Book Teacher s Handbook of Manual Training Metal Work

Download or read book Teacher s Handbook of Manual Training Metal Work written by J. S. Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Handbook of Manual Training Metal Work Before commencing the work planned out in the following pages, the boys will have had considerable practice in the use of the rule, compasses and set squares, to which should be added that of the drawing board and T-square. They should also understand thoroughly the meaning of plan and elevation, and be able to draw the plan and elevation of simple models. A working acquaintance with scale drawing is also necessary as a preliminary to the study of metal work. All drawing should be executed to as large a scale as possible. As in most Manual Training Centres there is only one forge and one teacher, it is difficult to provide work at the forge for each boy. This difficulty is partially obviated by working certain exercises conjointly, namely, 11 and 12, 18 and 19, and 25 and 26. Similarly exercises 13 and 14 are worked conjointly, because, as a rule, only one set of stocks and dies is supplied. Heavy chipping and surfacing are put late in the course, as this work is exhausting to most boys until their muscles have become hardened by practice in the use of the file. The method of holding the various tools, and detailed instructions for marking out and drawing the exercises contained in this book, are fully illustrated by diagrams in the key to be published shortly. Book Metal Work

Download or read book Metal Work written by Hugh M. Adam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metal-Work: A Handbook for Teachers and Students The subject-matter of this book is presented to the student accompanied by a word of warning: It is not to be considered as an exhaustive textbook on metal-work, but as an attempt to set down as clearly as possible an account of the equipment necessary, and of the operations and general principles involved in the use of metal-work as a method of education. No model courses of work are presented to be adopted wholesale. The best courses are those determined by the varying conditions under which the teacher works, and which are evolved from the experiences and circumstances arising in the handicraft-room. The step from wood-work to metal-work in the handicraft-room is a natural one. This subject introduces the pupil to new conditions, new forces - at least, if not new, so disguised as to be unrecognizable - and consequently, to the necessity of adapting himself to his new environment, in order to meet by new methods the obstacles presented in the new material, tools, etc. His outlook is thus broadened and his nature receives a new discipline, in which process the attitude of mind created in the wood-work room will serve him well. This change of atmosphere revivifies his enthusiasm - a powerful ally in the hands of the expert teacher. Metal-work has suffered considerably at the hands of the ill-informed. No doubt the term has led to erratic conclusions concerning its scope and objects, and to its being considered an unsuitable subject for the handicraft-room. Book Handcraft in Wood and Metal

Download or read book Handcraft in Wood and Metal written by John Hooper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handcraft in Wood and Metal: A Handbook of Training in Their Practical Working for Teachers, Students,& Craftsmen In preparing this work the authors have endeavoured to show the possibilities of craftwork as an educational subject, and to briefly indicate its cultural aspects. One of the prejudices against handcraft or so-called "manual work" has been that it had more value from a physical than an educational or cultural standpoint, with the result that "handcraft" in schools has too frequently been classed as "carpentry", The authors think that lessons based upon the historical phases of craftwork, particularly in the development of types of construction in furniture and metalwork, and the growth of tools from prehistoric times, together with the study of simple applied art as displayed in historic work, will do much to increase the value of handcraft in schools. Whilst the work has been prepared primarily for the teacher, the aim has been to render treatment of the subject such as to make the work of value and interest to the craftsman, and a useful guide for the pupil or student. As an aid to class teachers in helping on a technical side in central schools, they hope it will find a place among the books pertaining to craft and general education. It is hoped further that the work will be regarded as a collection of suggestions and data, rather than an attempt to produce a series of models. The authors believe that at least one aspect of handcraft has been almost entirely neglected in the past, i.e. the artistic side; and, whilst not claiming any special merit for the design of the models dealt with, they have endeavoured to embody some artistic merit in the designs, and have tabooed the meaningless joints and collection of joints which have only a limited mechanical value. Book Elementary Metal Work

Download or read book Elementary Metal Work written by Charles Godfrey Leland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Metal Work: A Practical Manual for Amateurs and for Use in Schools This work contains an explanation of the processes of cold metal work, chiefly as applied to decorative or industrial art, and especially with a View to their being taught to children in ele mentary and preparatory schools. The author believes that it may be regarded as thoroughly adapted to this purpose, he having been founder and director for four years of the industrial art classes in the public schools of Philadelphia, in which some of these branches of metal work were taught with great success, so that many of the pupils on leaving school immediately Obtained well-paid employment. As many as six girls at once thus went from the metal class to a factory, the proprietor of which declared that all the preliminary education, which gave him more trouble than anything else, had been perfectly im parted. On another occasion, a principal in an ornamental metal factory, after careful examination of the design and work of the pupils, offered to take forty together, and guarantee living wages from the beginning, and a rapid increase of payment, if their parents would consent. All that these children knew, and much more, is set forth clearly and briefly in this work, so that no person, young or old, who wishes to learn metal work either as an art or a trade, can with a proper degree ofinterest and industry fail to do so. Book Industrial Education

Download or read book Industrial Education written by Samuel G. Love and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Education: A Guide to Manual Training The lessons in this volume were originally pre pared as a guide for the instructors and pupils in the Industrial department of the schools with which the authors are connected. A complete system of Manual Training having been organized and put in operation, it became necessary that it should be formulated for the convenience of the classes, and for the guidance of the instructors in charge of them. It was not supposed that there would be a demand for the publication of this course in Manual Train ing. But the subject of Industrial Education has been rapidly growing in the minds of teachers and others interested in the development and growth of educational methods. Inquiries came with increased frequency as to what was being done in the J ames town schools, and whether it was practicable to make Manual Training a feature of education in the public schools. It was thought best to make no reply until actual tests, in all the grades from the Primary to the High Schools, had been made. Book The Manual Training School Comprising a Full Statement of Its Aims Methods and Results

Download or read book The Manual Training School Comprising a Full Statement of Its Aims Methods and Results written by C. M. Woodward and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual Training School, Comprising a Full Statement of Its Aims, Methods, and Results: With Figured Drawings of Shop Exercises in Woods and Metals This book really consists of four Parts; namely: - I. The Historical Introduction and Chap. XIV. II. The exposition of the methods and scope of the school, with full details as regards the manual elements, in Chaps. II., III., IV., and XV. III. The results of manual training, as shown by the records and testimony of graduates and others, in Chaps. V. and VI. IV. Discussions of the educational, social, and economic bearings of manual training from various standpoints and at various times, in Chaps. VII. to XIII. It is possible that this classification may be of value to those who come for suggestions in specific directions. To others the arrangement may appear illogical, and the repetitions unnecessary. In defence of the arrangement I must say that I have had in mind two things: first and foremost, the probable state of mind of the reader who comes to this book to learn of a matter of which he has heard much, but knows little. He wants facts, arguments, and speculations, according to the stage of his progress in finding out what manual training really is, and what it aims at. And secondly, the desirability of showing clearly the growth and progress of ideas in the development of the school. As to the occasional repetitions of statements and arguments, I will say that no one is likely to read the book through consecutively. Those who do me the honor to read it at all will read by topics and separate chapters, and being thus read I doubt if the repetitions will be found objectionable. Of necessity, much common material appears in every address. The earlier addresses were quite general in their treatment, and I have preferred to let them stand fairly complete. I trust no apology will be necessary for inserting addresses which, in one form or another, have already appeared in print.
