Book The Sociology of Science in Europe

Download or read book The Sociology of Science in Europe written by Robert King Merton and published by Carbondale : Southern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important new field, the social studies of science as an institutionalized research specialty now claims the attention of scholars both in the United States and Europe, as this important contribution shows. The sociology of science is expanding rapidly to all social science as policy makers see its potential for resolving problems dealing with the social aspects of science. Its further importance is shown in this collection of detailed national reviews of research in the specialty from all European countries with a history of significant research in the field. The countries reported on are West Germany, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France, Italy, Great Britain, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The contributors are all well-established scholars. In addition to reporting on the state of the discipline, the contributors have compiled comprehensive bibliographical source materials, which have increased rapidly in the last decade and hence may not be familiar to many researchers in other countries. In the first part of this volume, the founding father" of the sociology of science, Robert K. Merton, gives the history of the specialty. Not uncharacteristically, he raises questions on every page, the implications of which will provide abundant research projects and dissertation topics for researchers and their students.

This perspective allows going beyond the simplistic understandings of biotechnology policy currently prevailing. This volume provides a rigorous analysis and detailed information on biotechnology policy in nine countries. The essays included here present the results of in-depth empirical research in the area of biomedicine and agro-food biotechnology. The book is, therefore, not only of interest to policy-makers and policy analysts, but also to anyone with an interest in biotechnology.

Book Sweden Norway at the Berlin Conference 1884 85 History National Identity Making and Sweden s Relations with Africa

Download or read book Sweden Norway at the Berlin Conference 1884 85 History National Identity Making and Sweden s Relations with Africa written by David Nilsson and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The image of Sweden is one of a small, democratic and peace-loving country without the moral burden of a colonial past. However, in this Current African Issues publication, the notion that Sweden lacks a colonial past in Africa is brought into question. At the Berlin Conference 1884-85, the rules for colonisation of Africa were agreed upon among a handful of white men. With the blessing of King Oscar II, the united kingdoms of Sweden-Norway participated in the Berlin conference, ratified the resulting convention and signed a trade agreement with King Leopold's International Congo Association. Thereafter, hundreds of Swedish militaries, seamen and missionaries took an active part in the brutal colonial project in the Congo. What was Sweden-Norway really doing at the Berlin Conference and in the ensuing Scramble for Africa ? Is it now time to re-assess Swedish identity in relation to Africa, an identity so far centered on colonial innocence ? Dr DAVID NILSSON is a researcher at the Division of History of Science, Technology and Environment, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. His research focuses on global long term perspectives on sustainable development in Africa." -- Abstract.
