Book System Modeling and Control Design of a Two stage Metering Poppet valve System

Download or read book System Modeling and Control Design of a Two stage Metering Poppet valve System written by Yamin Luo and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this work is to develop mathematical models, stability criteria, and control designs for a two-stage poppet valve system with a simple back-side pipeline condition that may be used in a valve stack to create an independent metering function for a hydraulic circuit. First, this system is modeled as a nonlinear open-loop model as well as a linear one. The completely linear form of the flow force acting on the poppet head is derived from simplified Navier-Stokes Equations. Second, four control methods that comprise modified PI control, LQG control, H [mobius] control, and nonlinear feedback control are used to make a closed-loop poppet system. The nonlinear controller is only applied to the nonlinear system and certified by Lyapunov theorem to be globally asymptotically stable. The basic guidelines for selecting control gains are derived by Routh-Hurwitz method. Finally, important system parameters, especially the transient flow force and two leakages, are discussed to reveal their effects on the open-loop system stability. Simulations results illustrate that the closed-loop poppet system with either the modified PI controller or the nonlinear controller can track the desired poppet displacement represented by a sine wave with 10 HZ frequency. The LQG controller and the H [mobius] controller having fixed weighting functions or matrices are not flexible enough to satisfythe global nonlinear systems, though they exhibit the acceptable regulation behavior.

Book Modeling Design and Control of Forced feedback Metering Poppet Valve System

Download or read book Modeling Design and Control of Forced feedback Metering Poppet Valve System written by Matthew Muller and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explores valve design, dynamic modeling, and techniques to achieve flow control for a forced-feedback metering poppet valve system. In particular, nonlinear and linear models of a forced feedback configuration are developed and tuned through the use of root locus techniques. Typical steady state conditions as well as extreme high and low pressure drops are simulated in attempts to uncover instabilities and other possible undesirable performance characteristics of the valve. It is shown that by using a variable inlet orifice to the control volume as opposed to a constant orifice, desired system bandwidth and stability can be achieved. Open loop valve designs are then simulated with several electronic control schemes which incorporate feedback of load pressure and in some cases valve flow. An observer design is investigated as a means of providing flow feedback without additional sensor costs. Electronic flow control schemes are compared to standard mechanical pressure compensation and finally a robust analysis is provided for a chosen electronic control scheme.

Book Nonlinear Control and Active Damping of a Forced feedback Metering Poppet Valve

Download or read book Nonlinear Control and Active Damping of a Forced feedback Metering Poppet Valve written by Curtis Harvey Omari Cline and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a metering poppet valve which was developed at the University of Missouri (MU valve), the valve can be configured for performance at the cost of stability. It is desirable to achieve both performance and stability using electronic control. Presently, in the MU valve, the pilot poppet motion is damped by the flow of hydraulic fluid through a channel or orifice running through the poppet. In this research, it is proposed that the solenoid be used to provide damping (active damping) to the pilot poppet. The damping input signal to the solenoid is determined as a function of the pilot poppet velocity. In practice, the velocity is difficult to measure due to the MU valve's configuration and it is estimated according to the self-sensing actuator concept. Theoretical results demonstrated that a valve actuator could be designed with an emphasis on high speed performance while an electronic control system is used to damp unwanted oscillations. For flow control, several researchers have used feedback linearization to cancel part of a hydraulic system's nonlinearities in spool valves. In the case of the metering poppet valve, feedback linearization is an attractive approach since experimental studies have shown that poppet instabilities are caused by nonlinear mechanisms like flow forces. In this work, nonlinearities are cancelled in the input-output relationship of the metering poppet valve. The controller was shown to achieve robust tracking of a reference trajectory.

Book Robust Control Design for a Proportional Valve with Backlash Compensation

Download or read book Robust Control Design for a Proportional Valve with Backlash Compensation written by Nader Moustafa and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, a linear technique is used to study the stability of a nonlinear system. Most of dynamic systems in industrial and fluid power systems are nonlinear and include uncertainties. Thus, unexpected changes in the stability can be exhibited and can lead these systems to become unstable exhibit oscillatory behavior. Engineers have been trying to develop nonlinear mathematical models to be able to predict whether or not a designed system will be exposed to such an oscillation before considering building and implementing the system. The focus of this study is to predict the existence of nonlinear oscillation in a dynamic system. A nonlinear model validation of a solenoid operated proportional control valve was performed using open loop testes. The model consists of linear and nonlinear parts. The linear part was developed by linearizing the nonlinear equations governing the operations of the valve at nominal conditions. The nonlinear parts constructed by analyzing open loop tests showed that two major nonlinearities found in the system; saturation effect of the current input and backlash hysteresis behavior of the valve; were considered to be the cause of instability. Each one of these nonlinearities was represented by its linear model and several limit cycles were predicted using the describing function analysis method. In order to control limit cycle behavior, a control system was designed in order to ensure robust stability and performance. Two aspects of the valve system were considered in the design. First, the uncertainty model of the valve operation due to the uncertainty found for the 30 replications of the first stage spool valve was considered. Second, the nonlinearities embedded in the system were considered which can cause stability issues if they have not been considered in the design. Thus, two different controllers were designed and implemented for the system, anti-backlash and H-infinity controllers. Designing both of the controllers in a way that robust stability and performance are to be achieved proved to be the main challenge. A technique was developed to extract the best stability and performance characteristics for each type of controller. Finally, the control system was tested experimentally for all the replications of the valve system. Results showed a significant amount of hysteresis reduction as well as robust stability and performance objectives were me by all the system uncertain replications using the designed controllers.
