Book excerpt: Tensile properties of commercial heats of modified 9 Cr-1 Mo alloy are presented for test temperatures in the range from room temperature to 760/sup 0/C. Data included the effects of melting practice, compositional differences, strain rate (8.0 to 0.00008/min), postweld heat treatment (1 through 112 h at 732/sup 0/C), tempering temperature (732 and 746/sup 0/C versus 760/sup 0/C), isothermal annealing (1038/sup 0/C for 1 h and 704/sup 0/C for 24 h followed by AC), and thermal aging (5000 and 11,600 h at 538, 593, and 649/sup 0/C). The average-to-minimum property range for the yield and ultimate tensile strengths was compared with the similar data range for standard 9 Cr-1 Mo alloy. Tensile data on commercial heats were used to set the room-temperature specified minimum values for the alloy. The conservativeness of the specified minimum values was checked against the data at several strain rates, data after postweld heat treatment at 732/sup 0/C up to 112 h, and data on thermally aged material.

Book The Effect of Long term Aging on the Impact Properties of Modified 9Cr 1Mo Steel

Download or read book The Effect of Long term Aging on the Impact Properties of Modified 9Cr 1Mo Steel written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Charpy impact and room-temperature tensile properties of two heats of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel have been examined after aging at temperatures from 482 to 704C for times up to 75,000 h. In general, aging at lower temperatures (482, 538, or 593C) resulted in little change in the room-temperature tensile properties, but rapid increases in the transition temperature, with the greatest increase for an aging time of 25,000 h. The upper-shelf energy level decreased, reaching a minimum at 25,000 h, followed by recovery at 50,000-h aging. At higher aging temperatures (649 and 704C) there was little change in the transition temperatures, but significant softening at room temperature, and large increases in the upper-shelf energy.

Book Small Specimen Test Techniques for Estimating the Tensile Property Degradation of Mod 9Cr 1Mo Steel on Thermal Aging

Download or read book Small Specimen Test Techniques for Estimating the Tensile Property Degradation of Mod 9Cr 1Mo Steel on Thermal Aging written by V. Karthik and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The degradation in mechanical properties of modified (mod) 9Cr-1Mo steel on thermal aging at 923 K has been studied using the small specimen test techniques?shear-punch and ball-indentation tests. Small volumes of material required for these test techniques make them unique tools for the assessment of service related degradation and failure analysis of structural components. A variety of heat treated microstructural conditions of mod 9Cr-1Mo steel is generated on which both conventional tensile test and shear-punch/ball-indentation tests are carried out. The relationship between conventional tensile properties and small specimen test results is established from these standardization experiments. Small specimens of Mod 9Cr-1Mo steel in the thermally aged conditions are tested using both shear punch and ball-indentation techniques and the tensile property changes are determined. Both these tests identically reflect and quantify the changes in the tensile properties with aging time which correlates well with the microstructural changes observed using optical and electron microscopic studies.

Book Effects of Tempering Treatment on Tensile Hardness and Charpy Impact Properties of Modified 9 Cr 1 Mo Steel LMFBR

Download or read book Effects of Tempering Treatment on Tensile Hardness and Charpy Impact Properties of Modified 9 Cr 1 Mo Steel LMFBR written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of tempering temperature and time on the tensile properties and hardness of modified 9 Cr-1 Mo steel at room temperature and on its Charpy impact energy at room temperature and at 204/sup 0/C are studied. Effects of postweld heat treatment on room-temperature tensile properties were also investigated, and tensile data at elevated temperatures were obtained for selected tempering conditions. The room-temperature tensile properties (strength and ductility), hardness and Charpy impact energy were fitted to a Holloman-Jaffe (HJ) parameter with an optimized constant of 22.3. This parameter allows the trade-off of tempering temperature and time to obtain the desirable properties. The same parameter was also suitable for obtaining the effects of post-weld heat treatment on tensile properties. The effects of specimen size and full-size tubular specimens on tensile properties are presented. The yield and ultimate tensile strengths were plotted as functions of hardness. Optical and scanning electron micrographs showed similar microstructures in specimens subjected to tempering conditions producing the same value of the HJ parameter.

