Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating Tibetan medical system has never been so clearly explained as in this collection of oustanding lectures presented at the University of Virginia in 1980. Tibetan medicine restores and maintains balance among the three humors of the body through a variety of treatments_diet and behaviour modification as well as the use of medicine and accessory theraphy. The basic system has been enhanced by the practical findings of Tibetan physicians who have used the system for more than a thousand years. Dr. Donden holistically considers factors of personality, season, age, climatic condition, diet, behaviour, and physical surroundings in addressing the means for restoring health. The great strength of tibetan medicine is that it is delicately responsive to patients, complete symptom pattern--no complaint being disregarded--and its wide variety of curative techniques are described in this book.

Book Dreamworlds of Shamanism and Tibetan Buddhism

Download or read book Dreamworlds of Shamanism and Tibetan Buddhism written by Angela Sumegi and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2008-05-08 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreamworlds of Shamanism and Tibetan Buddhism explores the fertile interaction of Buddhism, shamanism, and Tibetan culture with the subject of dreaming. In Tibetan Buddhist literature, there are numerous examples of statements that express the value of dreams as a vehicle of authentic spiritual knowledge and, at the same time, dismiss dreams as the ultra-illusions of an illusory world. Examining the "third place" from the perspective of shamanism and Buddhism, Angela Sumegi provides a fresh look at the contradictory attitudes toward dreams in Tibetan culture. Sumegi questions the longstanding interpretation that views this dichotomy as a difference between popular and elite religion, and theorizes that a better explanation of the ambiguous position of dreams can be gained through attention to the spiritual dynamics at play between Buddhism and an indigenous shamanic presence. By exploring the themes of conflict and resolution that coalesce in the Tibetan experience, and examining dreams as a site of dialogue between shamanism and Buddhism, this book provides an alternate model for understanding dreams in Tibetan Buddhism.

Book Tigers of the Snow and Other Virtual Sherpas

Download or read book Tigers of the Snow and Other Virtual Sherpas written by Vincanne Adams and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherpas are portrayed by Westerners as heroic mountain guides, or "tigers of the snow," as Buddhist adepts, and as a people in touch with intimate ways of life that seem no longer available in the Western world. In this book, Vincanne Adams explores how attempts to characterize an "authentic" Sherpa are complicated by Western fascination with Sherpas and by the Sherpas' desires to live up to Western portrayals of them. Noting that diplomatic aides at world summit meetings go by the name "Sherpa," as do a van in the U.K. built for rough terrain and a software product from Silicon Valley, Adams examines the "authenticating" effects of this mobile signifier on a community of Himalayan Sherpas who live at the base of Mount Everest, Nepal, and its "deauthenticating" effects on anthropological representation. This book speaks not only to anthropologists concerned with ethnographic portrayals of Otherness but also to those working in cultural studies who are concerned with ethnographically grounded analyses of representations. Throughout Adams illustrates how one might undertake an ethnography of transnationally produced subjects by using the notion of "virtual" identities. In a manner informed by both Buddhism and shamanism, virtual Sherpas are always both real and distilled reflections of the desires that produce them.

Book Tibetan Buddhist Medicine and Psychiatry

Download or read book Tibetan Buddhist Medicine and Psychiatry written by Terry Clifford and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tibetan medicine is a unique and holistic system of healing. It has been continuously practised for over a thousand years but has still take its place in the history of medicine as we know it in the West. This volume presents for the first time a comprehensive introduction to the arcane Tibetan art of healing. The author has provided a well-documented, original and detailed study of Tibetan psychiatry, the world's oldest system of medical psychiatry. Translated here--for the first time in English--are three fascinating chapters about mental illness from the rGyud-bzhi, the ancient and most important Tibetan medical work. Reproductions of the rare Tibetan texts are also included. Supplementing these translations are extensive explanations of Tibetan psychiatric theory and treatment drawn from the author's research and interviews with Tibetan refugee doctors in India and Nepal. Great care has been taken to identify over 90 pharmacological substances used in Tibetan psychiatric medicines, and these are listed in an appendix along with their English and Latin botanical names. Deeply researched and clearly written, this work will be of interest to both scholars and general readers in the fields of Buddhist studies, holistic healing, Oriental medicine, transpersonal psychology, ethnopsychiatry and medical anthropology.

Book New Essays in Comparative Aesthetics

Download or read book New Essays in Comparative Aesthetics written by Robert Wilkinson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative aesthetics is the branch of philosophy which compares the aesthetic concepts and practices of different cultures. The way in which the various cultures of the world conceive of the aesthetic dimension of life in general and art in particular is revelatory of profound attitudes and beliefs which themselves make up an important part of the culture in question. This anthology consists of entirely new essays by some of the leading, internationally recognised scholars in the field. The subjects addressed include the influence of Upanişadic thought on the classic Indian tradition in aesthetics and the way in which that tradition continues to have relevance to issues discussed today; how Buddhist thought in general and Zen in particular shape aesthetic attitudes in Japanese culture; how Confucianism affected not only the morality but also the classical aesthetics of China; how different ideas of the self and of human nature affect artistic training and practice in different cultures; how feminism can draw inspiration from classic non-European lines of thought in the area of aesthetics, and how different attitudes to nature underpin a whole range of aesthetic beliefs and attitudes in western and eastern thought. These ideas reveal both deep differences and deep similarities between east and west. No-one seeking to understand the cultures discussed in these essays can ignore their aesthetic dimension, which often holds the key to understanding the deepest motives which have formed them.

Download or read book The World and Ourselves written by Venerable Adrian Feldmann and published by Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After seven years experience as a doctor working in hospitals in Australia, New Guinea, and England, I had become convinced that human suffering and happiness are largely rooted in our behaviour, in particular, the attitudes behind our behaviour. Over two and a half thousand years, Buddhist psychology has been adopted into many different cultures, from the Middle East to the Far East, and from Indonesia in the south to Siberia in the north because it unerringly explains what the human mind is, how it functions, and its underlying role in causing both happiness and suffering. These Buddhist teachings may have challenged my scientific world-view to the core, but after eighteen months of thorough investigation, I accepted them to be valid. In 1975 I became a monk in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition to learn more, and to incorporate this knowledge into my life as best I could. I saw this big step to be an opportunity to further my medical training through application of the proverb, ‘Physician, heal thyself.’ Although I still have a long way to go on my own path, many have requested me to share with them what I have learned since then; hence this book. -Venerable Thubten Gyatso The Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive offers this digital edition of The World and Ourselves: Buddhist Psychology. Book excerpt: Buddhism and Bioethics discusses contemporary issues in medical ethics from a Buddhist perspective. The issues examined include abortion, embryo research and euthanasia.
