Book The 2004 Elections to the European Parliament

Download or read book The 2004 Elections to the European Parliament written by J. Lodge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2004 election of the European Parliament marks something of a defining point in the history of European integration. The 2004 elections seemed simultaneously mundane and an accepted feature of a sui generis system, now accepted as a polity in its own right, that a quarter of a century ago had seen politicians fiercely disputing the wisdom and desirability of the people directly electing a European Parliament at all.

Book excerpt: The EU Expansion analyzes the communication strategies of candidates and parties in the 2004 European Parliamentary elections. These elections marked the first opportunity for the selection of representatives to the enlarged European Parliament. They also provided an important opportunity to study how candidates and parties strike a balance between communicating the need to preserve the sovereignty and culture of their countries with the increasing realization that Europe can only preserve its significance in the world by forging a unified economic and political federation. Research and analysis from both longstanding EU nations and those entering for the first time are provided. Chapters focus on the background and significance of the elections; the content of the party and candidate communications in representative countries; news media coverage of the elections; the effects of these communications on voters; and the unique perspectives of how the elections were covered and perceived around the world.

Book European Parliament Elections after Eastern Enlargement

Download or read book European Parliament Elections after Eastern Enlargement written by Hermann Schmitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects on the questions raised by the European Election Study 2004 whose analytical focus was on the legitimacy of EU politics after Eastern enlargement. It also assesses the dynamics and the contents of the campaign, on the determinants of the extremely low turnout in the new countries, and on the reasons of voter choice in West and East. The book also examines the first European Parliament election after the post-communist countries of Eastern Europe joined the European Union. The central question is: what has changed? Are the voters in the new member countries different and if so, why? Did the Union suffer from a loss of democratic legitimacy after Eastern enlargement? Each chapter is empirical-analytical; most are based on the post-election surveys of the group that were conducted in all but one of the 25 member countries, others focus on the results of content analyses of news media and party manifestos. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Integration.

Book European Parliament Elections 2004 in the Ten New EU Member States

Download or read book European Parliament Elections 2004 in the Ten New EU Member States written by Rudolf Hrbek and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft Mbh & Company. This book was released on 2005 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a premise of this book that European integration and EU politics will become more and more politicised. Political parties will, therefore, play a more important role in EU governance. The book envisages the European party system after enlargement, with political parties from the ten new EU member states as new participants and actors in the party arena of the EU. The ten country chapters (authors are experts, most of them from the respective country) deal with the attitudes and activities of political parties towards European integration and the EU (focussing on referendums on EU membership and on the 2004 European elections) and with the affiliations of these parties to the party groups in the European Parliament and the party organizations at European level. The annex informs on parties in the ten new EU member states, on the composition of the political groups in the EP and on the results of the referendums on EU membership and the EP elections in the respective countries.

Download or read book British Politics and European Elections 2004 written by D. Butler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 'non-election' in terms of popular perception, the 2004 European elections in the United Kingdom nevertheless provided a fascinating snapshot of the new, far more fluid electoral trends that have been emerging since the end of the Thatcher era, with Green, Eurosceptical, regional and single issue parties all jostling for electoral space with the bigger three. Like its predecessors, this book documents the background, framework and party preparations; recounts how the campaign unfolded; analyses the results and explores the consequences of the elections in both the British and the European context.

Book Campaigning in Europe Campaigning for Europe

Download or read book Campaigning in Europe Campaigning for Europe written by Michaela Maier and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2004 the sixth direct election of the European Parliament took place. These "founding elections" were supposed to give a remarkable kick-off for an expanded European Union and to strengthen the still fragile European community. However, an all-time low voter turnout indicated that the elections barely evoked public attention and failed to mobilize voters. In this volume political scientists and communication scholars from almost all EU member states and the US investigate - in country chapters and comparatively - the political parties' campaigns, mass media's election coverage, citizens' engagement, and the short- and long-term effects of the European integration process.

Book Un intended Consequences of EU Parliamentary Elections

Download or read book Un intended Consequences of EU Parliamentary Elections written by Wouter van der Brug and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When direct elections for the European Parliament were first organized in 1979, the idea was that such direct elections would increase the democratic legitimacy and accountability of the Parliament. Moreover, the elections were expected to raise public interest, engagement and support for the European project. Did these elections help to increase legitimacy and accountability? Did they increase interest in and support for the 'European project'? Or, did these elections have unintended (and perhaps undesirable) consequences? This volume focuses on the consequences of European elections for public debate and involvement, for party systems, and for public opinion. EP elections have caused a number of intended consequences: the salience of the elections in the media has gone up and over time electoral competition becomes more important, engaging in the campaign can help improve EU evaluations, and Europe as a topic has become more important for voting at EP elections, boosting the prevalence of so-called EU voting. A number of intended consequences have not materialized during the life of the EP so far: knowledge or turnout levels have not gone up and citizens have not become better at judging what political parties are offering. The EP elections have, however, also yielded a number of unintended consequences: EP elections dampen turnout for first time voters in subsequent elections, EP elections cause temporary decline in EU support, and the elections have become a strategic arena for political parties to position themselves on EU issues and for new movements and parties to boost or sustain their success.
