Book excerpt: The principal research question of this study is how processes of ice loss contribute to the terminus disintegration of a debris-covered, lake-calving glacier. This is addressed by an application of a field-based strategy which includes extensive field observations of variables, processes and their controls, and subsequent analysis of the data in the light of previous models and concepts. The study attempts to combine and integrate different aspects of glaciological research that have previously been examined mostly separately. It investigates the prevalent processes at the glacier terminus and their controls over different time periods ranging from days to years at Mueller, Hooker and Tasman Glaciers in Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand. The data form the basis for models of calving and pond development and future retreat scenarios.

Climate change impacts in the Himalaya have not been studied in much detail, and respective findings were not presented so far in a comprehensive overview. This book summarizes the current knowledge of interactions between climate change and the dynamics of glaciers, hydrology, and vegetation.

The field trip Glaciers and Glaciology of Alaska for the 28th International Geological Congress will begin in Anchorage on 21 July 1989 and end in Juneau on 29 July 1989. Travel will be by bus, charter boat, and charter aircraft, with stops at Portage Glacier, Whittier, Columbia Glacier, Valdez, Yakutat, Glacier Bay, and Juneau. There is nearly 75,000 square kilometers of glacier ice in Alaska. The major portion is concentrated in the Chugach and St. Elias Ranges through which the field trip traverses. In the region are major advancing and retreating tidewater glaciers, major piedmont glaciers, and surging glaciers. Columbia Glacier is in the early stage of a drastic retreat; Hubbard Glacier is advancing and recently dammed a major fjord; Variegated Glacier recently made a major surge; the glaciers in Glacier Bay underwent a drastic retreat during the last two centuries, resulting in a glacially formed landscape that has only a recent vegetation cover. Southern Alaska has a diverse history, climate, botany, and zoology. Many of the original native cultures of North America came together in Prince William Sound. Russian fur traders and gold miners came and went, and fishing and tourism dominate the present economy. The climate of southern Alaska is maritime, with substantial precipitation and mild temperatures. The topography has a strong effect on the maritime air masses, resulting in heavy snowfalls and the development of active glaciers on seaward-facing slopes. The succession of vegetation is remarkable, ranging from barren, recently ice-free areas to forest-suffocating muskeg. Southern Alaska also is known for an abundance of marine mammals, including sea otter, seal, sea lion, porpoise, and various species of whales. On land, bear, moose, deer, wolverine, and mountain goat are common; other wildlife is abundant also.

Book excerpt: Debris-covered are ubiquitous in the Nepal Himalaya and significantly alter the glaciers response to climate change and have large implications on the development of glacial lakes. The thickness of the debris is largely heterogeneous over the course of the glacier thereby promoting ablation in areas of thin debris and retarding ablation in areas of thick debris. The debris thickness typically increases towards the snout of the glacier, but can be difficult to measure as field measurements are time-consuming and laborious. This body of work utilizes satellite imagery in conjunction with a debris-covered glacier energy balance model to reasonably estimate the spatial variations in debris thickness for glaciers in the Everest region of Nepal. Sub-debris ablation rates may be computed using the same energy balance model, but requires detailed information regarding the properties of the debris and the surface processes. Detailed field data was collected over the 2014 melt season on Imja-Lhotse Shar Glacier to estimate many of the debris properties. This data was also used to model the sub-debris ablation rates to develop an understanding of the critical properties (i.e., thermal conductivity, albedo, and surface roughness) and processes (i.e., accounting for the latent heat flux) required to accurately model the impact of the debris. The heterogeneous debris cover often causes higher melt rates upglacier, which diminishes the glacier’s topographic gradient thereby promoting glacier stagnation and the development of glacial lakes. These glacial lakes form behind terminal moraines comprising soil and loose boulders that are susceptible to fail causing a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). GLOFs can have devastating impacts on infrastructure and communities located downstream; however, assessing the risks associated with these floods has traditionally required detailed field campaigns that are difficult to perform as these glacial lakes are located in remote areas at high altitudes. This body of work develops a holistic hazard assessment using solely remotely sensed data to objectively characterize the threat of a GLOF. This hazard assessment provides valuable information concerning potential GLOF triggers that may be used to direct future field campaigns and ultimately the management actions associated with these glacial lakes.
