Book Teaching Art by Teleconferencing in Rural Schools

Download or read book Teaching Art by Teleconferencing in Rural Schools written by Mary Judith Bewer and published by Brandon, Man. : Rural Development Institute, Brandon University. This book was released on 1994 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An art course was adapted from the Manitoba curriculum for grade 9 and delivered via teleconferencing to three small, geographically isolated schools in Birdtail River School Division, Manitoba. Participants included 1 adult planning to study art at a community college and 38 students in grades 8-10 at a German-speaking Hutterian K-10 school, a French-speaking K-11 school, and an English-speaking college preparatory school. The course was based on previous experience with an experimental teleconference art course, a review of practices of teaching art by distance education, and consultation with 11 Manitoba teachers who had taught other subjects via teleconferencing. Course design involved writing workbook modules that could also be completed via independent study, selection of texts and art reproduction kits for purchase by participating schools, preparation of supplementary visual displays, and planning of strategies to increase interactions between teacher and students and among students from different sites. Implementation steps included preliminary visits to each site for classroom preparation and orientation of students and class proctors, preparation of detailed proctor guides, meetings with principals to gain their support, and arrangements to transport student art assignments. Course evaluations by the teacher, students, and proctors indicated that teleconferencing, while no one's method of choice, was a viable delivery method producing results similar to those in regular classrooms. Recommendations relate to the status of teleconference courses in schools, provision of quality resources, and the search for appropriate models for teleconference courses. Contains 31 references. Appendices include evaluation questionnaires and course materials. (SV)

Book Teaching Artist Handbook Volume One

Download or read book Teaching Artist Handbook Volume One written by Nick Jaffe and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Artist Handbook is based on the premise that teaching artists have the unique ability to engage students as fellow artists. In their schools and communities, teaching artists put high quality art-making at the center of their practice and open doors to powerful learning across disciplines. This book is a collection of essays, stories, lists, examples, dialogues, and ideas, all offered with the aim of helping artists create and implement effective teaching based on their own expertise and strengths. The Handbook addresses three core questions: “What will I teach?” “How will I teach it?” and “How will I know if my teaching is working?” It also recognizes that teaching is a dynamic process that requires critical reflection and thoughtful adjustment in order to foster a supportive artistic environment. Instead of offering rigid formulas, this book is centered on practice—the actual doing and making of teaching artist work. Experience-based and full of heart, the Teaching Artist Handbook will encourage artists of every experience level to create an original and innovative practice that inspires students and the artist.

Book Computer Art Methodologies for Teachers

Download or read book Computer Art Methodologies for Teachers written by Leah H. Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a case study of experienced art teachers who learned to use computer technologies and how that knowledge was passed on to others in the art education profession. The contributions of other art teachers to the dissemination of this knowledge are also delineated. The study took place primarily during computer art technology classes taught during summer sessions in the years 2000 to 2003. The 2003-year was a follow-up observation of a teacher/student from the original computer art technology classes for art teachers and how that teacher used the information learned from previous summer sessions to also teach art and technology to elementary students. Research followed the participant/observer format with the researcher taking a different approach each session. Roger's (2003) Diffusion of Innovations studies provided a framework for analyzing the research. This framework helped to examine primary and secondary subjects in this research and to categorize them along already established research. Findings in this study included the importance of modeling good technology teaching methods such as step-by step instruction, guided practice, integration of technology into the curriculum, use of projectors and peripheral digital computer equipment, and use of presentation programs. Also of great importance were networking, seeking valid research in innovation, seeking state and/or federal backing and grant monies, and art associations along with their continuing role in professional development. From this study it was recommended that institutions of higher learning require art education students to take at least one computer graphics class, a computer literacy class, and a teaching methods class, each of which incorporates computer technology. It was concluded that art, education, and technology may be separate entities, but these areas should be integrated because even though they may be separate areas of instruction, real life situations integrate all of our competencies into one complete life experience.

Book excerpt: This study investigated Turkish and Canadian primary school students' ways of expressing their perception of interactive art education through video conferencing and that of cultural interaction through pictorial representations. The qualitative research data were collected in the form of pictures and interviews on interactive art education along with cultural components depicted in pictures. The results obtained were analyzed and interpreted based on the quantitative content analysis method. The research results revealed that the majority of the students explained their viewpoints through the effectiveness of the process. The students highlighted the importance of learning a different culture, learning about a different art technique and recognizing new friends in the process.
