Book Tabular Views of Universal History

Download or read book Tabular Views of Universal History written by George Palmer Putnam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tabular Views of Universal History: A Series of Chronological Tables Presenting, in Parallel Columns, a Record of the More Noteworthy Events in the History of the World From the Earliest Times Down to 1890 This chronology of historical events, originally compiled by the late George P. Putnam and forming a part of his comprehensive cyclopedia on The World's Progress, has been carefully revised and brought down to the present time, and it is now issued in a separate form in the trust that every one who needs at his elbow a convenient manual of dates may find his requirements satisfied in this volume. To teachers especially it is hoped that it may prove an important aid in imparting instruction. They more than all others ap preciate the difficulty of permanently fixing in the mind the exact time of great occurrences, and they should accordingly value any means of lessening that difficulty. Such a means, it is thought, is found in the arrangement here adopted of placing in parallel columns on facing pages the events occurring throughout the world at about the same period of time. This calls in the powerful assistance of association in enabling the memory to grasp and retain a hold of important dates by showing at a glance simultaneous occurrences in other countries. It also helps in teaching the lesson that the history of any one nation is only a part of the history of the world and that the proper way to study true history is to follow the progress of the people scattered over the face of the globe. And not of a fragmentary few gathered into one corner of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronological Tables: A Synchronistic Arrangement of the Events of Ancient History In this work Ancient History is dealt with in the form of a chronological compendium, ranging from the received date of the Foundation of Rome to that of the Birth of Christ. The object is to give the reader a synoptic view, and so enable him to correct the narrowing tendencies of a study of Ancient History in isolated branches. Thus by the aid of Chronological Tables I - IV the classical student may see at a glance what political events in Palestine or the Eastern monarchies synchronized with those of Greek and Roman History. In Tables V, VI he may see what stage each country had reached at any given period in respect to science, legislation and literature. Exactness of date for these purposes is not necessary and is certainly unattainable. Every department of ancient Chronology has difficulties of its own, which remain to be dealt with by specialists, and until we approach the Christian era anything but approximate verification is at present impossible in perhaps the majority of cases. We have thought it best to adhere in the main to the by no means unexceptionable schemes of Chronology which have assumed a stereotyped form in our Dictionaries of Dates and popular educational works. Where an event is quite mythical or cannot even be approximately dated we have usually added the mark (?). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blair's Chronological and Historical Tables, From the Creation to the Present Time: With Additions and Corrections From the Most Authentic Writers, Including the Computation of St. Paul, as Connected the Period From the Exode to the Temple The 'present Volume has been te-constructed from the folio Edition by a literary friend, who is disinclined at a late period of life, to appear publicly as the Editor of a critical Work. The thorough revision of the Manuscript, and its transit through the press, having been intrusted to myself, will justify my signature to the Preface, and may be taken to express my perfect confidence of its general accuracy and character. It ought not, however, to be forgotten, that the labour of carrying out the Tables (a task far more complicated than might be inferred from their symmetrical appearance), is to be ascribed entirely to my friend, to whom properly belongs the credit of having revived and enlarged a very valuable Work.
