Book Case Suspension and Binary Complement Structure in French

Download or read book Case Suspension and Binary Complement Structure in French written by Julia Herschensohn and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting the theoretical framework of the minimalist program, this study of syntactic limitations on complement configuration investigates the link between thematic external arguments and case. Using evidence from pronominal, psychological experiencer, and inalienable constructions, it argues that both accusative and dative are structural cases in French and that this duality is reflected in a parallel limit on argument projection. Larson's single complement hypothesis, which allows a maximum of two internal arguments, provides the theoretical justification for this proposal. The testing ground for the binary hypothesis is a group of nonthematic subject constructions involving undative as well as unaccusative verbs, linking, according to Burzio's generalization, case suspension and lack of an internal argument. The investigation of these constructions and those involving partitive case provides not only a theoretically significant contribution to our understanding of grammar, but also a motivated explanation for a number of empirical problems in French.

Book The Suspension of Seriousness

Download or read book The Suspension of Seriousness written by Carlos Alberto Sánchez and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Suspension of Seriousness engages the Mexican philosopher Jorge Portilla (1919–1963), taking note of Portilla's philosophical methodology, insights, and contributions to our understanding of value, being, and subjectivity. Portilla lived a short, troubled life and never held a teaching appointment, but his works, though few in number, were nevertheless philosophically penetrating. He is a legendary character in the Mexican popular imagination of the 1940s and '50s, but little has been written about him or his philosophy. His posthumously published Fenomenología del relajo is a phenomenological analysis of what Portilla calls "relajo" or the state we assume when we do not want to do what is seriously being asked of us—what is demanded of us. It is, Portilla says, "the suspension of seriousness." Carlos Alberto Sánchez uses Portilla's Fenomenología del relajo as a point of departure to consider the dangers both of our uncritical adherence to values as well as our urge to reject values altogether. He argues that Portilla provides a framework in which to situate the modern condition, ourselves, and our future. The first authorized English translation of Portilla's Fenomenología del relajo is included.

Book The Suspension of Reason in Hegel and Schelling

Download or read book The Suspension of Reason in Hegel and Schelling written by Christopher Lauer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rigorous historical analysis, Lauer challenges traditional readings that have reduced two of German idealism's most important thinkers to opposing caricatures: Hegel the uncompromising systematist blind to the novelty and contingency of human life and Schelling the protean thinker drawn to all manner of pseudoscientific charlatanry. Bringing together recent scholarship that is just beginning to realise Schelling's centrality in the overthrow of metaphysics and Hegel's openness to diversity and innovation, this book shows that both thinkers can be read as contributing to the Kantian project of showing both the utter necessity and the limitations of reason. In readings of texts spanning each thinker's career, Lauer shows that animating much of Hegel and Schellings' most passionate work is their recognition of the need neither for a canonization of reason nor for its overthrow, but for its 'suspension'. Their lifelong willingness to revisit both their definitions of reason and their accounts of its role in philosophy give these discussions a vitality and depth that few in the history of philosophy can match.

Book Paul Philosophy and the Theopolitical Vision

Download or read book Paul Philosophy and the Theopolitical Vision written by Douglas Harink and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-02-12 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apostle Paul was a man of many journeys. We are usually familiar with the geographical ones he made in his own time. This volume traces others--Paul's journeys in our time, as he is co-opted or invited to travel (sometimes as abused slave, sometimes as trusted guide) with modern and recent Continental philosophers and political theorists. Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Benjamin; Taubes, Badiou, Zizek, and Agamben--Paul journeys here among the philosophers. In these essays you are invited to travel with them into the regions of philosophy, hermeneutics, political theory, and theology. You will certainly hear the philosophers speak. But Paul will not remain silent. Above the sounds of the journey his voice comes through, loud and clear.

Book Willing Suspension of Disbelief

Download or read book Willing Suspension of Disbelief written by Anthony J. Ferri and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Willing Suspension of Disbelief: Poetic Faith in Film is a study of the way we watch film. Anthony Ferri explores the way expectations influence what they see, feel, and experience. Using Coleridge's term "willing suspension of disbelief" as a starting point, Ferri sets forth a fascinating study of the psychology of watching film. While film scholars and professionals have alluded to Coleridge's term in a parenthetical or tertiary manner, this volume makes a definitive account for the concept and provides a contemporary analysis of the film viewing process from a variety of critical and empirical perspectives.Willing Suspension of Disbelief is valuable for film scholars and students of film.
