Book Terror Down Under

Download or read book Terror Down Under written by Daniel Best and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, the Australian government banned the production, importation and exhibition of horror films in a move to appease religious communities and entertainment watchdogs. Drawing upon previously unseen government documents, private letters and contemporary newspaper accounts, this book is the first to extensively cover the history of censorship and the early production of horror movies in Australia. Beginning its examination in the late 19th century, the book documents the earliest horror films like Georges Melies' The Haunted Castle (1896), and how Australians enjoyed such films before the ban. The book then explains how certain imports, like 1954's Creature from the Black Lagoon, were able to circumvent the ban while others were not. It also reveals how Australian television, though similarly impacted by government censorship, was occasionally able to broadcast films technically banned from cinematic release. The work concludes with a look at the first Australian horror films produced after the ban was formally lifted in 1969, like Terry Bourke's Night of Fear (1973).

Featured are murderers like the "Granny Killer" John Wayne Glover, William "The Sydney Mutilator" McDonald and "Backpacker Killer" Ivan Milat. Also covered are well-known events like the Snowtown Murders and killer couples like David and Catherine Birnie. Book excerpt: About the Book This book is a pilgrim's journey engraved in its Word. Each poem is a remembrance of a moment, an instant of dream, of desire and at times of questioning. Moonlight Kiss is seeing life as suddenly everything has stopped, realizing that each moment is just a beginning the best life experiences are yet to come! It is treasuring emotions to later offer them in poetry to others, as part of our collective soul. In this journey we are not alone. The writer promotes with her poetry and stories a better understanding of human existence and inner growth. Moonlight Kiss approaches our humanity in spirit, soul and bodies. It attempts to find beauty in solitude, hope in the midst of uncertainty; to lift up physical love, knowing that such love can't exist without that Divine Being: yes, God. Inside each man and each woman there's the profound desire for true intimacy with other human beings, the kind of intimacy where we accept our limitations and honor the qualities of our loved ones. This book honors those we love without losing our appreciation for our true self. It affirms the value of others without losing our individuality. If you, my reader friend, through reading this book, realize that you know and love yourself a little better, and value love even more deeply, the purpose of this book will have been fulfilled.
