The account of the intestinal canal and peritoneum in man that is here presented is derived from the systematic examination of one hundred fresh bodies. Through the kindness of my colleagues, Drs. Sutton and Turner, the pathologists to the London Hospital, I was enabled to open, before the performance of the usual necropsy, all the bodies of patients who had died of other than abdominal disease. The bodies, therefore were quite fresh, and, in many instances, still warm. I had long been convinced that a study of this part of anatomy was rendered liable to many fallacies when conducted in dissecting-room subjects in whom decomposition had advanced, and in whom one could expect, for various reasons, some displacement of parts. Certain questions as to vascular-supply I have followed out in injected preparations. I have also derived considerable information from the dissection of a number of f tuses of various ages. Moreover, through the kindness and courtesy of Mr. Beddard, the Prosector to the Zoological Society, I have been enabled to make a detailed examination of the viscera of many of the Mammalia, the examination including the dissection of forty different species. This latter work has been of the greatest service in throwing light upon many obscure points in human anatomy. Book The Anatomy of the Human Peritoneum and Abdominal Cavity

Download or read book The Anatomy of the Human Peritoneum and Abdominal Cavity written by George S. Huntington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Human Peritoneum and Abdominal Cavity: Considered From the Standpoint of Development and Comparative Anatomy In the following pages an attempt has been made to emphasize the value of Embryology and Comparative Anatomy in elucidating the difficult and often complicated morphological problems encountered in the study of human adult anatomy. Moreover, in addition to the direct advance in the method and scope of anatomical teaching afforded by these aids, it is further hoped that the broader interpretation, both of structure and function, obtained by ontogenetic and phylogenetic comparison, will impart an interest to the study of adult human morphology, such as the subject, considered solely in the narrow' held of its own limitations, could never arouse. The book represents part of the course in visceral anatomy as developed during the past fourteen years at Columbia University. The sections dealing with the morphology of the vertebrate ileo-colic junction and with the structural details of the human caecum and appendix are considered somewhat more fully, as warranted by the extensive material available. The illustrations are for the greater part taken from preparations in the Morphological Museum of the University. Wherever practicable the direct photographic reproduction of the actual preparation is given. . In the case of preparations not suitable for this purpose, careful drawings have been made which offer in every instance a faithful and correct interpretation of the conditions presented by the actual object. A number of the embryonic illustrations are taken from the standard text-books on the subject, due credit being given to their source. I desire to express my sincere thanks to Dr. Edward Learning, of the Department of Photography and to Mr. M. Petersen, artist of the Anatomical Department of the University, for their skilful and thoroughly reliable work in the preparation of the illustrations. Book The True History of the Elephant Man

Download or read book The True History of the Elephant Man written by Peter Ford and published by Allison & Busby. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Carey Merrick, born in Leicester on 5th August 1852, is better known as the Elephant Man. Through horrible physical deformities which were almost impossible to describe, he spent much of his life exhibited as a fairground freak until even nineteenth-century sensibilities could take no more. Hounded, persecuted and starving, he ended up one day at Liverpool Street Station where he was rescued, housed and fed by the distinguished surgeon Frederick Treves. To Treves' surprise, he discovered during the course of their friendship that lurking beneath the mass of Merrick's corrupting flesh lived a spirit that was as courageous as it had been tortured, and a nature as gentle and dignified as it had been deprived and tormented. The subject of several books, a Broadway hit, and a film, Joseph Merrick has become a part of popular mythology. Here, in this fully revised edition containing much fresh information, are the true and unromanticised facts of his life. An extraordinary and moving story, set amongst the brutal realities of the Victorian world, telling of a tragic individual and his survival against overwhelming odds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since RUTHERFORD MORISON left us with the concept of the Omentum being the 'abdominal policeman', clinicians have tacitly assumed that they know sufficient about the structure and function of this organ. However interest in the omentum and its relationship to clinical surgery has recently been develop ing. This book examines all aspects with special reference to surgery and should provide a welcome impetus in research and clinical practice. The editors and contributors have produced a book which is comprehensive and well illustrated and contains detailed refer ences to the important original sources - so essential in a work of this nature. It is written for those who wish to share the delight of acquiring knowledge - even about a comparatively humble organ - as well as for practical surgeons. Both will find ample information to arouse their interest and expand their surgical horizons in exciting ways of which they will almost certainly not have dreamt. I welcome a book of this calibre on a subject which deserves our increasing interest. I delight in the fact that it is dedicated to my friend and colleague MARTIN ALLGOWER.

Book Mesenteric Principles of Gastrointestinal Surgery

Download or read book Mesenteric Principles of Gastrointestinal Surgery written by John Calvin Coffey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mesenteric-based gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery has been practiced internationally for over a century. However, it is not yet universally adopted, and considerable variations exist. Such variations are explained by the historical disparity that has persisted between anatomic and surgical approaches to the intestinal mesentery. While mesenteric-based surgery is far from new, it is remarkable that its anatomic basis has only recently been formally described. This means that key mesenteric principles of intestinal and colorectal surgery can now be taught, conducted and developed, in an entirely standardised manner. This book is composed of two parts. In this new book surgical anatomy, activities and operations are carefully defined, and beautifully illustrated, to enable all surgeons to conduct mesenteric-based intestinal and colorectal surgery, appropriately and with confidence.

Book Management of Abdominal Hernias

Download or read book Management of Abdominal Hernias written by Andrew N Kingsnorth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hernia repair is one of the commonest operations in general surgery. Open or laparoscopic repair of a primary inguinal hernia is a relatively straightforward operation, but more complex abdominal wall hernias demand greater surgical skill and knowledge. The editors have assembled the world's top herniologists to describe and illustrate numerous surgical techniques in detail. The field of herniology has developed rapidly over the last few years. Since the previous edition of this book, published in 2003, new surgical techniques have been developed and many new prosthetic and biologic materials have been introduced. Management of Abdominal Hernias 4e presents an authoritative, comprehensive and fully updated account of the surgical techniques and the available prosthetic materials for performing repair of abdominal wall hernias. Both open and laparoscopic methods are included. It is aimed at general and specialist surgeons in the practice of clinical surgery, as well as trainee surgeons.
