Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been reduced opportunities for surgical skill acquisition due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the regulated training hours. Despite these challenges, self-regulated learning allows trainees to learn continuously, and motor skills development can be augmented through mental practice and motor imagery. The aim of this chapter is to introduce the theoretical concepts in skill acquisition and the role of mental and deliberate practice as an alternative for skill training. A case study is presented using a design and development framework for producing an online basic micro suturing training resource based on self-regulated learning. This case study demonstrates the use of the ADDIE instructional design model and Mayer,Äôs multimedia theory guidelines, for creating online instructional resources. The methodological approach of a design and developmental framework to create an educationally sound online training module for micro suturing which has significant utility in hand surgery is discussed in this chapter. The tools described in this chapter are translatable to any psychomotor skills development in medical education.

This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minimal Access Surgery (MAS) has multi-faceted implications on the different stakeholders involved in implementation. It requires the surgeon to cope with the ergonomic and cognitive challenges required to perform a surgical procedure. It needs the surgical team to work coherently for the smooth functioning of the technologically complex operating room (OR). It needs educators and policy makers to embrace reform into the novel practices of training skills in MAS. It needs the industry to engage in research to bring out newer tools and technologies akin to training tools. This thesis explores the premise of implementation of MAS in the areas of curriculum design, implementation of training protocols, assessment tools and emerging technologies and trends that improve the learning curve and the transfer of skills from a skills lab setting to the OR. Several surgeons were included from different parts of Europe and India with expertise levels ranging from novice to expert. To study the unique requirements of individual surgeons and the detriments of performance the Laparoscopic Surgical Skills (LSS) Grade 1 Level 1 was used as a common training curriculum. First, a worldwide survey was conducted on the variety of training modalities and tools. Then, Self-assessment and the implications of "reflection-before-practice" on skills progression was studied. Automated assessment tools were devised using motion tracking software and thresholds for optimal performance were proposed. Physiological markers were studied during OR performance to determine factors that influence immersion in virtual reality surroundings and replicated in physical space using 3D projection for team training. Evolving technology in MAS requires multifaceted approach from training to customization to ensure optimal and efficient patient and ergonomic outcomes.

For the simulation researcher, engineer and medical profession Fundamentals of Surgical Simulation poses some difficult questions that require urgent unambiguous and agreed answers.

Book Acquisition and Evaluation of Surgical Skills Using a Laparoscopic Physical Simulator

Download or read book Acquisition and Evaluation of Surgical Skills Using a Laparoscopic Physical Simulator written by Shannon Alexandra Fraser and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A physical surgical simulator, the McGill Inanimate System for Training and Evaluation of Laparoscopic Skills (MISTELS) is used to examine the acquisition of laparoscopic skills, as well as to determine a summative evaluation of these skills. The cumulative summation method (CUSUM) is used to characterize individual and group learning curves for a MISTELS task. To examine transfer of learning in laparoscopy, novice laparoscopists were randomized to either practice a basic psychomotor task (peg board transfer) or to a no-practice control group. After forty iterations, the novices performed a more complex task (suturing); those who practiced the basic task significantly improved their complex task performance. Finally, using the receiver operator curve (ROC), the summative evaluation score for MISTELS was determined by maximizing the sensitivity and specificity of this training instrument. Using these findings, individualized training programs can be developed to teach essential laparoscopic skills prior to entering the operating room." --
