Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Central Nervous Organs: In Health and in Disease No apology is necessary for placing before the English student of neurology Professor Obcrstcincr's exact and impartial account of the anatomy of the central nervous system. The labour of selecting from the mass of literature, with which the subject is every year enriched, the facts of greatest importance, and the theories which harmonise most with one another, must have been immense. It would only be right that the students of all countries should be allowed to participate in the result In giving an English dross to Professor Obersteiner's text, we have attempted to transpose its forms of expression into the English mode. The translator has always held that to transform a book from one language into another needs the collaboration of members of both nationalities, and he wishes to express bis indebtedness to Fraiilein Kloss for having read through the whole of the German text with him. He has also been in constant communication with Professor Obersteiner, who has not only explained obscure passages, but lias also added much new matter and made numerous alterations, which give to the English version the value of a new edition. All additions to the text made by the translator are included in square brackets [ ]. He is also responsible for all footnotes, for the introduction of figs. 2, 8, 4, 5, oa, 0, S, 19a, 84, 57, 149, 150, 151, 15G, 157, 192, 193, 19t. 195, 19G, 197, 198. and for the Appendix. In going through Professor Obersteiner's work, care has been taken to check the references in the text, and in the footnotes to the figures, where they have been re-arranged alphabetically. Book Blood Spinal Cord and Brain Barriers in Health and Disease

Download or read book Blood Spinal Cord and Brain Barriers in Health and Disease written by Hari Shanker Sharma and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-12-21 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research into the anatomy and pathophysiology of the blood-brain and blood-spinal cord barriers suggests that a breakdown in these barriers can result in several diseases affecting the central nervous system (CNS). This book presents new findings in the area of blood-brain barrier research that suggest barriers play important roles in health and disease conditions. It also discusses the development of new drugs that can modulate the barrier function in the CNS and may provide new approaches to treating neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and other motor neuron diseases, as well as spinal cord trauma. Key Features * Presents the recent progress made in the research on the blood-brain and spinal cord barrier * Contains numerous illustrations of light and electron micrographs * Includes Foreword written by two eminent researchers in the field, Milton Brightman and Jorge Cervos-Navarro

Book The Human Central Nervous System

Download or read book The Human Central Nervous System written by Rudolf Nieuwenhuys and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edition of The Human Central Nervous System differs considerably from its predecessors. In previous editions, the text was essentially confined to a section dealing with the various functional systems of the brain. This section, which has been rewritten and updated, is now preceded by 15 newly written chapters, which introduce the pictorial material of the gross anatomy, the blood vessels and meninges and the microstructure of its various parts and deal with the development, topography and functional anatomy of the spinal cord, the brain stem and the cerebellum, the diencephalon and the telencephalon. Great pains have been taken to cover the most recent concepts and data. As suggested by the front cover, there is a focus on the evolutionary development of the human brain. Throughout the text numerous correlations with neuropathology and clinical n- rology have been made. After much thought, we decided to replace the full Latin terminology, cherished in all previous editions, with English and Anglicized Latin terms. It has been an emotional farewell from beautiful terms such as decussatio hipposideriformis W- nekinkii and pontes grisei caudatolenticulares. Not only the text, but also the p- torial material has been extended and brought into harmony with the present state of knowledge. More than 230 new illustrations have been added and many others have been revised. The number of macroscopical sections through the brain has been extended considerably. Together, these illustrations now comprise a complete and convenient atlas for interpreting neuroimaging studies.

Book The Brain the Nervous System and Their Diseases 3 volumes

Download or read book The Brain the Nervous System and Their Diseases 3 volumes written by Jennifer L. Hellier and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 1355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive encyclopedia provides a thorough overview of the human brain and nervous system—the body's "CPU and data network." It covers basic anatomy and function, diseases and disorders, treatment options, wellness concepts, and key individuals in the fields of neurology and neuroscience. Written to be accessible to high school and college students and general readers, this three-volume encyclopedia provides a sweeping overview of the brain, nervous system, and their diseases. Bringing together contributions from leading neuroscientists, neurologists, family physicians, psychologists, and public health professionals, the work covers both brain anatomy and function and neurological disorders, addressing how underlying processes—whether biological, developmental, environmental, or neurodegenerative—manifest themselves. Roughly a third of the entries are about neuroscience and how neurons "talk" to each other in brain circuits to provide normal function. Another group of entries discusses abnormalities or dysfunctions of the brain that develop into disorders or diseases, while a third group focuses on research and experimental procedures commonly used to study the nervous system. The encyclopedia also explores its subject from a wellness perspective, explaining actions that can prevent neurological disorders and injuries and promote general nervous system health. By addressing both ends of the spectrum, the work presents a holistic perspective that will appeal to a broad range of readers.
