Book excerpt: Get the three books of the A Place Called Home western romance series here in one volume! Far Hills Ranch has bound together the Susland family for nearly a century and a half. For just as long, there’s been a legend that the ranch and its family are cursed. Now, says the legend, the current generation is the last with a chance to break the curse. BOOK 1: LOST AND FOUND GROOM A stranger rescues her, then disappears when she needs him most. Until he knocks on her door, years later and half a world away... On assignment in distant Santa Estella, hardheaded journalist Kendra Jenner finds herself in the middle of a vicious hurricane . . . and unexpectedly in the arms of a stranger who speaks virtually no English. Fear leads to passion that months later leads to a baby, which Kendra fully expects to raise on her own, since her search for the father is a fruitless one. Three years later, "Paulo" shows up at her Wyoming home, identifying himself as Daniel Delligati. He says he's come for his son -- and for her. BOOK 2: AT THE HEART’S COMMAND The Army's sending him back to the western life he knew as a boy, the world of cowboys and cattle on Far Hills Ranch ... and back to the love he knew as a boy. But how can he even dream of second chances at love, when they should have no chance at all. Colonel John Griffin Jr. is the best kind of military man. He's a good and honorable soldier who's determined to protect Ellyn Sinclair at all costs – especially from himself. Once, he’d rejected a young Ellyn’s advances, because he could not give her the life she deserved. Instead, Grif stood up as best man when Ellyn married his best friend. He became a member of the family, a safe friend to her, the godfather of her children. But Ellyn is a widow now, back in Far Hills, Wyoming, living on his family's ranch there with her two young children, and struggling as a single parent to give her children what they need. No matter what it costs him, Grif will do his duty – help Ellyn and her children, while ignoring that he has never stopped wanting her. “A beautiful, emotional story that cuts right through the reader's heart.” -- Rendezvous "Grif is a hero of the most wonderful kind" - Road to Romance BOOK 3: HIDDEN IN A HEARTBEAT He's the kind of man she's been warned about, and she's about to find out why ... SARA Rising Star Award winner VRW HOLT Award finalist Rebecca Dahlgren comes west to Wyoming hoping for answers to her unknown heritage. But from the first moment, she finds Far Hills Ranch foreman Luke Chandler hard to miss. The sexy cowboy, with those sleepy eyes that aren't interested in sleeping, means just the sort of trouble her patrician grandmother has always warned her about. Luke has his own reasons for wanting to steer clear of anything like commitment. But the secrets behind Rebecca’s dark eyes keep luring him on … even if it means baring his own heart. Book Crime Justice and Retribution in the American West 1850 1900

Download or read book Crime Justice and Retribution in the American West 1850 1900 written by Jeremy Agnew and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western movies are full of images of swaggering outlaws brought to justice by valiant lawmen shooting them down in daring gunfights before riding off into the sunset. In reality it would not have happened that way. Real lawmen did not simply walk away from a gunfight--they had to face the legal system and justify shooting a civilian in the line of duty. Providing a more realistic view of criminal justice in the Old West, this history focuses on how criminals came into conflict with the law and how the law responded. The process is described in detail, from the common crimes of the day--such as train robbery and cattle theft--to the methods of apprehending criminals to their adjudication and punishment by incarceration, flogging or hanging.

Book Desert Retribution and Torture

Download or read book Desert Retribution and Torture written by Stephen Kershnar and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2001 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In general, there are two ways in which punishment is justified. Forward-looking justifications look to the good results that punishment brings about and that therefore occur after it. These results include the wrongdoer being deterred, incapacitated, or improved, as well as the deterrence of would-be wrongdoers, a decrease in costs associated with crime prevention, less fear in the community, and the promotion of hatred and disgust for actions that victimize others. In contrast, backward-looking justifications look to events that occurred before the punishment. On this approach, punishment is not justified via the good results that it brings about. The dominant backward-looking justification is retributivism. According to it, the wrongdoer in virtue of his past act deserves punishment and this desert justifies punishment. This book is an in-depth defense of retributivism. Since punitive desert lies at the heart of retributivism, it is important to provide an analysis of it. This is the focus of the first part of the book. I argue that punitive desert has to do with punishment being an intrinsically valuable event, where its value results from its standing in a certain relation to a person's having culpably performed a wrongdoing. I argue that this type of desert does not by itself contain moral duties to act in any way. In particular, it does not impose on someone the duty to punish a wrongdoer. This results in retributivism being more complex than the traditional accounts, since it must therefore involve duties that refer to but are not constituted by punitive desert. I also argue that punitive desert is independent of the wrongdoer's moral character and instead rests solely on a person's acts. Lastly, I argue that the value of punitive desert cannot be accounted for via more fundamental moral considerations. This results in punitive desert being a rather primitive moral notion in that it is not justified via more fundamental moral values. Like other intrinsically good things, e.g. friendship, and other intrinsically bad things, e.g. promise-breaking, punitive desert can be used to explain why certain states of affairs are both good and right.--Adapted from introduction.

Download or read book Pain and Retribution written by David Wilson and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the Tower of London is a tourist site, home only to the crown jewels, but not long ago the imposing structure held traitors, political prisoners, and more, often on their way to the chopping block. Even outside of this famous building, prisons have changed radically since the Norman Conquest in 1066. In the first book on the history of prisons in Britain, former prison governor and professor of criminology David Wilson offers unrivaled insight into the penal system in England, Scotland, and Wales, charting the rise and fall of forms of punishments that take place behind their walls. Pain and Retribution explores prisons as an institution and examines how they are designed, organized, and managed. Wilson reveals that prisons have to satisfy the demands of three interested parties: the public, from politicians and media commentators to everyday citizens; the prison staff; and the prisoners themselves. He shows how prevailing concerns and issues of the times allow one faction or another to have more power at varying points in history, and he considers how prisons are unable to satisfy all three at the same time—leading to the system being seen as a failure, despite rising numbers of prisoners and growing funds invested in keeping them incarcerated. With intriguing comparisons between the prisons of New York City and Britain and searching questions about the purposes of the current penal system, Pain and Retribution provides unparalleled access to prison landings, staffs, and the people behind the locked doors.

Download or read book Criminal Law written by Markus Dubber and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal Law: A Comparative Approach presents a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the substantive criminal law of two major jurisdictions: the United States and Germany. Presupposing no familiarity with either U.S. or German criminal law, the book will provide criminal law scholars and students with a rich comparative understanding of criminal law's foundations and central doctrines. All foreign-language sources have been translated into English; cases and materials are accompanied by heavily cross-referenced introductions and notes that place them within the framework of each country's criminal law system and highlight issues ripe for comparative analysis. Divided into three parts, the book covers foundational issues - such as constitutional limits on the criminal law - before tackling the major features of the general part of the criminal law and a selection of offences in the special part. Throughout, readers are exposed to alternative approaches to familiar problems in criminal law, and as a result will have a chance to see a given country's criminal law doctrine, on specific issues and in general, from the critical distance of comparative analysis.
