Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maximizing the use of our visible surface supplies in light of their greatest need in agriculture presents an enormous challenge throughout the world. New techniques in agricultural applications to preserve resources and increase yields are featured. Dams, lakes, and hydraulic features of surface water systems are amply covered, along with the importance of storm water management to growing communities.

Book Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers

Download or read book Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers written by Jacob Bear and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal aquifers serve as major sources for freshwater supply in many countries around the world, especially in arid and semi-arid zones. Many coastal areas are also heavily urbanized, a fact that makes the need for freshwater even more acute. Coastal aquifers are highly sensitive to disturbances. Inappropriate management of a coastal aquifer may lead to its destruction as a source for freshwater much earlier than other aquifers which are not connected to the sea. The reason is the threat of seawater intrusion. In many coastal aquifers, intrusion of seawater has become one of the major constraints imposed on groundwater utilization. As sea water intrusion progresses, existing pumping wells, especially those close to the coast, become saline and have to be abandoned. Also, the area above the intruding seawater wedge is lost as a source of natural replenishment to the aquifer. Despite the importance of this subject, so far there does not exist a book that integrates our present knowledge of seawater intrusion, its occurrences, physical mechanism, chemistry, exploration by geo physical and geochemical techniques, conceptual and mathematical modeling, analytical and numerical solution methods, engineering measures of combating seawater intrusion, management strategies, and experience learned from case studies. By presenting this fairly comprehensive volume on the state-of-the-art of knowledge and ex perience on saltwater intrusion, we hoped to transfer this body of knowledge to the geologists, hydrologists, hydraulic engineers, water resources planners, managers, and governmental policy makers, who are engaged in the sustainable development of coastal fresh ground water resources.

Book Principles of Groundwater Engineering

Download or read book Principles of Groundwater Engineering written by William C. Walton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to bring together under one cover the principles of groundwater engineering. The concise format has produced a handy, comprehensive manual for professionals working in the groundwater industry. The author places emphasis on the application of theory and practical aspects of groundwater engineering. Well-cited references throughout the text guide you through the technology, scientific principles, and theoretical background of groundwater engineering. Exhaustive appendices contain quantitative data necessary for in-groundwater flow and contaminant migration equations. Principles of Groundwater Engineering is the state-of-the-art book that bridges the gap between groundwater theory and groundwater problem solving.

Book Manual of Applied Geology for Engineers

Download or read book Manual of Applied Geology for Engineers written by Institution of Civil Engineers (Great Britain) and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1976 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All engineering structures react with the ground, and most structures make use of materials extracted from the earth. While an engineer cannot be expected to be also an expert geologist, he must have a working knowledge of the subject if his structures are to be economically designed, safely built and safely used. He must also be able to recognise where and when he needs the advice of a specialist. A Manual of Applied Geology is designed as a guide for practising engineers. A team of distinguished engineers and scientists has been assembled to present the basic information which an engineer needs and to explain how best to use this information to deal with problems in his work. Chaptes cover general theory, Formation of rocks, their properties and identification, landforms and soils, geophysical methods, maps and other information sources. the particular problems of terrain evaluation, site selection and investigation and common construction problems (including groundwater control, stability, foundations and underground work) are examined and there are chapters on materials and hydrogeology.Aimed principally at the engineer who is meeting geological problems in his everyday work, this generously illustrated volume will also be useful as an introduction to the subject for first degree engineering students

Book Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks

Download or read book Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks written by B.B.S. Singhal † and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrology is a topical and growing subject, as the earth's water resources become scarcer and more vulnerable. Although more than half the surface area of continents is covered with hard fractured rocks, there has until now been no single book available dealing specifically with fractured rock hydrogeology. This book deals comprehensively with the fundamental principles for understanding these rocks, as well as with exploration techniques and assessment. It also provides in-depth discussion of structural mapping, remote sensing, geophysical exploration, GIS, field hydraulic testing, groundwater quality and contamination, geothermal reservoirs, and resources assessment and management. Hydrogeological aspects of various lithology groups, including crystalline rocks, volcanic rocks, carbonate rocks and clastic formations, are dealt with separately, using and discussing examples from all over the world. Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks will be an invaluable reference source for postgraduate students, researchers, exploration scientists, and engineers engaged in the field of groundwater development in fractured rock areas.
