Book excerpt: Rocknocker: A Geologist's Memoir reviews the life of George Devries Klein, an immigrant who made it through the American System as a geologist. It chronicles his life from early childhood, graduate school, working as an oil company researcher, university professor, science administrator, and as a geological consultant. The book includes the highs and lows of George's life. Each chapter also summarizes key lessons learned making the book even more useful to young scientists as a career guide. Isolated incidents relevant to the book, but shortened, are included as postscripts at the end of each chapter. A highly informative read that shows what is needed to develop a productive career in the sciences. About the Author George Devries Klein is a widely respected geologist, both in academe and the petroleum industry. Born in 1933 in the Netherlands, he immigrated to the USA in 1947. He graduated from Mamaroneck Senior High School and earned his BA, MA, and PhD in geology from Wesleyan University, The University of Kansas, and Yale University, respectively. His career spanned work as a research geologist at Sinclair Research, Inc., followed by service as a faculty member at the Universities of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Illinois @Urbana-Champaign, where he was a full professor from 1972 to 1993. He served as President of the New Jersey Marine Science Consortium and as New Jersey State Sea Grant Director and then formed his own consulting company, SED-STRAT Geoscience Consultants, Inc., in 1996. He is best known for his research on tidal sedimentology, proposing the "Tidalite" concept. He authored over 350 refereed papers, abstracts and reports, including 11 reference books, and one novel, Dissensions. His publications include the book Sandstone Depositional Models for Exploration for Fossil Fuels and a widely-used Wall Chart on "Vertical Sequences and Log Shapes of Major Sandstone Reservoir Systems." His consulting client work is in the US Gulf of Mexico and Gulf Coast, Illinois basin, Appalachian basin, Angola, Senegal, South Africa, East Africa, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Mexico, Romania, Russia, and the eastern Mediterranean. He has discovered, either solo or as part of consulting teams, approximately 160 Million Barrels of oil and 3 Trillion Cubic Feet of natural gas. He currently resides with his wife, Suyon (originally from Seoul, Korea), in Sugar Land, Texas.

Download or read book Whatever is Under the Earth the Geological Society of London 1807 2007 written by G. L. Herries Davies and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2007 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geological Society has much to be proud of in its two hundred years of history. Not only is it the oldest society of its kind in the world, but it has also seen many of the important developments in the science played out within its premises. Gordon Herries Davies has expertly and entertainingly laid out this narrative for us, steering a skilful course between the necessary facts and the anecdotes that bring these facts alive. Institutional histories can be dull affairs - a litany of minutes and memoranda - but this history suffers from no such problem. This book will appeal to the historian of science, geoscientists in all branches of the subject and anyone with an interest in the development of scientific ideas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Download or read book Life Traces of the Georgia Coast written by Anthony J. Martin and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what left behind those prints and tracks on the seashore, or what made those marks or dug those holes in the dunes? Life Traces of the Georgia Coast is an up-close look at these traces of life and the animals and plants that made them. It tells about how the tracemakers lived and how they interacted with their environments. This is a book about ichnology (the study of such traces) and a wonderful way to learn about the behavior of organisms, living and long extinct. Life Traces presents an overview of the traces left by modern animals and plants in this biologically rich region; shows how life traces relate to the environments, natural history, and behaviors of their tracemakers; and applies that knowledge toward a better understanding of the fossilized traces that ancient life left in the geologic record. Augmented by illustrations of traces made by both ancient and modern organisms, the book shows how ancient trace fossils directly relate to modern traces and tracemakers, among them, insects, grasses, crabs, shorebirds, alligators, and sea turtles. The result is an aesthetically appealing and scientifically grounded book that will serve as source both for scientists and for anyone interested in the natural history of the Georgia coast.

Download or read book Transformative Education written by Charlotte Graham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformative Education aims decisively to transform the world of education and to nurture the next generation to become problem-solvers and creative thinkers, empowered with the necessary skills to make this world a better place. It provides practical methods for sustainable, integrative, and active learning, and investigates ‘the why’ behind these proven and effective methods. Discussing the different levels of subject integration in school, from intradisciplinary to transdisciplinary teaching, the authors analyse their potential holistic impact and knowledge retention effectiveness. With a substantial section on the efficacious teaching of the increasingly indispensable field of critical thinking, this book is built up first around a discourse of the intended methodology, secondly, it also includes a very practical mid-section with direct and meticulously described project ideas for teachers to try out, and finally a discussion and an analysis on what effects the proposed techniques might have and how teachers and students could be facilitated in their learning processes by school leaders and administrators. This pioneering endeavour is an important text for education professionals globally, as well as for the policy makers that regulate their work. It may also be of interest to parents and to a wider society. Additional digital resource content is available online and includes practical examples, explanations and video to help support sustainable, integrative and active learning.

Book excerpt: The Festschrift Eugen Karl Kempf is a proceedings volume of the 15th International German Ostracodologists’ Meeting which was held October 11th to 14th, 2012 by the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the University of Cologne. The selected contributions cover a broad range of biological and palaeontological topics that rely on sound taxonomy and serve as a tribute to the Kempf Database of Ostracoda including a biography on Eugen Karl Kempf. In detail, the scientific contributions are covering freshwater and marine genera/species and the parasitic family Entocytherids. Revisions of genera and descriptions of new species are one focus, but also new studies on biogeography, ecology and morphology add to the value of the proceeding.
