Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unfortunately, no one rootstock can satisfy all the requirements for consistently producing copious amounts of large, firm fruit of premium quality. Growers are strongly advised to consider carefully the effects of each specific rootstock/scion combination as a function of environmental and cultural practices when replanting an orchard (Tables 1 and 2). Selecting the proper rootstock depends not only on the management skills of the grower but also on the scion cultivar, training system and site selected for the orchard. Furthermore, it is often possible for semi-dwarfing cherry rootstocks to be highly productive. However, when these rootstocks are combined with productive scion cultivars, it can lead to an over-cropping situation. In addition, productive scion/rootstock combinations are only recommended for fertile soils. For more information about the attributes of specific cultivars, please see PNW 604, "Sweet Cherry Cultivars for the Fresh Market." Semi-dwarfing rootstocks do, however, have major economic advantages. A recent study conducted among several Oregon growers (Seavert and Long, 2007) found that growers could recover their entire cost of establishment in eight years with a high-density orchard on productive rootstocks, compared to fifteen years for a standard-density orchard on 'Mazzard' rootstock. The development of these new semi-dwarfing, precocious rootstocks has been almost as significant to the sweet cherry industry as to the apple industry several decades ago. When compared to 'Mazzard', 'Colt' and even 'Mahaleb', size-controlling rootstocks have allowed sweet cherry growers an opportunity to plant high-density, pedestrian orchards that afford high early yields, easier management and a safer and more productive working environment."--Summary.

The high establishment costs and risk for perennial tree crops like cherries require producers to conduct careful analysis prior to investing. Farmers must not only look to prices today but to the long term price trends that are likely affect the investment profitability. This thesis is an investment analysis on planting twenty-five acres of Sweetheart cherries in Washington State. The purpose is to calculate the total net present value over the commercially productive life of the cherry trees. Prices received by growers for sweet cherry production can fluctuate. Sweet cherries are also susceptible to yield volatility. Therefore, a sensitivity analysis was calculated that shows the changes in price and yield and its effect on net present value. Sweet cherry production for fresh market is also labor intensive. Changes in labor supply and minimum wage can affect a farmers profit margins. This thesis evaluates the risk of a wage shock to the total net present value of the investment. The net present value calculated was found to be positive, making planting Sweetheart cherries a viable option for Hillslide Orchards. The internal rate of return was favorable at 12.30% return. Yield risk was relatively low in this model showing positive net present values at 60% over base yield and still positive at 40% below base yields. The price risk was found to be slightly higher with negative net present values below $1.00 or 20% below the base price. It is important to note that this model represents planting a block of Sweetheart cherries within an existing operation. There are additional costs that would be incurred for other farm operations, not modeled here that could decrease the overall profitability under alternative planting scenarios.

Due to broad latitudinal and elevation differences, Oregon has an exceptionally diverse climate, which exerts a major influence on soil formation. The mean annual temperature in Oregon ranges from 0°C in the Wallowa and Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon to 13 °C in south-central Oregon. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 175 mm in southeastern Oregon to over 5,000 mm at higher elevations in the Coast Range. The dominant vegetation type in Oregon is temperate shrublands, followed by forests dominated by lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, and mixed conifers, grasslands, subalpine forests, maritime Sitka spruce-western hemlock forests, and ponderosa pine-dominated forests. Oregon is divided into 17 Major Land Resource Areas, the largest of which include the Malheur High Plateau, the Cascade Mountains, the Blue Mountain Foothills, and Blue Mountains. The single most important geologic event in Oregon was the deposition of Mazama ash 7,700 years by the explosion of Mt. Mazama. Oregon has soil series representative of 10 orders, 40 suborders, 114 great groups, 389 subgroups, over 1,000 families, and over 1,700 soil series. Mollisols are the dominant order in Oregon, followed by Aridisols, Inceptisols, Andisols, Ultisols, and Alfisols. Soils in Oregon are used primarily for forest products, livestock grazing, agricultural crops, and wildlife management. Key land use issues in Oregon are climate change; wetland loss; flooding; landslides; volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis; coastal erosion; and wildfires.
