Book excerpt: An extraordinary modern novel in the Victorian tradition, Charles Palliser has created something extraordinary—a plot within a plot within a plot of family secrets, mysterious clues, low-born birth, high-reaching immorality, and, always, always the fog-enshrouded, enigmatic character of 19th century—London itself. “So compulsively absorbing that reality disappears . . . One is swept along by those enduring emotions that defy modern art and a random universe: hunger for revenge, longing for justice and the fantasy secretly entertained by most people that the bad will be punished and the good rewarded.”—The New York Times “A virtuoso achievement . . . It is an epic, a tour de force, a staggeringly complex and tantalizingly layered tale that will keep readers engrossed in days. . . . The Quincunx will not disappoint you. It is, quite simply, superb.”—Chicago Sun-Times “A bold and vivid tale that invites the reader to get lost in the intoxicating rhythms of another world. And the invitation is irresistible.”—San Francisco Chronicle “A remarkable book . . . In mood, color, atmosphere and characters, this is Charles Dickens reincarnated . . . It is an immersing experience.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review “To read the first pages is to be trapped for seven-hundred odd more: you cannot stop turning them.”—The New Yorker “Few books, at most a dozen or two in a lifetime, affect us this way. . . . For sheer intricacy and ingenuity, for skill and clarity of storytelling, it is the kind of book readers wait for, a book to get lost in.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer

What at first seems to be a horrible accident (and insurance nightmare for Magdalena!) could turn out to be a much more sinister event; and when another mishap occurs, Magdalena is certain there is a killer in her group – and it’s up to her to sniff out the culprit...before the world’s most incompetent town sheriff throws her in jail! Readers will delight in this laugh-out-loud cozy mystery debut – and relish the country cooking recipes included. PARSLEY, SAGE, ROSEMARY AND CRIME Magdalena Yoder, chaste and abstemious proprietor of the Pennsylvania Dutch Inn, agrees to let a Hollywood crew film at the inn – for an exorbitant price, of course. But when the assistant director is found pinned to a barn post with a farming tool, dimwitted local police chief, Marvin Stoltzfus fingers Magdalena as his prime suspect. Now it’s time for Magdalena to use her extraordinary Amish sleuthing skills to reveal the real killer – before another Hollywood hellion goes belly up and turns Magdalena’s charming PennDutch Inn into a grisly horror flick! NO USE DYING OVER SPILLED MILK Magdalena Yoder, Amish-Mennonite proprietor of the Pennsylvania Dutch Inn, travels to Farmersburg, Ohio for the funeral of her second cousin (twice removed) who had the unfortunate luck of drowning in a vat of milk...and, as Magdalena knows, Amish men just don’t go swimming in milk in the middle of February. Something’s definitely rotten in Farmersburg... When another relative is found belly up, Magdalena puts her (impressive, but attractive nonetheless, thank you very much) nose to the scent and discovers that a vicious cheese rivalry may be the cause of all this mayhem! In between keeping tabs on her saucy sister, Susannah, avoiding her sardine-loving host and spending time with her new boyfriend, Aaron Miller (a.k.a. Pooky Bear), Magdalena must find the killer...before more Yoders bite the dust!

Book Fiction in the Quantum Universe

Download or read book Fiction in the Quantum Universe written by Susan Strehle and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this outstanding book Susan Strehle argues that a new fiction has developed from the influence of modern physics. She calls this new fiction actualism, and within that framework she offers a critical analysis of major novels by Thomas Pynchon, Robert Coover, William Gaddis, John Barth, Margaret Atwood, and Donald Barthelme. According to Strehle, the actualists balance attention to questions of art with an engaged meditation on the external, actual world. While these actualist novels diverge markedly from realistic practice, Strehle claims that they do so in order to reflect more acutely what we now understand as real. Reality is no longer "realistic"; in the new physical or quantum universe, reality is discontinuous, energetic, relative, statistical, subjectively seen, and uncertainly known -- all terms taken from new physics. Actualist fiction is characterized by incompletions, indeterminacy, and "open" endings unsatisfying to the readerly wish for fulfilled promises and completed patterns. Gravity's Rainbow, for example, ends not with a period but with a dash. Strehle argues that such innovations in narrative reflect on twentieth-century history, politics, science, and discourse.
