Book A History of the Mishnaic Law of Purities Part 2

Download or read book A History of the Mishnaic Law of Purities Part 2 written by Jacob Neusner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-10-18 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Jews from the period of the Second Temple to the rise of Islam. From 'A History of the Mishnaic Law of Appointed Times, Part 1' This volume introduces the sources of Judaism in late antiquity to scholars in adjacent fields, such as the study of the Old and New Testaments, Ancient History, the ancient Near East, and the history of religion. In two volumes, leading American, Israeli, and European specialists in the history, literature, theology, and archaeology of Judaism offer factual answers to the two questions that the study of any religion in ancient times must raise. The first is, what are the sources -- written and in material culture -- that inform us about that religion? The second is, how have we to understand those sources in reconstructing the history of various Judaic systems in antiquity. The chapters set forth in simple statements, intelligible to non-specialists, the facts which the sources provide. Because of the nature of the subject and acute interest in it, the specialists also raise some questions particular to the study of Judaism, dealing with its historical relationship with nascent Christianity in New Testament times. The work forms the starting point for the study of all the principal questions concerning Judaism in late antiquity and sets forth the most current, critical results of scholarship.

Book Horses People and Parliament in the English Civil War

Download or read book Horses People and Parliament in the English Civil War written by Gavin Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horses played a major role in the military, economic, social and cultural history of early-modern England. This book uses the supply of horses to parliamentary armies during the English Civil War to make two related points. Firstly it shows how control of resources - although vital to success - is contingent upon a variety of logistical and political considerations. It then demonstrates how competition for resources and construction of individuals’ identities and allegiances fed into each other. Resources, such as horses, did not automatically flow out of areas which were nominally under Parliament’s control. Parliament had to construct administrative systems and make them work. This was not easy when only a minority of the population actively supported either side and property rights had to be negotiated, so the success of these negotiations was never a foregone conclusion. The study also demonstrates how competition for resources and construction of identities fed into each other. It argues that allegiance was not a fixed underlying condition, but was something external and changeable. Actions were more important than thoughts and to secure victory, both sides needed people to do things rather than feel vaguely sympathetic. Furthermore, identities were not always self-fashioned but could be imposed on people against their will, making them liable to disarmament, sequestration, fines or imprisonment. More than simply a book about resources and logistics, this study poses fundamental questions of identity construction, showing how culture and reality influence each other. Through an exploration of Parliament’s interaction with local communities and individuals, it reveals fascinating intersections between military necessity and issues of gender, patriarchy, religion, bureaucracy, nationalism and allegiance.

Book The Sermons of Charles Wesley

Download or read book The Sermons of Charles Wesley written by Charles Wesley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) is widely recognized as one of the greatest writers of the English hymn. The importance of Charles, however, extends well beyond his undoubted poetic abilities, for he is a figure of central importance in the context of the birth and early growth of Methodism, amovement which today has a worldwide presence. It was Charles and not John who first started the Oxford 'Holy Club' from which the ethos and structures of organised Methodism were eventually to emerge. It was Charles rather than John who first experienced the 'strange warming of the heart' thatcharacterised the experience of many eighteenth-century evangelicals; and in the early years it was Charles no less than John who sought to spread, mainly through his preaching, the evangelical message across England, Wales, and Ireland. Eye witness testimony suggests that Charles was a powerfuland effective preacher whose homiletic work and skill did much to establish and further the early Methodist cause. In this book this other side of Charles Wesley is brought clearly into focus through the publication, for the first time, of all of the known Charles Wesley sermon texts. In the four substantial introductory chapters a case is made for the inclusion of the 23 sermons here presented and there isdiscussion also of the significant text-critical problems that have been negotiated in the production of this volume. Other chapters present a summary of Charles's life and preaching career and seek to show by example how the sermons, no less than the hymns, are significant vehicles for thetransmission of Charles's message. This book hence makes a plea for a reassessment of the place of Charles Wesley in English Church history and argues that he deserves to be recognised as more than just 'The Sweet Singer of Methodism'.

Download or read book The Last Eve written by Roland Greene and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I chose The Last Eve as the title of this book because early in the Bible study, we learn that sin first came into a perfect world by the first Eve. She was created to be a helper for the first man Adam, who was first created, put in a perfect garden, and given instructions to dress and keep it. Also, he was given for food all that grew in the garden except the fruit of one tree, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Eve, who was created after Adam and from a part of Adam, was told by Adam of the instructions given to him by the Creator; otherwise, she could not have known that fruit from that tree was forbidden. Her desire to elevate herself above that which the Creator had given her is precisely the desire of women today and the reason a once great country, the United States of America along with the rest of the world, has now become so divided. As the apostle said, we can be nothing and have nothing except it be given to use by the One who created us. Passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution giving women the right to vote gave her the opportunity she desired to again take that which is forbidden to her, to have authority over men (1 Timothy 2:12). The Congress of the United States is now nearly half women, who can be accurately described as the last Eve because like the first Eve, they have taken which is forbidden to them. They take part in making laws which have authority over men as well as women. At the judgment, those men who allow it will hear as the first Adam did because you have hearkened to the voice of your wife!
