Book excerpt: The herbicide silvex (2(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy) propionic acid) has been under study by various researchers and has been widely used for control of woody and aquatic vegetation for the past 20 years. This report summarizes studies that are pertinent to the Corps of Engineers Aquatic Plant Control Program. Many different obnoxious aquatic plants are controlled with silvex applied at a rate of 0.5 to 2 ppm. Waterlily, pickerelweed, and milfoil are controlled at the minimum level. Slightly higher rates are required for most submersed aquatic weeds. Repeated applications are often necessary for the control of woody aquatic vegetation. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Preliminary experiments in 1968 indicated that water hyacinths and possibly other aquatic plants could be controlled by 10.6 micron laser radiation. Two effects were noted: an immediate plasmolysis directly proportional to laser energy and a secondary effect at lower levels of irradiation that resulted in death of the plant after a period of time. Studies made in 1969 indicated that split applications of laser energy were not more effective than continuous treatment. Plant count evaluations were significant at a minimum level of 0.5 joules per sqcm(J/sgcm). Histological examination of irradiated leaf tissue did not show extensive cell damage due to laser treatment. Studies made in 1970 indicated that twice-irradiated plants were affected at a level of about 70J/sqcm. (Author).
