Book Graphs and Tables of the Mathieu Functions and Their First Derivatives

Download or read book Graphs and Tables of the Mathieu Functions and Their First Derivatives written by James C. Wiltse and published by . This book was released on 2012-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathieu functions are employed in solving a variety of problems in mathematic (al?) physics. In many cases the configuration involves elliptical coordinates. Of course, the circular geometry is the degenerate case of the elliptical cross section. This volume contains values for, and curves of the angular and radial Mathieu functions and their first derivatives. The latter are often needed in the solution of problems, in particular in solving electromagnetic wave propagation problems. Also included are data on zero crossings of the radial Mathieu functions. These are often needed for determining the cut-off frequencies for propagating modes. Other tables are available for the Mathieu functions, but there is very little data available for derivatives or zero crossings. It is felt that the principal value of this volume is in the multitude of curves included. The analyst dealing with elliptical cases can, by inspection of the curves, find values of the functions and derivatives at the origin, maxima and minima, zero crossings, and qualitative behavior of the plots as a function of several parameters. To the author's knowledge, this is the most extensive presentation of plotted information. It is hoped that the information will be helpful in the solution of practical problems. This book is divided into two sections. Section I deals only with the functions themselves, defining the equations and terminology used and presenting the tabular data and curves. Section II treats the derivatives and the zeros. Again the terminology and equations for the first derivatives are given. The Mathieu functions are named after Emile L. Mathieu (1835-1890), a French mathematician, who in 1868 published an article dealing with vibratory movement of the elliptic membrane. The asteroid 27947 Emilemathieu is named in his honor.

Book High Speed Computing Devices

Download or read book High Speed Computing Devices written by Engineering Research Associates and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the definitive modern sourcebook on the technologies from which the computer industry sprang. Widely read, it gave impetus to technical developments both in the United States and abroad. It presents a clear, organized picture of computing concepts, techniques, machinery, and components in use as of 1950, with emphasis on electronic high-speed computing. The material is elaborately referenced and contains a multitude of diagrams and tables. One particularly significant table lists all the computers of the era-including the famous EDVAC, UNIVAC, BINAC, and Mark III-with their specifications. This first compendium of United States computer technology was created by a research team that grew out of the U.S. Navy's wartime cryptologic establishment. High-Speed Computing Devices is Volume IV in the Charles Babbage Institute Reprint Series and was originally published in 1950 by McGraw-Hill.

Book When Computers Were Human

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Alan Grier
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2013-11-01
  • ISBN : 1400849365
  • Pages : 423 pages

Download or read book When Computers Were Human written by David Alan Grier and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Palm Pilots and iPods, PCs and laptops, the term "computer" referred to the people who did scientific calculations by hand. These workers were neither calculating geniuses nor idiot savants but knowledgeable people who, in other circumstances, might have become scientists in their own right. When Computers Were Human represents the first in-depth account of this little-known, 200-year epoch in the history of science and technology. Beginning with the story of his own grandmother, who was trained as a human computer, David Alan Grier provides a poignant introduction to the wider world of women and men who did the hard computational labor of science. His grandmother's casual remark, "I wish I'd used my calculus," hinted at a career deferred and an education forgotten, a secret life unappreciated; like many highly educated women of her generation, she studied to become a human computer because nothing else would offer her a place in the scientific world. The book begins with the return of Halley's comet in 1758 and the effort of three French astronomers to compute its orbit. It ends four cycles later, with a UNIVAC electronic computer projecting the 1986 orbit. In between, Grier tells us about the surveyors of the French Revolution, describes the calculating machines of Charles Babbage, and guides the reader through the Great Depression to marvel at the giant computing room of the Works Progress Administration. When Computers Were Human is the sad but lyrical story of workers who gladly did the hard labor of research calculation in the hope that they might be part of the scientific community. In the end, they were rewarded by a new electronic machine that took the place and the name of those who were, once, the computers.

Book Pioneering Women in American Mathematics

Download or read book Pioneering Women in American Mathematics written by Judy Green and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the result of a study in which the authors identified all of the American women who earned PhD's in mathematics before 1940, and collected extensive biographical and bibliographical information about each of them. By reconstructing as complete a picture as possible of this group of women, Green and LaDuke reveal insights into the larger scientific and cultural communities in which they lived and worked." "The book contains an extended introductory essay, as well as biographical entries for each of the 228 women in the study. The authors examine family backgrounds, education, careers, and other professional activities. They show that there were many more women earning PhD's in mathematics before 1940 than is commonly thought." "The material will be of interest to researchers, teachers, and students in mathematics, history of mathematics, history of science, women's studies, and sociology."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West written by Alison I. Beach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monasticism, in all of its variations, was a feature of almost every landscape in the medieval West. So ubiquitous were religious women and men throughout the Middle Ages that all medievalists encounter monasticism in their intellectual worlds. While there is enormous interest in medieval monasticism among Anglophone scholars, language is often a barrier to accessing some of the most important and groundbreaking research emerging from Europe. The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West offers a comprehensive treatment of medieval monasticism, from Late Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. The essays, specially commissioned for this volume and written by an international team of scholars, with contributors from Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, cover a range of topics and themes and represent the most up-to-date discoveries on this topic.

Book excerpt: The memoirs of Hortense (1646–1699) and of Marie (1639–1715) Mancini, nieces of the powerful Cardinal Mazarin and members of the court of Louis XIV, represent the earliest examples in France of memoirs published by women under their own names during their lifetimes. Both unhappily married—Marie had also fled the aftermath of her failed affair with the king—the sisters chose to leave their husbands for life on the road, a life quite rare for women of their day. Through their writings, the Mancinis sought to rehabilitate their reputations and reclaim the right to define their public images themselves, rather than leave the stories of their lives to the intrigues of the court—and to their disgruntled ex-husbands. First translated in 1676 and 1678 and credited largely to male redactors, the two memoirs reemerge here in an accessible English translation that chronicles the beginnings of women’s rights to personal independence within the confines of an otherwise circumscribed early modern aristocratic society.

Download or read book Solvay written by Kenneth Bertrams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Solvay, philanthropist and organizer of the world-famous Solvay conferences on physics, discovered a profitable way of making soda ash in 1861. Together with a handful of associates, he laid the foundations of the Solvay company, which successfully branched out into other chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Since its emergence in 1863, Solvay has maintained world leadership in the production of soda ash. This is the first scholarly book on the history of the Solvay company, which was one of the earliest chemical multinationals and today is among the world's twenty largest chemical companies. It is also one of the largest companies in the field to preserve its family character. The authors analyze the company's 150-year history (1863–2013) from economic, political and social perspectives, showing the enormous impact geopolitical events had on the company and the recent consequences of global competition.
