Book Synthesis and Luminescent Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals

Download or read book Synthesis and Luminescent Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals written by Antonio Coyopol-Solis and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, study of silicon-based visible light-emitting devices has increased due to large-scale microelectronic integration. Since then different physical and chemical processes have been performed to convert bulk silicon (Si) into a light-emitting material. From discovery of Photoluminescence (PL) in porous Silicon by Canham, a new field of research was opened in optical properties of the Si nanocrystals (Si-NCs) embedded in a dielectric matrix, such as SRO (silicon-rich oxide) and SRN (silicon-rich nitride). In this respect, SRO films obtained by sputtering technique have proved to be an option for light-emitting capacitors (LECs). For the synthesis of SRO films, growth parameters should be considered; Si-excess, growth temperature and annealing temperature. Such parameters affect generation of radiative defects, distribution of Si-NCs and luminescent properties. In this chapter, we report synthesis, structural and luminescent properties of SRO monolayers and SRO/SiO2 multilayers (MLs) obtained by sputtering technique modifying Si-excess, thickness and thermal treatments.

The authors give special attention to the photoluminescence of silicon nanoparticles. The third part describes methods used for studying and controlling the structure and properties of nanocrystalline silicon. These methods include standard ones, such as electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and diffraction, as well as novel techniques, such as femtosecond spectroscopy, ultrafast electron nanocrystallography, and dynamic transmission electron microscopy. The fourth part details some of the practical applications of nanocrystalline silicon, including the use of nanoparticles as additives–absorbers of UV radiation in sunscreens. Incorporating much of the authors’ own extensive research results, this book provides a systematic account of the scientific problems of nanosilicon and its potential practical applications. It will help readers understand current and emerging applications and research methods of this unique material.

Book Electronic and Optical Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals

Download or read book Electronic and Optical Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals written by Fabio Trani and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even if the discovery of the photoluminescence of porous silicon dates to more than twenty years ago, the research on the optical properties of silicon is still a hot topic. The most recent experimental techniques have allowed the successful synthesis of silicon nanoparticles with narrow size distributions, and the realization of light-emitting silicon devices for technological and biomedical applications. From the theoretical point of view, the physics of silicon nanocrystals still deserves a huge interest. While the quantum confinement effect has been recognized as the main cause of the photoluminescence, many doubts remain on the way in which the phenomenon takes place in real nanocrystals. This book summarizes the result of a work lead by the author at the University of Naples. The density of states, the optical gap, the absorption spectra, the static dielectric constant, the recombination times, are all illustrated for several sets of silicon spheres and ellipsoids, upon changing their size and aspect ratio. The book also reviews previous research work, with special reference to the experimental and theoretical literature on silicon nanocrystals.

Book Device Applications of Silicon Nanocrystals and Nanostructures

Download or read book Device Applications of Silicon Nanocrystals and Nanostructures written by Nobuyoshi Koshida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in the technology of silicon nanocrystals and silicon nanostructures, where quantum-size effects are important, are systematically described including examples of device applications. Due to the strong quantum confinement effect, the material properties are freed from the usual indirect- or direct-bandgap regime, and the optical, electrical, thermal, and chemical properties of these nanocrystalline and nanostructured semiconductors are drastically changed from those of bulk silicon. In addition to efficient visible luminescence, various other useful material functions are induced in nanocrystalline silicon and periodic silicon nanostructures. Some novel devices and applications, in fields such as photonics (electroluminescence diode, microcavity, and waveguide), electronics (single-electron device, spin transistor, nonvolatile memory, and ballistic electron emitter), acoustics, and biology, have been developed by the use of these quantum-induced functions in ways different from the conventional scaling principle for ULSI.

Book Syntheses and Optical Properties of Silicon Based Nanomaterials

Download or read book Syntheses and Optical Properties of Silicon Based Nanomaterials written by Mita Dasog and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon (Si) based nanomaterials have the potential to revolutionize the microelectronics industry by introducing desirable nanoscale properties into electronic components without compromising the material composition. They have also been proposed as a greener alternative for many Group III-V and II-VI semiconductors. However, the high temperature and costly infrastructure required for the large scale synthesis and characterization of Si based materials still poses a challenge that impedes their widespread application. This thesis describes the synthesis of silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC), silicon nitride (Si3N4), and silica (SiO2) nano- and micromaterials from compositionally tuned sol-gel polymers. Si based materials were prepared either via disproportionation of (RSiO1.5)n sol-gel polymers or by a magnesiothermic reduction method. Magnesiothermic reduction was carried out at the lowest temperature reported in the literature to date (500 - 600 oC) to make Si, Si3N4, and SiC materials with various morphologies. Detailed chemical investigations were carried out to understand the origin of blue luminescence in Si nanocrystals (NCs). It was determined that the presence of nitrogen, oxygen, and chlorine based impurities in trace amounts can lead to blue emission via a charge transfer process. Si-NCs with various surface protecting groups were synthesized in order to tune their luminescence across the visible spectrum. The luminescence is believed to originate from surface defects, and the excited state lifetimes of such emissions are short lived (a few nanoseconds). This is the first example to demonstrate emission across the visible spectrum by tuning the surface protecting groups. The materials and methodologies summarized in this thesis open up new avenues in the pursuit of Si nanomaterial based photovoltaics, sensors, biological applications, redox reactions, greenhouse gas sequestration, and many more.

Book Luminescent Silicon Nanostructures

Download or read book Luminescent Silicon Nanostructures written by and published by ISSN. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon is the most important semiconducting material of the microelectronic industry. Bulk silicon does not exhibit good optical properties, however in the late 1980s good emission was observed and studied in a silicon-based material, porous silicon. Since then, a variety of luminescent silicon nanostructures have been investigated, but different results and interpretations have been reported in the literature regarding the origin of the luminescence of these structures. This Faraday Discussion explores new methodologies to synthesize and characterise luminescent silicon nanostructures, from porous silicon to nanocrystals and nanorods. Attention is devoted to the most promising applications of these systems in the fields of bioimaging, sensing and energy conversion (e.g., OLED and luminescent solar concentrators). Wet, dry, chemical, physical, thermal, out-of-equilibrium formation paths are related to the physics of the produced nanostructures and to the role of the matrix (interface) in which they are embedded. In this volume the topics covered include: Synthesis and functionalisation of silicon nanostructures Optical and electronic properties: from theory to experiments Silicon nanostructures for sensing and bioimaging Silicon nanostructures for energy conversion devices
