Download or read book Boots and Saddles written by Elizabeth Bacon Custer and published by Digital Scanning Inc. This book was released on 1999-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boots and Saddles is in reality a bright and sunny sketch of the life of Mrs. Custer's late husband, General George A. Custer, who fell at the battle of Little Big Horn. After the war, General Custer was sent to the Indian frontier. His wife was of the party and she is able to give in minute detail the story of her husband's varied career since she was almost always near the scene of his adventures. She touches on themes little canvassed by the civilian, and makes a volume equally redolent of a loving devotion to an honored husband and attractive as a picture of necessary duty by the soldier. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Tenting on the Plains - or General Custer in Kansas and Texas: Look inside the book: I must stop a moment and give our Eliza, on whom this battle was waged, a little space in this story, for she occupied no small part in the events of the six years after; and when she left us and took an upward step in life by marrying a colored lawyer, I could not reconcile myself to the loss; and though she has lived through all the grandeur of a union with a man 'who gets a heap of money for his speeches in politics, and brass bands to meet him at the stations, Miss Libbie,' she came to my little home not long since with tears of joy illuminating the bright bronze of her expressive face. ...When Eliza reached New York this past autumn, she told me, when I asked her to choose where she would go, as my time was to be entirely given to her, that she wanted first to go to the Fifth Avenue Hotel and see if it looked just the same as it did 'when you was a bride, Miss Libbie, and the Ginnel took you and me there on leave of absence.' ...After we had strolled through the streets for many days, Eliza always amusing me by her droll comments, she said to me one day: 'Miss Libbie, you don't take notice, when me and you's walking on, a-lookin' into shop-windows and a-gazin' at the new things I never see before, how the folks does stare at us.

Book excerpt: From the time of her husband's death at the Battle of the Little Big Horn until her own death fifty-seven years later, at the age of ninety, Mrs. George Armstrong Custer devoted herself to defending or embellishing her husband's reputation. This account, the second in Elizabeth's trilogy of her life with the General, focuses on the period immediately following the Civil War, when the Custers were stationed in Louisiana, Texas, and Kansas. She portrays the aftermath of the Civil War in Texas and life in Kansas while her husband took part in General Winfield Hancock's 1867 expedition against the Indians between the Arkansas and Platte rivers. Book excerpt: Once more the General leaped into the saddle, and we rode rapidly out of sight. How glad I was, as I watched the set features of my husband's face, saw his eyes fixed immovably in front of him, listened in vain for one word from his overburdened heart, that I, being a woman, need not tax every nerve to suppress emotion, but could let the tears stream down my face, on all our silent way back to the city. Then began the gathering of our -traps,- a hasty collection of a few suitable things for a Southern climate, orders about shipping the horses, a wild tearing around of the improvident, thoughtless staff-good fighters, but poor providers for themselves. Most of them were young men, for whom my husband had applied when he was made a brigadier. His first step after his promotion was to write home for his schoolmates, or select aides from his early friends then in service. It was a comfort, when I found myself grieving over the parting with my husband's Division, that our military family were to go with us. At dark we were on the cars, with our faces turned southward. To General Custer this move had been unexpected.

Book The Civil War Memories of Elizabeth Bacon Custer

Download or read book The Civil War Memories of Elizabeth Bacon Custer written by Elizabeth Bacon Custer and published by Univ of TX + ORM. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of private writings by General Custer’s wife offers an intimate look at their lives before and during the Civil War. In her first year of marriage (1864–1865) to General George Armstrong Custer, Libbie Custer witnessed the Civil War firsthand. Her experiences of danger, hardship, and excitement made ideal material for a book, one that she worked on later in life yet never published. In this volume, Arlene Reynolds presents a readable narrative of Libbie Custer's life during the war years by painstakingly reconstructing Libbie’s original, unpublished notes and diaries found in the archives of the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument. In these reminiscences, Libbie Custer vividly describes her life both in camp and in Washington. She tells of incidents such as fording a swollen river sidesaddle on horseback, dancing at the Inaugural Ball near President Lincoln, and watching the massive review of the Army of the Potomac after the surrender. The resulting narrative tells the fascinating story of a sheltered girl's maturation into a courageous woman in the crucible of war. It also offers an intimate glimpse into the youth, West Point years, and early military service of General Custer.
