Book Building Regulations in Europe A comparison of the technical requirements in eight European countries

Download or read book Building Regulations in Europe A comparison of the technical requirements in eight European countries written by Frits Meijer and published by Delft University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The protection of safety and health of their citizens is a major reason for governments to draw up regulations for the built environment. In the course of time other points of departure, such as utility, energy economy, sustainability and economic motives have come to play a part. For these subjects technical requirements are formulated and the procedures for checking building plans against the requirements and issuing the building permits have been laid down in laws. In search for ingredients for a uniform system of building control in Europe, Delft Technical University and the University of Liverpool carried out an international research project into the systems of building regulations, implementation and control and the systems of technical requirements in the Netherlands, England, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Belgium and Denmark."

Book Innovation in Construction

Download or read book Innovation in Construction written by Marcela Miozzo and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors deserve credit for their collection and skillful processing of qualitative data from five European countries, which have enabled them to identify similarities and differences in the functioning of national construction industries. . . Innovation in Construction is an important contribution to increasing one s understanding of innovation in the construction industry. Ina Drejer, Building Research and Information This book deals with some of the most important questions in innovation research such as the role of corporate governance, national systems of innovation, and government regulation in the development and adoption of innovations. In particular, it presents new evidence on the factors which shape innovation in construction by drawing on extensive interviews with construction firms across Europe. The authors offer broad lessons for the systems of innovation approach and suggest that particular structures of ownership and management, and inter-organisational relations are responsible for variations in the economic performance of the construction industry in different European countries. The particular challenges posed by the adoption of sustainable technologies such as natural thermal insulation and active solar heating systems are also explored. These environmental innovations are expected to have an impact on sustainable building and regeneration, and at a more general level can help identify the factors which can facilitate or inhibit the innovation process. Importantly, the book does not simply focus on the relationship between technology, firm organisation and competitiveness, but also considers the social and institutional aspects which affect the construction sector s ability to innovate. The extensive case studies from 5 European countries allow the reader to analyse innovation performance from an international comparative perspective. Innovation in Construction represents an important contribution to the theoretical debate on innovation. It will be highly useful to scholars and students interested in innovation studies, environmental management, and construction management and economics.

Book Building Construction Before Mechanization

Download or read book Building Construction Before Mechanization written by John Fitchen and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1989-04-03 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were huge stones moved from quarries to the sites of Egyptian pyramids? How did the cathedral builders of the Middle Ages lift blocks to great heights by muscle power alone? In this intriguing book John Fitchen explains and illustrates the solutions to these and many other puzzles in preindustrial building construction. This is the first general survey of the practices and role of the builder (as opposed to the designer) in constructing an array of structures. Fitchen's approach gives a valuable hands-on feel for what it's like to work with ropes and ladders, wedges and slings; with crews engaged in well digging, bridge building, and the transporting of obelisks hundreds of miles by water and over land. The buildings discussed range from the tents, tepees, and igloos of nomadic tribes to the monumental pyramids of Egypt, the temples of Greece, the aqueducts of Rome, and the cathedrals of medieval Europe.