Book Modified 9Cr 1Mo Steel for Advanced Steam Generator Applications

Download or read book Modified 9Cr 1Mo Steel for Advanced Steam Generator Applications written by Philip Maziasz and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are reported from several types of mechanical property tests conducted on a number of commercial heats of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel. Data from long term creep-rupture tests conducted on base and weldment material were compared with an analytical model which has been shown to give good agreement between measured and predicted values. Weldment material had somewhat inferior creep-rupture strength in comparison to base material due to a soft zone at the edge of the HAZ. Data are presented from elevated temperature tensile and creep-rupture tests conducted n material thermally aged for periods of up to 75,000 h (8.6 years). Some reduction in strength was shown to occur in comparison to unaged material. Models were developed for predicting the reduction in short term elevated temperature tensile and yield strength for material thermally aged in the temperature range of 482 to 704°C. Results from Charpy impact tests conducted on material thermally aged at 538°C for periods of up to 75,000 h showed an increase in the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Finally, results from transmission electron microscopy studies were presented to explain changes in mechanical properties due to thermal aging. These observations showed that Laves phase precipitation and recovery occurs on prolonged exposure of this alloy in this temperature range.

Book Nuclear Corrosion Science and Engineering

Download or read book Nuclear Corrosion Science and Engineering written by Damien Feron and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of nuclear materials, i.e. the interaction between these materials and their environments, is a major issue for plant safety as well as for operation and economic competitiveness. Understanding these corrosion mechanisms, the systems and materials they affect, and the methods to accurately measure their incidence is of critical importance to the nuclear industry. Combining assessment techniques and analytical models into this understanding allows operators to predict the service life of corrosion-affected nuclear plant materials, and to apply the most appropriate maintenance and mitigation options to ensure safe long term operation. This book critically reviews the fundamental corrosion mechanisms that affect nuclear power plants and facilities. Initial sections introduce the complex field of nuclear corrosion science, with detailed chapters on the different types of both aqueous and non aqueous corrosion mechanisms and the nuclear materials susceptible to attack from them. This is complemented by reviews of monitoring and control methodologies, as well as modelling and lifetime prediction approaches. Given that corrosion is an applied science, the final sections review corrosion issues across the range of current and next-generation nuclear reactors, and across such nuclear applications as fuel reprocessing facilities, radioactive waste storage and geological disposal systems. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Nuclear corrosion science and engineering is an invaluable reference for nuclear metallurgists, materials scientists and engineers, as well as nuclear facility operators, regulators and consultants, and researchers and academics in this field. - Comprehensively reviews the fundamental corrosion mechanisms that affect nuclear power plants and facilities - Chapters assess different types of both aqueous and non aqueous corrosion mechanisms and the nuclear materials susceptible to attack from them - Considers monitoring and control methodologies, as well as modelling and lifetime prediction approaches

Book Analysis of Weldment Mechanical Properties of Modified 9 Cr 1 Mo Steel

Download or read book Analysis of Weldment Mechanical Properties of Modified 9 Cr 1 Mo Steel written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of welding and weldability studies on modified 9 Cr-1 Mo steel is presented, and microhardness, tensile, creep, and Charpy impact properties of welds made by gas tungsten arc, shielded metal arc, and submerged arc processes are analyzed. Microhardness traverses of modified 9 Cr-1 Mo welds were examined after nominal and extended postweld heat treatments. Microhardness data on modified 9 Cr-1 Mo were also compared with similar results on standard 9 Cr-1 Mo, 2 1/4 Cr-1 Mo, and HT9. Tensile and creep data were primarily on weldment specimens in which the gage length contained the base metal, weld metal, and heat-affected zone. Charpy impact data were primarily on the weld metal, with notch parallel to the welding direction. On the basis of the data presented, it is concluded that standard 9 Cr-1 Mo wire and electrodes can be used to weld modified 9 Cr-1 Mo base metal if welds are given a nominal postweld heat treatment. If welds are to be normalized and tempered, the use of modified wire and electrodes having the base metal composition is recommended.
