Book Nutrition Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change in Africa

Download or read book Nutrition Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change in Africa written by Gbadebo Odularu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-19 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sub-Saharan Africa, the rapidly evolving COVID-19, increasing population growth, and exponential expansion in demand for agricultural commodities are putting pressure on available resources, thereby posing immense challenges to the region’s capacity to achieve nutritional security related to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although Sub-Saharan Africa boasts vast, fertile and uncultivated arable lands, its capacity to contribute to feeding its current and future population is being seriously undermined by factors such as poor adoption and utilization of innovations and digital tools, climate change impact, environmental degradation, weak political will, limited interest in farming, lack of government support, and more. In spite of these constraints, sustainable agriculture, food security and nutrition security in Sub-Saharan Africa can be achieved by adopting a multi-pronged approach, which includes improved agricultural mechanization, adoption of high yielding crop varieties, use of information technology, public investments in improved technologies, and rural infrastructure funding. This edited volume provides innovative policy tools for enhancing Sub-Saharan Africa's capacity to achieve sustainable agriculture, food security and nutrition security in the digital age and in the face of climate variability. Furthermore, this book presents smart strategies for increased agricultural production, reduced food waste, and enhanced nutritional outcomes by harnessing the latest discoveries in agricultural research, education and advisory services.

Book Towards Sustainable Food Production in Africa

Download or read book Towards Sustainable Food Production in Africa written by Morris Fanadzo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book is focused on Sustainable Development Goal 2. It offers a comprehensive and topical collection of practices, technologies and innovations in the field of sustainable food production and security under a changing climate. It is a one-stop handbook for farmers, researchers, extensionists, policy makers and other stakeholders seeking to identify and disseminate best fit technologies for local and regional landscapes. It offers an understanding of the challenges, risks and uncertainties as well as opportunities to foster productive and sustainable food production. Smallholder farming and agriculture in general is facing a serious threat from climate change that has resulted in erratic and unpredictable rainfall and increased temperatures, among other abiotic stresses. These climate change induced pressures have reduced productivity mainly among the smallholder farmers, who are critical in driving the attainment of sustainable development goals like SDG 2, 12 and 13. The objective of the book is to document effective and practicable practices and technologies that can be adopted by smallholder African farmers as mitigation measures against the effects of climate change. This book is of interest to researchers, agricultural scientists, climate change scientists, capacity builders and policymakers.

Book Transforming Agriculture in Southern Africa

Download or read book Transforming Agriculture in Southern Africa written by Richard A. Sikora and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a synthesis of the key issues and challenges facing agriculture and food production in Southern Africa. Southern Africa is facing numerous challenges from diverse issues such as agricultural transformations, growing populations, urbanization and climate change. These challenges place great pressure on food security, agriculture, water availability and other natural resources, as well as impacting biodiversity. Drawing on case studies from Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the chapters in this book consider these challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering key areas in constraints to production, the most important building blocks of good farming practices, and established and emerging technologies. This book will be a valuable support for informing new policies and processes aimed at improving food production and security and developing sustainable agriculture in Southern Africa. This informative volume will be key reading for those interested in agricultural science, African studies, rural studies, development studies and sustainability. It will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and agricultural practitioners. Book Studies of Sustainable Agriculture and Animal Science in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Studies of Sustainable Agriculture and Animal Science in Sub Saharan Africa written by Uche C. Amalu and published by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2004 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African scholars discuss various aspects of the development of sustainable agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa like constraints of food production, fragile and vulnerable ecosystems, soil fertility, land tenure system, crop protection and woman's role as well as policy and management, socio-economic and cultural aspects, ecological features, soil productivity and land availability, freshwater access and irrigation, plant nutrient supply, genetic resources and bio-diversity. In the second part living conditions of animals in sub-Saharan Africa are investigated. Due to the fact of numerous animal diseases and a limited access to international markets, the improvement of the health of domestic animals and nomadic pastoralism is discussed. Topics are lifestyle and hazards of nomadic pastoralism and measures for improvement, constraints to domestic animals and milk production, environmental factors, animal rights and government regulations, animal marketing and slaughtering.

Book Food Security and Agricultural Development in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Food Security and Agricultural Development in Sub Saharan Africa written by Weldeghaber Kidane and published by Fao. This book was released on 2006 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication contains the main report of a study championing the case for increased public support to agricultural and food security in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It advances four main reasons why agriculture in SSA deserves more public support. The first is a moral imperative: SSA governments cannot and should not ignore a sector on which about 70 percent of their population directly depend for their livelihoods if they are serious about their commitment to MDG1. Second, in spite of its generally poor performance, SSA countries do not have any realistic strategic option that they can rely upon for achieving sustainable economic development other than agriculture. Third, there is evidence from a number of SSA countries that appropriate policies and direct public sector investment have combined to trigger agriculture sector-led economic growth. This publication argues for countries to build on their success stories and for others to explore such opportunities, taking into account their specific environmental, economic and social conditions. Fourth, on average, agriculture in SSA has generally performed better than most other sectors, except in countries endowed with mineral resources."--Publisher's description.

Book Assessing opportunities and constraints for biofuel development in sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Assessing opportunities and constraints for biofuel development in sub Saharan Africa written by Graham von Maltitz and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable biofuel production should provide opportunities for sub-Saharan African countries and their inhabitants, especially in impoverished rural areas. Biofuel feedstock production has the potential to bring job opportunities and earnings, but this should not be at the cost of existing livelihoods and the local environment. Biofuels also have the potential to increase energy security in these countries for both transportation and household needs. Sub-Saharan African biofuel feedstock production projects can be classified into 4 distinct models based on production scales (small- versus large-scale farm/plantations) and on the intended use of the biofuel (local versus national). The first type embraces large corporate plantations to supply the market for liquid transport fuel blends. The second type comprises small-scale producers linked to the corporate producers. The third type involves small-scale producers supplying the local energy needs of farmers and villages. The fourth and rarest type is linked to the large corporate plantations, to meet the corporation’s own energy needs. The introduction of foreign-owned, large-scale corporate plantations producing biofuel for transport fuel blends causes the most concern in sub-Saharan Africa, as their scale and ownership arrangements may disrupt rural livelihoods and affect access rights to land resources. However, these projects can also bring job opportunities, thereby providing alternative sources of income for poor communities. This working paper assesses mechanisms for limiting the negative impacts while maximising national benefit capture. Market-based mechanisms versus legal and policy mechanisms to enhance long-term sustainability are also discussed.
