Book Tasting Difference

Download or read book Tasting Difference written by Gitanjali G. Shahani and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tasting Difference examines early modern discourses of racial, cultural, and religious difference that emerged in the wake of contact with foreign peoples and foreign foods from across the globe. Gitanjali Shahani reimagines the contact zone between Western Europe and the global South in culinary terms, emphasizing the gut rather than the gaze in colonial encounters. From household manuals that instructed English housewives how to use newly imported foodstuffs to "the spicèd Indian air" of A Midsummer Night's Dream, from the repurposing of Othello as an early modern pitchman for coffee in ballads to the performance of disgust in travel narratives, Shahani shows how early modern genres negotiated the allure and danger of foreign tastes. Turning maxims such as "We are what we eat" on their head, Shahani asks how did we (the colonized subjects) become what you (the colonizing subjects) eat? How did we become alternately the object of fear and appetite, loathing and craving? Shahani takes us back several centuries to the process by which food came to be inscribed with racial character and the racial other came to be marked as edible, showing how the racializing of food began in an era well before chicken tikka masala and Balti cuisine. Bringing into conversation critical paradigms in early modern studies, food studies, and postcolonial studies, she argues that it is in the writing on food and eating that we see among the earliest configurations of racial difference, and it is experienced both as a different taste and as a taste of difference.

Book excerpt: A map into the past. A long-lost young woman. And a thirty-year family mystery. The Hunter Valley, 1880. Evie Ludgrove loves to chart the landscape around her home—hardly surprising since she grew up in the shadow of her father’s obsession with the great Australian explorer Dr. Ludwig Leichhardt. So when an advertisement appears in The Bulletin magazine offering a thousand-pound reward for proof of where Leichhardt met his fate, Evie is determined to use her father’s papers to unravel the secret. But when Evie sets out to prove her theory, she vanishes without a trace, leaving behind a mystery that haunts her family for thirty years. Letitia Rawlings arrives at the family estate in her Ford Model T to inform her great-aunt Olivia of a loss in their family. But Letitia is also escaping her own problems—her brother’s sudden death, her mother’s scheming, and her dissatisfaction with the life planned out for her. So when Letitia discovers a beautifully illustrated map that might hold a clue to the fate of her missing aunt, Evie Ludgrove, she sets out to discover the truth. But all is not as it seems, and Letitia begins to realize that solving the mystery of her family’s past could offer as much peril as redemption. A gripping historical mystery for fans of Kate Morton and Natasha Lester’s The Paris Seamstress, The Cartographer’s Secret follows a young woman’s quest to heal a family rift as she becomes entangled in one of Australia’s greatest historical puzzles. “A galvanizing, immersive adventure . . . forcing the characters to reckon with the choice found at the crux of passion and loyalty and the power of shared blood that can either destroy or heal.” —Joy Callaway, international bestselling author of The Fifth Avenue Artists Society Daphne du Maurier Award Winner, 2021 Historical story with both romance and mystery Full-length, stand-alone novel (c. 104,000 words) Includes discussion questions for book clubs

Download or read book The Indigo Scarf written by P J Piccirillo and published by Brown Posey Press. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indigo Scarf chronicles the crossing lives of escaped slaves Jedediah James and George Sharpe as they flee with their white wives into the wilderness of Pennsylvania's Sinnemahone country, on the upper reaches of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, during the frontier decades after Pennsylvania's last Indian purchase. The novel opens, however, in 1882 in Washington's Baltimore and Potomac Railroad station. Narrator Anna Maria Sharpe is departing for the backwoods of north-central Pennsylvania, which she fled in her teens doubtful of her identity. She encounters Benjamin James, now a drifting, alcoholic longshoreman, who'd been implicated in the murder of his brother during Anna Maria's childhood. Benjamin decides to join her on the journey. Along the way, we follow the tale of the founders of their sordid hideaway settlement: his father, the infamous ex-slave Jedediah James; George Sharpe, a former indentured grist-miller whom Anna Maria believes was her grandfather; and the white women they had escaped with to the wild Sinnemahone country, Sarah James and Rosanna Sharpe. Through the story, Anna Maria learns that the man Benjamin had been accused of murdering had been her father, and the murderer, her half-brother. Benjamin's account of the life of Jedediah James reveals a fatal obsession with ownership driving this freed slave toward his reckoning. Hostilities build to a head between James and his wife's father-the august revolutionary war veteran Samson Starret-as well as Sarah's ex-suitor, Williamsport's Thomas Tillman, a man fixated on this woman whom an ex-slave stole from him on the eve of their arranged marriage. The scenes of The Indigo Scarf take the reader from a plantation in Virginia's tidewater region to the tragic end of a whiskey and timber-pirating operation on the Susquehanna's un-peopled and feral West Branch during the frontier decades after Pennsylvania's last Indian purchase.

Book Trade Makes States

Download or read book Trade Makes States written by Tobias Hagmann and published by Hurst Publishers. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade Makes States highlights how trade and the circulation of goods are central to Somali societies, economies and politics. Drawing on multi-site research from across East Africa’s Somali-inhabited economic space–which includes areas of Kenya, Djibouti, Uganda and Ethiopia–this volume highlights the interconnection between trade and state-building after state collapse. It scrutinises the ‘politics of circulation’ between competing public administrations, which seek to generate revenue and to control infrastructures along major trade corridors. Connecting classic debates on state formation with recent scholarship on logistics and cross-border trading, Trade Makes States argues that the facilitation and capture of commodity flows have been instrumental in making and unmaking states across the Somali territories. Aspiring state-builders are thus confronted with the challenge of governing the flow of goods in order to rule over lands and peoples. The contributors to this volume draw attention to the ingenuities of transnational Somali markets, which often appear to be self-governed. Their dynamism and everyday administration by a host of actors provide important insights into contemporary state formation on the margins of global supply-chain capitalism.
