Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Bee Journal, 1899, Vol. 39 Now, Mr. Editor, I sometimes think that it looks as if we had an ax to grind on large hives, but we have no pat ent, never did have, and don't care - no, not a copper cent whether any one tries our methods or not. We know that it takes more of a bee-keeper to manage the large hives than the small ones, and_ therefore have no hesitancy in referring bee-keepers to the warning I gave some weeks ago, on try ing new things, tho ours is not a new thing, neither is it our own idea, but only a putting in practice of the ideas advanced by masters in the art long before us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, 1881, Vol. 17 The seeds are borne in pods much the size and appearance of the black mus tard. It blooms early in the spring, and continues in bloom until frost. As the season advances the spikes of the beautiful flowers continue to grow in length, with seeds and flowers in all stages of growth from the full pods to the new Opening bloom. The leaves throw off a very offensive odor when handled. As a honey-producing plant it is second to no other. In our apiary we have forty colonies of bees, and although we_are located among vegetable and fruit gardens our bees prefer this plant to all others. It is not troublesome in cultivated grounds, but prefers the roadside or waste places. We value it highly, and without doubt, is worthy the attention of bee-keepers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, Vol. 7: 1871-72 I now began to suspect that there might be something in the young queens themselves either in their actions, or in their odor, or their voice, 01 want of voice, which made the bees indisposed to disturb them. Therefore, after unqueening the hive, I introduced just hatched queens at once, and found them almost invariably well received. The bees would occasionally seem to manifest some surprise at their presence, and probably, if they could have Spoken their feelings in words, would have said inquiringly - does your mother know you are out 2. Our bees did not do much 011 white clover, but when basswood came in bloom (july 15th), the bees kept us busy emptying out honey. \v e were fairly swimming in honey for about two weeks. We 'never saw bees gather honey faster than they did from basswood blossoms. Good swarms would fill their hives in two days when they had empty comb. Now we see the necessity of urging the bee keepers to cultivate the basswood. There is a great quantity of small basswood trees in the woods in this section which we can get to trans plant. Had it not been for basswood. We would not have got any profit from our bees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
