Book excerpt: In the first chapter of this book, which deals with the world and work of teachers, themes are explored that capture the essential "dailiness" of working in schools, and a general description is given of what it is like to be a teacher. The cyclical rhythms and patterns of the school year are considered, as are the formal and informal guidelines used by teachers in their interactions with students and school personnel. The social realities of teaching in the elementary school are delineated in the second chapter. Case studies of two schools are presented to illuminate differences which may exist in school climates. Chapter 3 points out the sharp difference between teaching at the elementary and secondary school school. Major themes in discussing secondary level teaching include living in a bureaucracy, working with adolescents, and the faculty culture. The problems inherent in relationships between teachers and principals and the responsibilities of leadership are discussed in the fourth chapter. In the fifth chapter, descriptions of school improvement efforts are analyzed. The final chapter explores fundamental realities and needs to be considered in improving inservice teacher education, and the roles of teachers and administrators in these endeavors. (JD)
