Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every time I visited the Citadel, I would imagine what I could do to enhance its glory and bring attention to its soul, says artist Dale Chihuly of his recent project in Jerusalem. In July 1999, Chihuly's grandest and most ambitious undertaking opened at the Citadel, and will remain there for a year. Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000 serves as a focal point for the city's millennium celebration. This volume highlights 14 major installations commissioned by the Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem. The exhibition is made up of more than 10,000 pieces of glass, blown in France, Japan, the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, and the United States. Within the walls of the Citadel, Chihuly unexpectedly married ancient and modern forms, animating the stone architecture with glass. Mediterranean sunlight illuminates the Blue Tower, the red and yellow Spears, the Moon, and the Crystal Mountain. Chihuly has transformed the Citadel, once a defensive fortress, into a garden of colour and celebration. Commentary by William Warmus.

Book Chihuly Over Venice

Download or read book Chihuly Over Venice written by Dale Chihuly and published by Chihuly Workshop. This book was released on 1996 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bound like an artist's sketchbook this book documents the culmination of this amazing artistic odyssey that took the artist from his Seattle Boathouse hot shop to Nuutajarvi, Finland; Waterford, Ireland; Monterrey, Mexico; and finally Venice to blow glass. In the factories in those locations, Chihuly and his team of American glass blowers worked with native artisans more accustomed to making functional objects than art. Together they created the 14 chandeliers that graced the campos and canals of Venice for a remarkable time in September 1996. In her essay Dana Self, curator of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, muses on the relationship of Chihuly's glass and 'The Spectacle of Beauty'. She concludes that Chihuly's fantastical explorations demonstrate that beauty does produce a meaningful experience of the world. Writer William Warmus chronicles the culmination of this two-year project with his diary entries. Full-colour photographs record for readers the installations as they were assembled. An extensive chronology traces the artist's career.

Download or read book Chihuly Seaforms written by Dale Chihuly and published by Chihuly Workshop. This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artforum art critic Joan Seeman Robinson discusses Chihuly's most exquisite and ethereal series, invoking the spontaneous automatic drawings of the Surrealists, the water lilies of Claude Monet, the action painting of Jackson Pollock, and, most cogently, Henri Matisse's Swimming Pool. Oceanographer and explorer Sylvia Earle, former Chief Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, finds in Chihuly's evocative 'Seaforms' not only 'reflections of skill, passion, teamwork and sheer genius' but also 'tributes' to the sea. Together these writers help to illuminate what many consider Chihuly's quintessential series, which was begun in 1980. The saturated colour of the 40 full-colour pages, including many double-page spreads, conveys the sensuousness of Chihuly's work.

Book excerpt: Dale Chihuly's largest installation to date comes to life in this book which showcases the qualities his work is most known for: grandness of scale, vividness of colour, and scope of imagination. This gorgeous volume features 65 pages of full-colour photographic documentation of the commissioned sculpture, 'Fiori di Como' at the Bellagio resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The more than 40,000 pound glass artwork hangs overhead in the hotel's main lobby from an intricate armature of metal 'branches'. The book displays in vivid detail the colourful garden of glass and its 2,000 pieces as well as reproductions of working faxes and fax drawings from Chihuly to Steve Wynn during the conceptual development of the project. The highly sculptural style of the piece and the broad range of colours make it a departure from anything Chihuly has done before. As Chihuly himself has said, Everything about the 'Fiori di Como' was new -- the scale, the armature, and the glass.. This beautiful clothbound book provides image after image of the creative process and the final result of this monumental sculpture.

Book Venetians

  • ISBN : 9781576840139
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Venetians written by Dale Chihuly and published by Chihuly Workshop. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most flamboyant and whimsical of all Chihuly's series. The voluptuous glass pieces, shown in full-colour, were inspired by Art Deco Venetian glass during Chihuly's Fullbright scholarship in Venice. With collaboration between Chihuly and glass master Lino Tagliapietra, the series evolved over a period of only seven blowing sessions. Though at their core, the Venetians are vessels of some sort, they explode outward when wrapped with spiralling coils, leaves, feathers, and claws in startling colour combinations. Chihuly chronicles the evolution of the series in his reflective essay included in this volume. His bold and colourful drawings illustrate how the artist guided his team to make these pieces. This oversized book offers a breathtaking view of Chihuly's Venetians, which, more than any other of his series, embody personality and individual character. This book begins with an essay by Ron Glowen.

Book Chihuly Drawing

  • Pages : 175 pages

Download or read book Chihuly Drawing written by Dale Chihuly and published by Chihuly Workshop. This book was released on 2003 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles four decades of Dale Chihuly's work on paper, a dynamic collection that is a fascinating study of variety. Many of the drawings are drenched in thick, bold layers of colour. Others are more elusive -- just a hint of form sketched with a fistful of pencils or a confidently manipulated charcoal. Over the years his style has evolved, becoming more abstract and more elaborate, and his drawings, in some cases, have become much larger. But there are no rules; a technique that Chihuly favoured a decade before may resurface again. The excitement of Chihuly's work on paper is in its unpredictability, and that in two dimensions Chihuly is free to let his grandest schemes come to fruition. Above all, Chihuly's work on paper revels in the monumental creativity that is essentially Chihuly.

Book excerpt: "Trade blankets, often called "Pendletons" after their best-known manufacturer, were woven in hundreds of combinations of colors and designs by woolen mills. Chihuly, who had studied weaving and textiles, became intrigued by the blankets' vibrant beauty and began collecting them. Included in this collection are blankets not only from Pendleton Woolen Mills, but also from other manufacturers, such as J. Capps and Sons, Buell Manufacturing Company, Racine Woolen Mills, and Oregon City Woolen Mills. Also included in this volume are selections of Chihuly's series of Blanket Cylinders. This series features an innovative technique: threads of colored glass are fused into a drawing of a blanket design, then picked up on the surface of hot cylinders, resulting in an image that vividly evokes a blanket's unique texture, pattern, and colors. Chihuly's Pendletons has 172 full-color reproductions, including blankets from the artist's private collection, historical photographs, and the distinguished Blanket Cylinders series. The volume also features an essay by Chihuly on his attraction to the blankets and his creative process in developing the series"-- Jacket.
