Book Flying on Instinct

Download or read book Flying on Instinct written by L. D. Cross and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2012 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were nicknamed Snow Eagle, Flying Knight, Bush Angel, Punch, Doc and Wop. They worked in open cockpits and flew through cold, snow and fog without the benefit of radios, maps or weather reports. They flew over the Barrens, frozen lakes, boreal forests and mountain ranges by dead reckoning and line of sight. They landed on makeshift runways, glaciers, muskeg, tundra and glassy lakes. Comrades of the wilderness, they were Canada's early bush pilots. L.D. Cross brings us the incredible stories of the brave and enterprising pilots who rolled back the boundaries of western and northern Canada, delivering mail, medicine, miners and all the supplies needed by frontier settlements. Flying such planes as Curtiss, Bellanca, de Havilland, Fairchild, Junkers, Norseman, Stinson and Vickers, they were the off-roaders of aviation, venturing where no others dared to go. Climb into the cockpit with these pioneering pilots for an exciting trip into Canadian aviation history.

Book Pilot Logbook Lies and More

Download or read book Pilot Logbook Lies and More written by Lester M. Zinser and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time . . . How else do you start a story on a white blank screen? Do you open the tale with some far-out statement that you, the author, have to maintain chapter by chapter? Or do you leave the writer some leeway to spin his or her story? Once upon a time gives the author that privilege. Lets start with a life that began because of some quirk of nature. Normally, when the many halves of a new life struggle their way up the warm, moist channels to meet the other half of a new life, one new life-form develops. However, in this particular sexual encounter, two spermatozoa overcame the odds and managed to penetrate a pair of ovum. Now two new life-forms begin their migration down the channel to fasten their growing cell bodies to the nourishing walls of the womb. Nine months later, two baby boys were born (a traumatic event probably best not remembered) and began their life journey. In the evolving tale, it will be up to the reader to determine if this is a compilation of fact, a mixture of fact and fi ction, or just pure fi ction. The fraternal twins grew up on a farm in the Midwest, and some of the rigors of farm living in the 1920s are part of the tale. However, it is used only to set the stage for one twins story. But wait! The twins were not alone. Two brothers preceded them so closely in this family that only two years separated the youngest from the oldest. A sister was born when the twins were fi ve. The mother of these fi ve children died shortly after the fi fth baby was born. The fathers mother stepped in to care for the newborn and at the same time tackled the task of raising and infl uencing the lives of four rambunctious boys. Five years later, the father remarried, and fi ve children were born to this second marriage, but so much later that they had little to no infl uence on the character of the elder fi ve. The fi rst four were close enough in age to present the same parental challenge as quadruplets. Each brother probably infl uenced another; however, the story is not about some personality trait caused by the close association with one another. A graduate student in psychology could write an A+ term paper on the interaction of the four completely different personalities. No doubt the many daily routines of maintaining a general-purpose farm infl uenced the path each brother would follow in later life. As soon as each boy was big enough (age six or seven), they were assigned choresthat is, feed the chickens, feed and milk the cows, slop the pigs, clean the barn, and so onto do all the daily menial jobs it takes to operate a small farm stead. The tasks grew harder as the brothers aged and grew stronger. Farming in the early years of the twentieth century required input from every able-bodied individual needing the life-supporting sustenance provided by the land and animals. The father, the Old Man, on this farm had a constant battle to keep everyone carrying their share of the workload.

How do you float weightless inside an airplane? Did you prefer flying for the Air Force or the commercial airlines? What was it like to refuel the SR-71? People often want to hear tales from my flying days, so I perused my 3000+ flights, gathering the best stories to share. Thanks to a broken leg during flight school, Arthur Gould Lee gained valuable time flying trainers before he was posted in France during World War I. In November 1917 during low-level bombing and strafing attacks, he was shot down three times by ground fire. He spent eight months at the front and accumulated 222 hours of flight time in Sopwith Pups and Camels during a staggering 118 patrols, and engaged in combat 56 times. And yet he lived to retire from the RAF as an air vice-marshal in 1946. Lee puts you in the cockpit in this compelling personal account of life as a fighter pilot at the front. At turns humorous and dramatic, this thoughtful, enlightening memoir is a classic of military aviation.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A TODAY SHOW #ReadWithJenna BOOK CLUB PICK • The unforgettable story of a daredevil female aviator determined to chart her own course in life, at any cost: an “epic trip—through Prohibition and World War II, from Montana to London to present-day Hollywood—and you’ll relish every minute” (People). After being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. There--after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes--Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight. At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe by flying over the North and South Poles. A century later, Hadley Baxter is cast to play Marian in a film that centers on Marian's disappearance in Antarctica. Vibrant, canny, disgusted with the claustrophobia of Hollywood, Hadley is eager to redefine herself after a romantic film franchise has imprisoned her in the grip of cult celebrity. Her immersion into the character of Marian unfolds, thrillingly, alongside Marian's own story, as the two women's fates--and their hunger for self-determination in vastly different geographies and times--collide. Epic and emotional, meticulously researched and gloriously told, Great Circle is a monumental work of art, and a tremendous leap forward for the prodigiously gifted Maggie Shipstead.

Book Flying the SR 71 Blackbird

Download or read book Flying the SR 71 Blackbird written by Richard H. Graham and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone who has ever wondered what it's like to fly the SR-71 on a secret Mach 3 reconnaissance mission, this book has the answer. Completely redesigned and updated with photos from author Colonel Richard H. Graham's personal archive, as well as a new introduction, Flying the SR-71 Blackbird details what an SR-71 mission entailed, from planning to donning a pressure suit to returning to base. The Lockheed SR-71, unofficially known as the Blackbird, was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed Skunk Works. The aircraft flew so fast and high that not one was ever shot down, even by a missile. SR-71 pilot and instructor Colonel Richard Graham offers a rare cockpit perspective on how regular Air Force pilots and navigators transformed themselves into SR-71 Blackbird crews, turning their unique aviation talents to account in an unprecedented way. Arguably the world's foremost expert on piloting the Blackbird, Graham takes readers along on an operational mission that only a few Air Force pilots have ever experienced.
