Phillip Lewis, was the railway civil engineer in charge of keeping the vital railway lines open in the face of the continued terrorist attacks. She revisits Rhodesia with a South African media group to report on the war presently raging across the country. Simultaneously the ZANLA forces of Robert Mugabe, working out of Mozambique, are planning to destroy the road/rail bridge over the Zambezi River at Victoria Falls, chiefly to prevent Joshua Nkomo's Russian tanks crossing from Zambia into Rhodesia where they could potentially be used against Mugabe's ZANU party. Book Understanding Video Game Music

Download or read book Understanding Video Game Music written by Tim Summers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Video Game Music develops a musicology of video game music by providing methods and concepts for understanding music in this medium. From the practicalities of investigating the video game as a musical source to the critical perspectives on game music - using examples including Final Fantasy VII, Monkey Island 2, SSX Tricky and Silent Hill - these explorations not only illuminate aspects of game music, but also provide conceptual ideas valuable for future analysis. Music is not a redundant echo of other textual levels of the game, but central to the experience of interacting with video games. As the author likes to describe it, this book is about music for racing a rally car, music for evading zombies, music for dancing, music for solving puzzles, music for saving the Earth from aliens, music for managing a city, music for being a hero; in short, it is about music for playing.

Book Music and Levels of Narration in Film

Download or read book Music and Levels of Narration in Film written by Guido Heldt and published by Intellect (UK). This book was released on 2013 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music and Levels of Narration in Film is the first book-length study to synthesize scholarly contributions toward a narrative theory of film music. Moving beyond the distinction between diegetic and nondiegetic music--or music that is not understood as part of a film's "story world"--Guido Heldt systematically discusses music at different levels of narration, from the extrafictional to "focalizations" of subjectivity. Heldt then applies this conceptual toolkit to study the narrative strategies of music in individual films, as well as genres, including musicals and horror films. The resulting volume will be an indispensable resource for anyone researching or studying film music or film narratology. A PDF version of this book is available for free in open access via the OAPEN Library platform, www.oapen.org It has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License and is part of Knowledge Unlatched.

Book Ruminations Peregrinations and Regenerations

Download or read book Ruminations Peregrinations and Regenerations written by Christopher J. Hansen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peregrinations, Ruminations, and Regenerations: A Critical Approach to Doctor Who examines the famous BBC science fiction show as a cultural artifact in dialogue with other science fiction, with politics and religion, and with the culture at large, both in terms of how it reflects and comments upon that culture and in terms of the audience and the peculiarities of its response. This book enables researchers in film and media to make historical, industrial, aesthetic, and ideological connections between and among Doctor Who and other shows and historical events since its inception in 1963. This volume is a new entry in a relatively new area. As the young fans of Doctor Who have matured, and as many have become scholars, they are returning to the show to consider it from a scholarly perspective. It is also of use in the media studies classroom to address directly the issues presented by the longest running science fiction show in the history of the medium. Peregrinations, Ruminations, and Regenerations considers not only cultural ramifications and connections, but audience studies as well.

Book Listening to Stanley Kubrick

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christine Lee Gengaro
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 0810885646
  • Pages : 317 pages

Download or read book Listening to Stanley Kubrick written by Christine Lee Gengaro and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The musical scores of Stanley Kubrick's films are often praised as being innovative and forward-looking. Despite playing such an important part in his productions, however, the ways in which Kubrick used music to great effect is still somewhat mysterious to many viewers. Although some viewers may know a little about the music in 2001 or A Clockwork Orange, few are aware of the particulars behind the music in Kubrick's other films. In Listening to Stanley Kubrick: The Music in His Films, Christine Lee Gengaro provides an in-depth exploration of the music that was composed for Kubrick's films and places the pre-existent music he utilized into historical context. Gengaro discusses the music in every single work, from Kubrick's first films, including the documentary shorts The Flying Padre and Day of the Fight, through all of his feature films, from Fear and Desire to Eyes Wide Shut. No film is left out; no cue is ignored. Besides closely examining the scores composed by Gerald Fried for Kubrick's early works, Gengaro pays particular attention to five of the director's most provocative and acclaimed films--2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut. For each film, she engages the reader by explaining how the music was excerpted (and changed, in some cases), and how the historical facts about a musical piece add layers of meaning--sometimes unintended--to the films. Meant for film lovers, music lovers, and scholars, Listening to Stanley Kubrick is a thoroughly researched examination into the musical elements of one of cinema's most brilliant artists. Appropriate for a cinema studies or music classroom, this volume will also appeal to any fan of Kubrick's films.

Endlessly cold, they struggle to survive with poisonous rations, a dwindling coal supply, and ships buckling in the grip of crushing ice. But their real enemy is even more terrifying.
